Definitely in the top 5 list of all-time best movies I have seen. The effects were amazing and the story line compelling.
I am a conservative Republican and had already heard about the bias of the movie towards left-wing, global warming, capitalistic evilness. However, political values aside, the movie was superb and all should see it. Cameron has created his masterpiece in Avatar. Palulukan lives!!!!

read others for the gorgeous sights to be seen on this movie as it truly is the entire strength of this movie. however the storyline is Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves on a more tired level. Its such a shame to let the story/plot go - i can only imagine what it would've been like if the movie had both plot and visuals....

I have to say first that this is my first IMAX and first 3D movie, it definitely won't be the last. Granted the dialouge was a little corny, but who cares when the sound and visual quality are as good as this. This movie kept my wife and I tense and engaged from the opening scene to the final credit. Avatar is a movie about the distant future and appeared to be filmed and made in that same time period. You've got to go see it.

My wife and I went to see Avatar in the new IMAX theater in Rockaway, New Jersey. We have never been to an IMAX and wow, what a movie to see for the first one !! We felt like we were in the movie. James Cameron and all of the staff who worked on this masterpiece should all win Oscars. I would recommend the movie to everyone who is in love with nature , the environment and each other to go see it.

the first must-see 3D movie I have come across. stunning visuals. I normally just watch at home where I can pause but this was one that must be seen on the biggest screen possible so the IMAX was a plus as well. only down side is the story line is pretty boiler plate but oh well, its more a ride anyway. looking forward to when the tech catches up so you can experience this in your own home.

I am in awe of Cameron's achievement. This is an arduous undertaking for an artist and his crew, and they deserve full credit for what must have been a mammoth task. It will prove to do no less than revolutionize the tools of imaginative filmakers for years to come.
As far as I'm concerned, the blend of CGI and live action was seamless, as was the 3D effect throughout the film. The packed IMAX 3D audience I saw this with did not utter a peep for three hours. They knew they were witnessing technological history.

I went to see this in IMAX 3D. I don't think anyone will argue that the movie 'experience' is absolutely stunning. This is what I went for but the story was a nice surprise. Really liked the angle showing (warning?) the bad side of human greed and disregard for nature. I give it 10/10 for movie experience and 8/10 for story line. Overall an absolute must see for everyone!

I have always been an appreciator of James Cameron films. He's gifted, talented and capable of great things.
AVATAR is not one of them.
This film was heavy handed, over- political, doctrine-driven, and difficult to stomach. Visually stunning? Yes. But I really took issue with glorifying video game worlds vs. reality. I'm all for enjoyment, but this movie had Mother Earth as God, humans as evil, government as destroyer and it just went way too far. Finally, the cliches were SO obvious---this was a retread of "Dances with Wolves, Tarzan, the final showdown of Aliens....disappointing to the extreme. I'll never get that $45 or 3 hours back. Not a fan.

This movie is an excellent combination of superior graphic design and creative writing, and is by far one of the most unusual movies my wife and I have ever seen. The Si-Fi action plus the heart moving romance kept us spellbound throughout the entire movie, and the IMAX 3D made it feel as though we were inside this incredible land. There were many heart felt moments that made you want to laugh, cry, and fight. But most of all was the love story that was surrounded by such beautiful art and imagination. Take someone you love to see this movie and learn the special phrases they spoke to each other. A perfect plot with this amazing performance deserves greater than a 5 star rating.

Good movie; GREAT 3D, GREAT IMAX. Lousy crowd control and ticket process. I'd brave the 1 hour wait again as the movie was THAT good, but it is ridiculous that in 2010 (almost) we can't reserve ASSIGNED seats and have to resort to standing in line for an hour to get a decent seat. GET with the program and offer what other Theater chains offer in Select Seating.

B- the film is technically flawless but the climax is loosely thrown together, not enough thought went into the "how" of it all. It's very reminiscent of 'The Abyss' but unfortunately I've already seen 'The Abyss'. I really liked the idea of the Na'vi being so intertwined with their environment but it was a bit ham fisted to suppose that everyone gets downloaded to the Gaia mainframe when they die. I'm sure they could have come up with a better excuse to get Jake into his avatar permanently, he could have made his avatar save him and inadvertently the avatar pony tail tendrils could have jack into the life pod or whatever. You may not totally like it but you have to see it and I would definitely see it in 3D.

