The first half of Avatar is spectacular. The effects are awesome. The world of Pandora is beautifully imagined. The second half is too violent and noisy and the stereotypes of bad military, good scientists and spiritual alien natives were just too much for me. Greatly enjoyed the 3D effects at first but was dizzy by the time Avatar was over.

as a movie, i give it a B-. as a cinematic experience, it gets an A. The world he created is amazing. Too bad he is trapped in the hollywood cliches of good guy duking it out w/ bad guy as the climactic scene. Another "anti-militarism" movie that glorifies war. sigh

People should be advised to take something for motion sickness before going to this 3D movie. i had to shut my eyes and missed 3/4 of the movie. I would like to see the other version because it sounded like a good movie.

We saw Avatar in Real 3D twice and our third time in Imax 3D. Real 3D does not do this movie justice. Seeing it in Imax 3D is like seeing it for the first time. The movie is amazingly beautiful. The story is compelling. Jake is the hero we all root for, the disabled ex-marine who starts off fighting for the wrong side and then realizes that he has fallen in love with the forest, the people and the beautiful Neytiri. Combat scenes are awesome and seeing it in Imax 3D allows you to feel them in all their glory. We took our 8 year old and he absolutely loved it. We highly recommend Avatar in Imax 3D.

Not the typical special effects blockbuster as it has an actual story!
Like most plots, it was predictable, but the way they got there was unique. It was more than Earth with odd animals and weird looking people and they used that in the story. They did an excellent job of making it a different world.
The CG action is the best that I've seen. When CG and live characters were together, the difference wasn't noticable. It was easy to forget that they were CG characters. They looked very real and so did the planet.
The 3D effects were outstanding. It was an excellent adaptation and they used the effects to enhance the movie, not show off 3D.
I enjoyed movie for the plot, scenery and special effects. I'd definitely see it again.

Not sure if it was the 3D experience that made this movie so amazing, but I really got into the movie - felt like I was there. Original story line and amazing graphics. Would definitely recommend anyone to watch this. I may watch this again. However, I do recommend sitting a few seats back so your glasses cover the whole screen. I think I sat a little too close.

This is a fantastic movie, and in 3D becomes more like a visit to a beautiful alien world.
The plot can be somewhat predictable in places, but it's still moving.
You feel like you're exploring the world with Jake, the visuals and biology of this unique world are amazing.
In IMAX 3D it's even better. You really feel like you're in the alien world alongside Jake.
Highly recommended in the theater until all of our TV's are converted to 3D :)

Avatar is great 3D entertainment that smoothly integrates CGI into live action shots, and that's why you should see it. The visuals are amazing, and the imagination put into the technology and nature on Pandora are a lot of fun. On the flipside, the characters are one-dimensional and the dialogue is terrible. The movie's bad guys are the worst. Their characters are merely vehicles for the plot, and have zero redeeming qualities. This is not a film to spur moral questions; it's a movie promoting a certain view of humanity's best and worst natures--a James Cameron fairy tale. Go see if for fun (and for Michelle Rodriquez) and don't expect too much in the way of depth.

The only flaw was the story line ... too much of an analogy to the confiscation of American Indian lands ... Although the bad guys lose this time a better outcome would be the bad guys had a strong leader who said this is wrong and then implemented a solution that worked for all ... The folks who wrote this missed a huge opportunity to use their creative genius to solve difficult problems without losers.

I've seen this movie a total of 3 times now and the first 2 times were in regular 3D and this last time was on an IMAX 3D and words cannot describe how much more magnificent this movie was on IMAX then on a regular 3D Screen. I highly recommend this to anyone.

I'd heard the buzz but nothing can prepare you for the sensory immersion - sight, sound, impact - of this movie. Good story, driven home with a sensitive touch. A few plot twists and I'd have like a bit more background at the beginning but the unfolding story was beautiful.

The special effects were spectacular! I was able to suspend belief and accept the Navi as real. The storyline was a bit predictable, but it was told with passion and inventiveness. The 3-D glasses were a bit cheesey.

One of the few examples where the special effects saves a mediocre movie. The story you've heard a thousand times. One-dimensional characters and dialogue. Predictable and boring in many places. There's also the common liberal theme of "Americans are evil" that runs through the entire film.
However, even with the cliched script, this movie is really, really good. And it's because of the special effects. They really do immerse you into the movie and draw your attention away from the weak script. You must see it in 3D or IMAX 3D, or you are wasting your time.
I would recommend this movie to just about anybody. It really is a phenomenol breakthrough in special effects. If it doesn't win the Oscar for that, it will be a tragedy.

I saw Avatar in Imax 3D and was amazed. Yea, wearing those crazy glasses for 2 and half hours isn't the best, but it was well worth it! Amazing graphics and I liked the story line, very heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, and made me think about the human race. I want to live on Pandora!!

This is a perfect action movie for geeks that is also an immensely successful "chick flick" romance. It is a very rare Sci Fi/Fantasy movie that appeals to both me and my wife! The visuals are stunning with 3D not overdone and actually adding to your immersion in the story.. The plot line covers the spectrum from good people versus bad people, boy meets girl, klutz versus talent, to the greater "human condition." The expression "I see you" becomes real in this movie.

I wouldn't say that this movie had the best plot - it was fairly predictable and had been done before. However - the movie itself in the way that it was put together and done all came together in a great, pleasing 3 hour story. The CG was absolutely the best - I highly recommend watching this in 3D - after watching it in the 3D I don't think I could watch it without that feature!

Seeing this in Imax 3d was like seeing Starwars for the first time when I was a kid. It sets the standard for blockbusters in this era. Worth the money and the hour long wait in line! Just plan your day early for this one. Tickets sell out fast-so by them in advance. Get there early for the best seats, squeeze in, there won't be an empty seat!

This is an excellent movie. The animation was absolutely amazing and well ahead of its time. At times it was hard for me to deciher between the animated and real characters. The story line was engaing, comprehensive as well as entertaining. But most of all I was entralled with the imagination of the creator with all the different inhabitants and scenes on Pandora. Looking forward to seening it again.
