For casual fans, it's a great movie. Acting is good, has good action and humor. The plot is a bit thin, just try not to analyze too much.
If you're a die-hard fan, you're going to struggle with this one. Without throwing spoilers I can't support this here...but you'll know it when you see it. Some touches from long-time fans could have really helped close some gaps and made it a great movie
Special note - I saw this in the IMAX presentation, but a lot of the scenes are shot in a super-close "shaky cam" handheld style. IMAX size with that format is not a good combination.

I came to the movie a little skeptical. I just could not imagine how they were going to have a young cast play the characters without damaging the original relationships and interaction of the characters. I was wrong! They were able to make me believe they were the characters at an earlier age with the exception of Chechov. Everyone else were spot on! The young actor playing Chechov had the accent down but since he looks so different from the original actor, it was hard to believe he was Chechov.
Overall, the story line and the way they are now able to pretty much rewrite star trek from this point on was brilliant! Glad I went to see it.

I am a long time fan of everything Star Trek and this movie is a fun ride. You see the original characters come through in the new and several things hint at the older characters all through the film.
Go see it. I saw it on the IMAX screen and it is worth the extra money for the digital clarity and superb bass sound system for when the ship takes off.

JJ Abrams does a masterful job revitalizing the Trek franchise. The casting is perfect though I wasn't wild about Eric Bana's villian. There is plenty that is new and fresh while throwing in lots of goodies for the die hards. I'd go see it again readily and already can't wait for the sequel.

Star Trek is a franchise reboot, and it was just as, if not more, successful as the other recent reboots. It blended two important things that matter: Canon (Original Storyline) and special effects. Enough canon was needed to appease trekkies (like myself), and enough action and special effects were needed to be relevant in today's market. Abrams did it well. I have read many hyperbolic reviews, both good and bad, but this is a new director and new storyline. Skeptical trekkies: Don't deprive yourself of a great movie, open your mind and experience this film. Bottom line, we will not get a Star Trek movie that will appease only us, because it would fail so hard money-wise, and that's a huge factor. To everyone else: Just go and watch it.

As a long time Star Trek franchise fan, I was skeptical when hearing about another Star Trek. So when I left the theatre yesterday after having seen the new re-versioned Star Trek I was happy to say I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more from the cast and crew.
The movie may not have had the 'vision' of a peaceful future as much as the prior incarnations of Star Trek did, however, it started as an action based sci-fi flick and stayed that way throughout. Character development was integrated rather nicely and in such a fashion that it did not detract from the story flow.
It's Star Trek so the story is somewhat predictable, however, it was also very, very enjoyable.

I saw this movie twice this weekend. Once in IMAX and once in a regular theater. They looked and sounded the same to me, except I had a headache after the IMAX showing. Not worth the extra $3 to $5.

I did not think it likely that it would be true to the original. But it was...and more. They did great justice to the original characters and yet managed to add depth that enhanced the original, yet remained appropriate. This was an amazing movie. I hope this will someday transfer to a new TV series - the plot lends itself to it.

Star Trek in IMAX is the only way to go - but - there were so many holes in the storytelling - SPOILERS - young Kirk is in Iowa, drives the mustang to the edge of a large and wide cliff drop . . . IN IOWA??? Then goes into a bar and finds Uhura and other Federation crew, plus Capt Pike . . . IN IOWA??? Then on the ice planet, Kirk is chased by a couple of creatures, takes refuge in a cave . . . and finds the elder Spock in the cave . . . in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE??? (How long has he been there?) Then they walk to the nearest Federation Station (aren't they worried about the creatures coming after them again?). I went into the film expecting to enjoy it - but was sorely disappointed.

This theater was nice, but not as big as I was expecting for an Imax. They should call it a mini-Imax. Sound was fantastic though, and that's hard to get in a regular theater in this country.

Great movie overall I thought. Good story, great casting thru-out, Great special EFX, incredible AUDIO, esp. with surround channels. Nice amount of humor, not over-used thankfully. In IMAX it was truly an all-encompassing experience!! I can't Wait to see this again in MY Home Theater on Blu-Ray. Great job by JJ Abrams/Director and his writing team and everyone involved. Can't wait for the Sequel, I just hope JJ can be convinced to DIRECT that one and not just be producer on.

This movie far exceeded my expectations. Casting was exceptionally well done and the actors did a great job of bringing forward the personalities of the characters. Loved every second of the new Star Trek movie. Casting was great and viewing it in IMAX was superb! Haven't been to a movie in a long time where at the end the whole packed theater applauded!!!!! They did a great job with special effects especially when they are giving you the view of planets in outter space. Everything looked huge and was awsome to watch. The story was pretty good. I saw this movie at what I would call a mini-imax theater (avoid the 42nd street imax in Manhattan - it is teeny).
Regardless this movie rocked. I am a fan of Star Trek so for the hard core folks you may have a few very minor issues with it. Overall it really was great, though.
For non-fans - you will still love the movie as an action packed, witty, funny movie. It went by in a flash and I can still not believe that it was 2 hours long. There were no dull slow moments the whole time.
I will definitely try to see this again - at a full size Imax theater like Lincoln Center. : - )

It was a good solid movie but by introducing the time anomoly the movie changed what happened in the series and other movies. Also, it was not very plausible for all the characters to serve on the USS Enterprise "first time out" nor for a non-graduate to skip right up to Captain. Also the age difference of the characters was not enough based on the series I would have preferred for the movie to be more plausible.

The movie was really enjoyable--especially for fans of the original TV show. Save your money and take in the regular version, though. I didn't see anything special about IMAX, and will probably skip it in the future. The cost was twice what we would ordinarily pay, but it's new to our area so we thought we'd try it--not worth it.

Exceeded my expectations. Complete departure from previous Star Trek style. Great acting, terrific casting, clever script, surprisingly good transition from old characters to new. This will spawn a whole new batch of Trekkies.

This is an excellent beaming-on point for new fans. This relaunch stays true to the original while adding some new twists without changing the gender of established characters! The redesigned Enterprise and other ships are also way cool!

This Star Trek picture has something for everyone! I am a big fan, and I have been disappointed by the last few big screen adventures. JJ Abrams not only reinvents the franchise, he makes sure to keep it along the lines of the Star Trek cannon and manages to make us feel as if we are watching the original cast, only younger. The pacing of the picture was amazing...and something the originals never had...pure acting talent. The director lets the camera hang right in the actors' eyes so we can see the real emotion and tension build up. What amazing talent. The special effects are very detailed and well executed. SEE it in IMAX before it ends!!

This new "Star Trek" has me interested in the franchise like I never have been. The casting is fantastic! Can't wait to see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana back in action in the next installment. Only wish Eric Bana could come back - who knew he's such a great villain? Definately worth seeing in IMAX!
