Good story-line (though predictable in a cliche'-esque fashion) to complement an excellent and industry-changing special effects job by James Cameron. Saw this in Imax & 3D, and can't imagine seeing it any other way. It felt like a nearly 3 hour roller coaster ride, bringing the viewer into the movie both emotionally and physically. The story-line was good, but not great. I say this only because it was quite predictable. Had it not been for the 3D, IMAX, special affects, technological advances, etc....Avatar would be a 2.5 star movie, average at best.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

What a fantastic fantasy-we saw it in IMAX 3D and only seconds into it, the real world simply faded away as I became completely immersed in Pandora-the sights, sounds, the beautiful natives. I loved the message the Na'vi reminded us of the need to care for our Mother and be connected with our Earth.Great story, effects and kept me totally engaged for the whole movie

Right from the start, I was swept away , the use of 3D was brilliant, best time i've ever had at the movies, made me want to go live there, a young child seated next to me kept trying to touch the images, it moved me in ways I can't explain still, I'm going back in a couple of days, i think i'll bring a sleeping bag, no bbq though that would mess up the movie.

I agree with others that have said that it is not worth the extra money to see this movie in the IMAX format. I have seen both the IMAX and the standard screen REAL3D format. The IMAX seemed to be blurry and not as clean of a picture and the REAL3D format. I would recommend the standard format with the REAL3D format over the IMAX 3D format.
One more issue with the IMAX version the AMC Olathe Studio 30 reused the IMAX glasses. This cannot be a very healthy! Who knows who had the glasses before me and what kind of germs they had. Cleaning the glasses does not always make them safe to give to someone else.

3D imaging has finally evolved to where we can truly make our dreams real in photorealistic detail. The choice between film and digital will now only be artistic/financial.
Even though the theme of reconnecting with one's true place in the world through contact with a more "primitive" society is not new, this film made me not care.
I was fully immersed in this world. The images, characters, and music blended seamlessly to make me really care and feel for what was happening. Afterward I felt as fully reconnected with things as a week's backpacking trip in the mountains.
I fully endorse seeing this film in IMAX-3D. After a few minutes adjustment, I completely fell into the film and the world.

Seeing it in IMAX was in fact my second time seeing the movie (all though first time wasn't in 3D) and I am bringing a friend to see it in IMAX later this week! Amazing movie, stunning in look, deep in feel, absolutely beautiful. It has actually inspired me to change my life. It has also inspired me to stop watching movies I know are going to be mediocre. There is no point when there is beauty like this out there! I would also recommend people spend more time outside and see the beauty we have.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. My wife talked me into the 3D version, and I was glad. This is one of the very few movies (in my entire life) I know I will see again. What a story. What great visual effects. This will go down as one of the all-time great pioneering movies. Some of these young actors have put a stamp on their careers. James Cameron has simply added to his.

Simply the most amazing movie I have ever seen! While the story line is Fern Gulley on steroids, it keeps you holding your breath for the entire 2hrs and 40 mins. You HAVE to sit in the first few rows of the IMAX 3D if you are fortunate enough to see this movie in one of these theaters. You will feel you are actually on Pandora experiencing what the characters are in real time. KUDOS and may you win big at the awards this year!

This movie is the first since the premiere of the first Star Wars movie when I was a kid in the 70's that I have felt a need to see a second time while still in the theatres.
Even though I don't actually agree with a lot of the political points it is trying to make, it makes those points so very well. It succeeds in terms of its revolutionary technique. And it succeeds in telling a compelling story.
Absolutely everyone - even those who are convinced they can't stand the sci fi/fantasy genre - needs to see this film, and in IMAX 3D. Drag them there if necessary.

One of the best films I've ever seen. Truly a revolution in movie making, and will be seen in the future as a major milestone in the history of film. While the story is fairly conventional (not that that's bad in an epic movie), the imagery totally transports and immerses you in the work that Cameron has created. It's not even until the movie is over that you fully appreciate what you've seen -- the effects are so seamless that you don't even make note of them while you're watching. Truly amazing.

This could be the movie that establishes the 3D format. It is both a financial and artistic success.
The movie has a simple story line. Science fiction is a fairly straight forward genre, the stories consist of a few ideas and interesting characters. What would you expect from a genre whose most complex character was named HAL? This is fantasy made up of gorgeous, beautiful images. There is no place else you would see blue people and flying creatures as colorful as the rainbow.
I saw it in IMAX 3-D, I can't wait to see it again.

The story is basic ferngully or the exploitation of the indigious population anywhere. But this is a movie you dont really see for the story. It is a work of art and the first in probably what will be the future of movies. The incandescent forest was breathtaking. This is a movie you visit like a national park thus go see it in 3D IMAX.
Be prepared for awe.

Usually when I tell people not to miss a movie, I mean it's a great movie. Avatar is not a great movie. It is just visually an unparalleled movie; altogether worth the price of admission for IMAX 3D. If you can, see it in IMAX, if you can't, see it in regular 3D. If you can't see it in either, don't bother. The acting is generally excellent; but they suffered from a weak script. It has great moments, and horrid ones. This movie is variably a slam on capitalism or US foreign policy, and not deft at either one. All that aside, the visual effects were amazing, and shouldn't be missed. If you are after the plot or acting, small screen is enough. Don't miss this on the big screen; it’s unlikely this will translate well to the small screen.

The wonders of the imagination, plus a major bunch of cash, energy, creativity, and commitment to the project, all come together to create a world with passion. The messages are a bit obvious, and the plot a bit manipulative, but who cares. It certainly got me. I knew the outcome long before it happened and I was mesmerized. A great, repeat, great experience.

Plot was predictable and the character development was not nearly deep enough. Many aspects of the story line were too unoriginal with the kind of allusive symbolism taught in 9th grade. My favorite example was the steal from Rock & Bulwinkle’s “upsidasium” complete with flying mountains. Despite the 3D effects, the directing was 2D with some over-used tricks such as the occasional rapid zoom “news footage” effect. With that said, I was very entertained by the effects, action and what character development there was. I would recommend it. It was just disappointing that the production company chose a book that was not as strong as the technology, a mistake I have never seen from companies like Pixar.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Its not worth the extra hassle or money to see this in IMAX, since its not really IMAX. Its more like a larger than normal screen, but not close to the size of IMAX. I saw it an AMC that claimed to have an IMAX, but I think they're just abusing the name.
Other than that, the movie was still visually really cool. Story and soundtrack could have used more attention, but worth a see.
