This movie really keeps you on your toes as it unpeels layer upon layer of the intricately woven plot. Extremely complex and thought-provoking, but still easy to keep up with. At the end they almost leave you guessing whether everything is truly over, but it's pretty clear. Also... it's kind of long and I guarantee you won't want to get up in the middle of any part of it, so be ready for that!

The writing, directing and cast made this movie. The special effects were terrific, but they were not really the star of this show. The action scenes were also great, but there could have been less. This movie seemed to shine in the quiet moments.
DiCaprio was at his best. Gordon-Levitt and Page were great, but I really enjoyed the performances in the supporting roles by Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, and Marion Cotillard.
I was involved and engrossed the entire time and left wondering at the end. It doesn't get much better.

This movie was awesome. The acting was excellent, some of DiCaprio's best. Ellen Page was a welcome surprise also. But, the writing and directing makes the movie an instant classic. Nolan strikes again.

Most of the time, when a smart movie comes along, it requires more than one viewing to understand what is going on. Take Vanilla Sky or even the Matrix for example. Inception was very intelligent, but I understood everything quite well after one viewing. I feel like most people in the audience felt very well connected to the characters in the show as well.

I was excited to see this movie and disappointed. It starts off at high speed with all this dream stuff and it's like learning science while chasing the teacher down the hallway. I guess I'm not as bright as I thought I was because it took a third of the movie for me to follow what they were talking about. If there was an existing "dreamwalker" science to anchor to it might have been better. The special effects were good and I started to get into it after a while. If you don't need much of a plot premise and only care about freight trains running through the streets, go for it. I want my money back.

If there's one thing that I came out of "Inception" knowing for sure it's that Christopher Nolan has got some brilliant ideas in that head of his- most of which have trouble getting out and translating to the big screen without losing some aspect of effective storytelling. Like "The Prestige," "Inception" is an idea being pitched for the majority of its running time while the dialogue is almost entirely expositional to the point where even character's emotions are explained rather than emoted as they happen. It's almost as if you're watching a tutorial for a dream program that uses striking visuals to keep your attention. The ultimate difference between the two films is that "Inception" is better, if only because its idea is better (and maybe because it doesn't have its own version of "The Illusionist" to challenge it), but they are both devoid of the kind of emotion that makes for a completely satisfying experience. Yes, "Inception" engages the mind, (it better for its world to make one iota of sense) but it's heart rarely beats enough for it to be called alive. Nolan insists that the events that transpire here are what happen to one after he or she sleeps, but death or at least lifelessness would more accurately describe what shows up on screen afterward.
The acting is serviceable, but unremarkable- the script is as much to blame for that as the actors are. The characters here serve as plot devices, making their fates (which aren't in much jeopardy to begin with when in the dream state) less worried about than in the usual reality-based thriller. Leonardo DiCaprio's Cobb is a Cliffsnotes version of the character he played in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," wherein both are haunted by deceased wives while attempting to navigate through elaborate mazes of the mind; one more convincingly than the other might I add (I will be more devastated to see his performance in "Inception" recognized with an Oscar nomination than not at all for the deeply tortured portrayal he gives in "Shutter Island"). The only performance with some weight in it belongs to Marion Cotillard, who plays an imprisoned memory of Cobb's late wife with frightening tragedy. If nominations are given in the category of acting for this movie (and at this point, I imagine that there will be many), hers better be the only one mentioned because it's the only one that's deserved if forced to pick one.
For all that's lacking in the script's emotional depth, Hans Zimmer's score makes up for with instrumental pieces of sweeping intensity that tell a deeper story than what's shown. There were moments in the film when all I wanted was for one of the characters to shut up and let the music tell the story- it's less pretentious that way, not to mention more soothing- but instead speeches were only intermittently muted by Zimmer's fog-horn interludes.
As for the cinematography- it's expectantly exceptional, although I'm still a little bit underwhelmed by Nolan's vision of the dream. From the trailers, I was expecting more of what was shown in terms of cities folding into each other, rising stair cases, and bulldozing freight trains driving through crowded intersections. Instead what we get is only a slightly different version of reality- which I don't mind- to each his own- but my dreams tend to be a little crazier... and would have sent Cobb to the token machine at least twenty-three times before reaching a lengthier stretch of continuous game play.
By now I've probably painted an overall negative response to "Inception," but I think I should make a clear point of saying flat-out that I was still impressed. There's some ingenuity crafted in the action here that hasn't been seen since "The Matrix" and the idea, although overly explained in my opinion, breathes new life into a genre that has become as stale as that of the zombies (the heist movie is so formulaic that it has tendency to bore rather than excite). It's biggest mistake as a heist movie though is its expository conversation about the heist itself throughout the entire movie between all of its characters! I didn't care about any of them and the emotional whalop Nolan expects from his audience at the end fizzes out to an amusing gimmick that causes us to question the reality of everything we've just seen.
In the end I was expecting more and perhaps I'll get more from a second viewing, but at this point, as my first impression- I'm disappointed with the final product.

Ever since the original Matrix, we've been waiting for another movie that can visually blast our brains. This is finally it. Visually, the movie delivers like few movies in history. Be warned, your head may actually hurt after this as it is borderline tiring to watch.
But the movie is much more than just the visuals. Hans Zimmer produces his most subtle score to date and may be in line for an Oscar nomination.
The story doesn't disappoint either, though the emotional impact is somewhat lessened by the mind numbing spectacle on screen. A quick start gets the ball rolling fast and strong performances all around keep you hooked in.

I was beginning to wonder about the plot, and quality of acting, for the first 15 minutes. However, the movie started taking off and required my full attention to keep up with all the "layers" of dreams. It was an interesting and original plot. 4.5 Stars, A-,overall definetly worth seeing on the big screen. Only reason not 5 stars... frenetic pace. They pile it on, scene after scene, like trying take a drink of water from a fire hose throughout the entire 2.5hrs- starts to burn you out just a wee bit. Other than that, special effects are great, acting and storyline are pretty solid (better pay attention) and don't sneak out for a bathroom break or you might get lost by the time you get back. Good summer swill at the movies on a hot day for sure.

The premise to Inception was brilliant. The acting by all was excellent, however there were moments with Dom and Mal that just went on and on to no point. Very hard to follow! Too many things happening at once makes it very hard to follow. WARNING - do not step out for the bathroom or when you come back you'll be even more lost! Effects and actors (especially Leonardo DiCaprio!) were great, just story line was hard to follow. Although my husband loved it.

Somewhere between 2000 and 2010, it has become almost impossible to go see a movie at the theaters where the plot is just as entertaining as the effort put into the FX, the looks of the actors, the soundtrack, etc. The very few that have made the cut, stand head and shoulders above the rest - Gladiator, etc. Although Inception may not come close to the epic feel of a movie like Gladiator, still I believe its going to stand out as such a gem from 2010; the actors pull off a great performance, the visual art and cinematography is excellent, the plot and story telling is compelling, theres action and emotional closeness all in one. It also helps that the subject matter isnt a 3d remake of an old 70s movie. I'll give this movie a three word closing review - "Go see it!"

Wow, this was an awesome film. The cast was fabulous, and the story is just off the charts. The most creative science fiction films I've seen since the Matrix. Just go see it.

seriously head trippy ride.. makes you think.. and think for a while afterward. Might be too conceptual and complex for some people to follow or appreciate, but interesting if you strain the brain a bit. Biggest criticism was the audio mix. Music was way way way too loud,.. drowning out a good bit of the actors' dialogue. Unnecessary and frustrating.
