In class of itself. I have seen it many times and listened to various versions with various casts. This was the Best Christina ever and close to the best Phantom (up there with Michael Crawford's original one. Overall 5 starts and then some. And the "bonus" finale gala was a treat, although Ms. Sara Brightman's voice failed her - either she was not well or just paled in comparison with the night's star- the prior phantoms were just phenomenal.
I saw it more than one time. The first viewing (Nov. 21) in a theater packed, made it impossible to enjoy the movie fully (loud reactions around me). But i went back with my mom (84). We both loved it. It is beautifully composed: great feel, color palate, atmosphere and music. The young actors give as nuanced performances as you could expect from much more seasoned pros. I will see it again. Mr. Lautner's development as an actor, since the first movie, is astounding. But Ms. Stewart is the queen of understated expression. The only criticism: Mr. Pattinson's make up while much more consistent than in the first movie, is too powdery-covering and Mr. Rathbone's hair is ridiculous (distracting).
Weak remake of Christie Alley and Tim Allen's equally weak movie "For Richer..." but SJP and HG are both charming so I would recommend it for viewing when in need of mindless entertainment (we all feel that need once in a while)
Both thumbs up. Excellently scripted acted and directed. I will see it again. Anna Kendrick steals the show. The ending is a credit to the movie makers. And, Mr. Clooney is as vintage as ever possible. (The older and longer breathing the better.)
The sparse set emphasizes the emotional charge of this masterpiece. Not only the singing but the acting was glorious, riveting, spine tingling. I have never seen or heard Karita Mattila before but I am going to seek her recordings, now. Mr. Alvarez is an emotional and yet cheerful Cavaradossi - which only enhances the tragedy of the outcome, and Mr. Ganidze is as scary and devilish as I have ever seen Scarpia. Bravi! (But the 3 half-naked loose women were unnecessary and looked like a gratuitous out-of-place element. I would drop them from production. We know Scarpia is a cad without any of them exposing her breasts.)
I wholeheartedly agree with Aureliana. Glorious voices and acting but a concept looked like an attempt to find some artistic justification to do the opera on the cheap. It felt visually boring. The too simplistic attempts on symbolism were a distraction. A big disappointment in this aspect. Ms. Zimmermann did so much better in prior production. The only reasons I would recommend it (with this caveat) were genius vocal performances by Juan Diego and Natatlie.
