Yes, this movie rehashes other plots like Dances With Wolves, but so what? There are no new plots. This story entertains from beginning to end. I could see where it was going to go as soon as I saw Jake couldn't walk and the Avatar could. It didn't spoil the story a bit. The sets were fantastic. The environmental themes are important and timely. One value of science fantasy is its ability to let us experience truth about our own lives because we can see things in a different way. This movie offers us that opportunity. The movie is full of action for the guys, has a love story for the gals, and has a theme of stewardship we should seriously consider. What more can you ask for?

I took my two children to see this movie as a Christmas gift to them. I thought that I would not be this excited about this kind of movie, but after the end credits started to roll, I found myself talking excitedly with my son about the action scenes, and my daughter loved the love story part of it. We all agreed the the imagery was phenomenal, and if we had had more time we would have gone to see the movie again. I would recommend this to all my family and friends as the best way to spend 2 hours and 40 minutes at the movie theater.

This movie was the most incredible visual experience I have ever seen. Definitely see it in 3D. Storyline was not that original but James Cameron again tops any movie ever made. The sheer detail of the fight sequences and the scenery is incredible. Probably not a movie my young kids or my Grandma would want to see but it is a alot of fun for everyone else. James Cameron sets the bar high for any other 3D movies to come. Get out there and see it today!!!

Yes,it's the same old storyline, but done in a visually stunning way. It incorporated many layers of themes so there's a little something for everyone. It's like Matrix meets Dances With Wolves meets Star Wars meets Fern Gully (1992 Australian animation released by 20th Century Fox) with visual effects adding a depth of thrill the aforementioned weren't capable of providing.Perhaps when more of humanity's consciousness is elevated to the point where soulful right-action is more common-place,then maybe humanity's films will become less repetitive and the storylines will broaden and deepen.Art reflects life and consciousness.See Avatar (in IMAX 3-D if you can) and enjoy the ride!

I looked up the word AVATAR...I never heard the word before .... I thought maybe James Cameron made up a new word !!! Really loved the movie---but it was a little long ... and I had to shut my eyes during the slaughtering......the villan was a nasty man .... Wonderful special effects and cinematography, as everyone says. But the story was extremely predictable. The overall arc is basically Dances with Wolves in blue paint, but with a happy ending for the hero. Worse, the development from one scene to the next in key dramatic moments was obvious. Strip away the effects and what have you got? A mediocre SF-fantasy story about the evils of human civilization and the nobility of primitives who nevertheless need to be saved by the rare ethical white man. You've seen that before. Recommended for the spectacle, not the story.

Over and over I had heard the same comment from family and friends: "You have GOT to see Avatar in IMAX 3D!" So finally my husband and I did just that and WOW! What an amazing movie! The integration between reality and computer generation was stunning, and while at first I was more impressed by the 3D aspect than the plot, it didn't take long for the the plot to become interesting as well. I would recommend this movie to others in a heart beat, and am hoping that when it comes out on DVD that they offer the same 3D experience (and glasses) that was offered in the theater experience.

The movie possesses every emotion, from love to anger, to anticipation and expectation, to everything possible.
I would recommend this movie to people of all ages. I would not recommend it to younger children - I feel fear rather than entertainment would be a factor.
I predict the movie, Avatar, will be up for several Oscar nominations, and rightfully so.

Avatar is truly a revolutionary film in so far as the experience is concerned. Hollywood has been bleeding ground to independents, bollywooders and pirates faster and faster lately in part because the theatre experience has grown passé even for blockbusters. Avatar in 3D, particularly on an Imax screen reignites the movie going experience. It is a highly immersive experience which is important in order for the audience to care about the characters, particularly in an age where video games can look as real as real life and many of them are more blind violence than story. The experience is worth every dime.

I am not a huge fan of science fiction movies, however this movie was amazing! The acting is wonderful, the story really pulls you in and gives you an opportunity to really get to know and care about the characters which i think is key for a great movie. I saw it in 3D both times and I don't think you've really seen this movie unless you've seen it in Imax 3D. Even though it was a long movie it really never seemed like it. You just don't want it to end. The visual effects were unbelievable. I wanted to reach out and touch everything. I've seen it twice already and could actually watch it again!

The movie is a plot re-make of dozens of earlier ones - ugly civilized despoilers of nature pushing native population off their beloved natural paradise to strip mine for whatever. Dances with Wolves, etc. Well, at least they'll get to open casinos in a few decades. An OK action movie set on a distant and visually exotic planet.
The IMAX 3D experience makes it all super-spectacular and well worth enduring the only OK plot for 3 hours. See it in IMAX 3D or don't see it at all.

We were so expectant of an amazing theater experience when we went to see Avatar on the IMAX on New Years' Eve. Unfortunately, the story was the same old song and dance we've seen many times with little to no character development. When will Hollywood realize that the American Public can handle complexity and original ideas? Rather they hand us the usual bad guys vs. good guys culminating in a massive battle. B-O-R-I-N-G!!

The effects in this movie are amazing. During several scenes I felt I was drawn into the screen and became apart of the movie. It was extraordinary and an adventerous escape which ended way too soon (it's a quick 2 hours and 40 minutes)! A MUST SEE TO BELIEVE!

Avatar had great special effects and direction but it had the same white supremacist theme as many Hollywood movies, only the main character was covered in blue skin.
The main character manages to learn the ins-and-outs of an entire culture, and go through an ancient initiation ceremony in three months. Then he manages to "save" the oh-so-forgiving natives by taking over leadership, even though he was the one who revealed the necessary secrets for their people to be brutally attacked--twice! James Cameron should stick to directing and let writers do the script writing.

I have seen a lot of movies, so the plot and story line are not at all new to me. The 3D IMAX experience is new to me. I would not recommend seeing this on a full stomach, I felt all the movement in the movie. It was like being on a rollercoaster ride. I was still dizzy several hours later! Kids under 12 will definitely enjoy the action and 3D experience, Older kids (I'm 40) won't be as engaged by the movie, but can understand all the hype surrounding the actual making of the movie. Personally, this will not make me want to go see another IMAX 3D movie, but it was definitely an immersive experience.

This movie was absolutely fantastic! It's so funny too, because I hadn't even paid attention to all the hype or reviews or anything, I just went to go see it with my friends... I was absolutely astounded. One of the best movies I've ever seen in my life, I've even gone twice already now and plan on going AGAIN tonight!
I do recommend seeing it in IMAX 3D if you can, best way to experience this wonderful masterpiece James Cameron has graced this planet with.

Outstanding Special effects. The flora alone on the planet was amazing. The 3D made it special. It actually looked fairly real when they were way up in the sky. You didn't want to fall. The aliens looked good, not over done or over complex. The NASA promo before was also a very good use of 3D.

Great special effects certainly make any film more entertaining, but a tired, rehashed storyline is hard to overcome. For $300 million, Cameron should have gotten somebody to do a little more work on the script! If you ever saw the children's animated film, "Fern Gulley" you have seen this film with about an hour to spare. The well worn themes of "going native" and "nobility of savages" have been explored in hundreds of films from "Dancing with Wolves" to "The Last Samurai". Continuity errors were legion in this film--maybe post production was rushed to get it into theatres for Christmas.
In all fairness, the special effects were spectacular and the extra money to see it at an IMAX 3D theatre was well worth it.
