I haven't been genuinely wowed by a movie in a long, long time. (District 9 surprised me, I quite liked that.) Reitman puts a ton of ordinary things on screen... extraordinarily well. And he makes it look easy. But the film is engaging, sharp, witty, poignant, all that stuff. And it sparkles somehow. The tone is light and weighty all at once. In my humble opinion, he's a new and improved version of Alexander Payne, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, etc. A clever, deeply penetrating movie about humanity and human relationships and complex characters, without cramming the point down your throat. Elegantly made, beautifully written, very well acted... Jason Reitman is officially on my absurdly talented directors to watch list.

The movie was well made and thought-provoking. It was not, however, a good Christmas movie, particularly during these tough economic times. What a sad bunch of characters! I found the movie entertaining and it kept my attention. The casting was excellent and the characters well-developed. Clooney's sidekick was flawless in her portrayal of the up and coming corporate "star." She was so believable that I found myself wondering if she were an actress.

In that I travel well over 100 days a year, I could relate to this story. George Clooney is at his best, and I'm happy to see the grey in his hair and maturity in style. The story will hit home, maybe too hard, for those with recent job losses in their family. But it is nothing if not poignant and heartfelt - it feels quite real. Some will claim the weak spot as Anna Kendrick, the top-of-the-class business school hire at Clooney's firm with prim and proper, textbook ways. But I have known several of these types at my firms in past years, and there really is no overacting. Every frame of this film is real - in someone's life. It is not spectacular or shattering, but mindful and memorable in the best ways of a well-told story.

A script that pretends to be profound but isn't. I didn't care what happened to any of the characters, most of whom had the moral wisdom of Tiger Woods. Totally predictable so-called plot "twists" (like the person who gets fired who threatens to jump off a bridge -- GUESS WHAT HAPPENS !?!). The scene where the young women colleague gets dumped by her boyfriend and cries in Clooney's arms has to be the worst acted embarrassment of 2009. A real waste of time.

WIthout giving away the plot, this movie doesn't end as you might expect it...which is a nice surprise. Clooney is great and the issues brought up throughout the movie are compelling. Wonder how much American Airlines paid to have its brand showcased so much? :-)

While not exactly cheerful, very perceptive on American culture now! George Clooney is Everyman trapped in the system. He gives an Oscar-worthy performance. I don't know why this movie got good critic reviews. It's just basically "When Harry Met Sally" or "Sleepless in Seattle" or pretty much any Hugh Grant movie.
It's got all the stereotypical elements -- man falling in love, having second thoughts, longing for girl, regretting himself, etc.
The first hour is very tired. I kept thinking, what is the point of this movie? It gets a little better, but it is not a smart movie. It's a $1.99 rental basically.

I liked the movie and would recommend it, but I have never a film stray so far from the book. Natalie and her new system never appears in the book, but adds a conflict that is interesting. The relationship with Alex is altered significantly. The ending twist in the book is likewise altered. Having said all of that, the resulting film is worthwhile, Clooney plays the part well and there is some t errific, thought-proving dialogue.

Great one liners, George Clooney is excellent. As a "road warrior" myself, he captures life in the air perfectly. Everyone in the movie does a fine job. Story does require you to be able to think and reflect on priorities. It did not go or end where I thought it would so it was not as predictable as I expected. Will definitely cause you to pause as you enjoy the Holidays.

Forget the hype. This is a very well-made dark and modern comedy of manners. But don't expect belly laughs; much of the humor is uneasy. There is a range of genuine human emotion, a brash young woman grows up, and a 'no commitment' guy finds his heart and has it broken. But the real stars are the recently fired, who crumble before us--and they are the ones who break our hearts.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie had a few laughs, but was overall a downer. I don't get what all the fuss is about! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has recently lost a job, or to someone whose job security is questionable.

This is a really wonderful movie, both funny and incredibly timely. Clooney is just a pleasure to watch, and he is best when he puts on the movie star hat and lets the charm shine, letting a bit of pathos through the glimmer.
But it IS a film about the economic crisis and downsizing. It is not only about Clooney up in the air flying but about how everyone's life becomes up in the air when they lose their jobs and bearings. The ultimate message in the film is about the lack of safety and security in the world, and that no matter how confident we may be, being "up in the air" may be the fate of all of us. So if you don't want to reflect on such things, don't see the movie.

Based on what I read from critics, I was expecting a lot more, a sort of Cohen Bros or Tarantino movie, but I got a dull, slow, old movie. It is hard to accept the same guy who did Thank you for Smoking failed to deliver so much. Best picture of the year? How come??