Though the movie is almost 3 hrs long, the story line and action keep you glued to the screen. There is an underlying message that you may not realize the first time you see the movie. I would recommend seeing it more than once.

I couldn't believe the reality of the 3D affects in this movie. Some images appeared to be right in front of your face and depth perception was almost uncanny in that you felt as though you were falling over the edge of a cliff in the scene. At times I could feel the "vertigo" from the heighths. The story line was well done, although not original. . However, my only complaint would be that the film makers used the opportunity to make political comments aimed primarily at the US and previous political figures. I'm tired of the "apologies" and the guilt trips we are supposed to have for being Americans. We are and always have been a beacon to the world and God forbid we should ever be ashamed of that.

Go and watch Avatar in 3D IMAX. Avatar is by far the movie with the best 3D effects ever. Yes, the story line is not very exciting but - those effects. The movie really sucks you in and you feel not like watching a movie but like being in it. If you have the chance to watch it in 3D IMAX - go and do it. It is worth every penny. A piece of advise: Try to sit in the center line, the row doesn't matter really - we sat in the first row and still it was a great experience.

Avatar will definitely be THE benchmark for CG movies in the future. Ridiculous attention to detail lines this excellently paced, well written (and thankfully not contrived) storyline. A truly 3-dimensional protagonist rounds out to make for quite possibly the best movie of 2009. WATCH this, (and in 3-D; you really don't want to miss this in 3-D).

Avatar in IMAX 3D is an unbelievable, spectacular experience. I had to remind myself to blink. It was a moving work of art. It was movies as you dream they should be. Although the story line and dialogue are not tremendously clever or original, it is a classic heroic love story, and the rest of the movie is a beautiful experience. My children and retired parents were all speechless with wonder when it was over, and the time went by in a blink. No one got up during the entire movie.

If you choose to see it, then IMAX 3D is recommended. The 3D effect, and beautifully rendered computer assisted and generated scenes and textures are lovely to see. (The physics are sacrificed in favor of visual impact.)
Do not expect any awe-inspiring science fiction that asks and answers "what if" questions--this is best left to the classic science fiction books, from which many ideas are taken in a tastes-good smorgasboard of concepts. The ideas are sci-fi lite; it's fast food for the mind, with no deep nourishment.
The action moves along at a good pace, with predictable character development and story arc.
This is a decent comfort movie where you won't have to think, and you can just sit back and enjoy the 3D.

Of course reviews are preferences. I was and still am amazed by this movie. It feels and looks soooooo realistic. I'm totally blown away! I liked how there were not but one semi high profile actor/actress in Avatar. I think it made the film more engrossing. The story flowed and was flawless as flawless can be. For me the 2.5 hours went by like that! some people i talked too got warn out after a bit with the 3d imax version. I had no problem. I'm going to see it again tomorrow but on the largest imax screen in Washington and no 3d. I probably didn't say much in all reality, but check it out especially if you enjoy sci fi and you'll be amazed. Compared to all movies that have come out to now, its definitely worth your money.

Its not a movie, its an experience really applies to this one. This movie has great special effects and you have to watch this movie in IMAX 3-D. But the whole movie is predictable and filled with cliches. Its like Matrix, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars hashed together. It was exhausting everytime there was a reference to indigineous people as terrorists by the war mongers. There are so many references to the Iraq war that its too much! In the end, its a fun ride and a good experience.

One of the few science fiction movies where both the science and the plot hang together and they don't loose track of the details. It is very expensive to grow an avatar body, so only the science types have one, the grunts have only the original human 1.0 version, except for the hero who is twin to his late brother, the PhD who spent three years learning the autochthon's language. Being identical to his late twin, he gets an avatar. By the way, every penny they spent on special effects was well worth it. This is a fully realized alien world (well, moon).
