While my husband is the true trek fan through and through, I have lived and been a part of it for his entire life. I loved this movie. It is one of the best in the franchise. I only have a few quibbles with the movie, and that would have to be the romance with Lt Uhura. It should have been nurse Chapel. Sorry. Doesn't work with Uhura. At least not if you have truly been paying attention. I too read Roger Ebert's opinion if you could call it that, and totally disagree. Go see it for yourself and be surprised. It is like a wonderful rollercoaster. And what a fun ride it was, can't wait for the next one.

This popcorn movie-movie is particularly fun if, as I, you never really liked the show(s). Especially the original. Especially if you were/are sick to death of all the TREKKKKKIES going on and on and on about all the backstories, upstories, downstories, and blahblahblah. It's a fun flick in its own right. The cast is energetic and kinda charming...and for the most part, better actors than Shatner and Co. So DON'T let your Trekkie pals tell you that you're "not really getting it" because you don't know the old details. You'll have a good time. The sfx are about a "7".

I was never a real Star Trek fan, but after this movie I think I just may become a Trekkie. It was good throughout the whole movie. I never lost interest in it at all. Action-packed. I was really hoping for a lot from this movie, after the last few TNG movies were so ehhh. I was NOT disappointed. First saw this at a regular theater and was blown away. Saw it again in IMAX and it was an entirely new experience. Highly recommend that you see it in IMAX if possible. Even if you're not a Star Trek fan, I really think you will enjoy this movie. This was one great movie experience. Period. Even if I were not of the age of Star Trek, even if I had no idea what these people were talking about - "Live long and prosper", this is still one excellent movie! I grew up watching Star Trek on TV. And watched several of its spin offs through the years. Including all of the movies. But this Star Trek movie tops any & all of those that followed the TV series. From the characters to the story line. From the beginning up to the end. There's never a moment that your not captivated. Especially if you get the opportunity to see it on IMAX!!! JJ Abrams mission was to take a tired franchise, that had many creative restraints on it due to all the shows and movies of its past, and make something fresh and new, with a bold future. And to do it without trashing the old characters in the eyes of Trekkies.
He succeeded brilliantly.
I may have a few quibbles with some character tweaks (Uhura/Spock?), but for the most part, the characters were spot on, especially Kirk and Bones.
If your a Trekkie, go see it (and keep an open mind to the new possibilities).
If your not, go see if because it's a great, traditional summer blockbuster movie.

This is the best of all of the Star Trek flicks so far. Clearly made by people who love the original series, it works on so many different levels. I am a Trekker. I grew up on cheesy morality soaked low budget TV shows. I followed TNG from beginning to end. After awhile, I got mad at Rick Berman. He was loosing touch. That was evident in the final DS9.
J.J. Abrams....Fine job. The only slow part of the movie was the title sequence. I watched it in IMAX, and will never watch a movie in a normal movie theater again. Action packed through and through. Fresh acting, but true to the franchise. The CGI was the best I've seen, even BETTER than Star Wars. My only complaint is that Captain Pike in TOS always said 'Engage' to give the order to warp speed. But I'm picky that way. ;-)

Have I gone CRAZY? Am I the only one that has noticed that every recent action movie is impossible to see?? The camera man is so close to the fighting scenes and action scenes that instead of watching a fist being thrown, I feel like I am the fist. Instead of watching the USS Enterprise fire a rocket, I feel like I am the rocket. Star Trek should portray the spacial scenes from very far out to give a sense of vastness, but instead the shots barely fit the Enterprise into picture. This is a common problem with action movies now. Please, recognize the coreography and show it to us, keep the camera still and far away enough so that our eyes can focus on the scene!!!!!!!!! Anyone else agree???

I am a huge Star Trek fan, I am a trekkie at the LEAST. This movie blew me away. I have been following the production of it since the first rumors at it completely baffled me. I tried to stay away from too many spoilers since I love to watch it all unfold in front of me.
This is probably the BEST Star Trek ever made in my eyes. You will be blown away at the special effects and acting. The introductions to all the "Main Cast" is incredible and will give you chills and tears.

I left the theater feeling 100% satisfied and totally impressed. Almost always I find a plot problem with a movie, even those movies I love. Not so with this gem. Absolutely perfect. The plot is ingenious and flings the door wide open for a brand new STAR TREK Enterprise (pun intended). As I was leaving the IMAX Theater I overheard a man say - and I think this will have an impact on this generation of movie goers - "They finally made STAR TREK cool!"

Wow!!!! I thought this movie was really great. I went to see it with my son and we both enjoyed it. I’m 59 and remember the old series and he is 26. Even thought he was not that familiar with the original crew he knew their names. The special effects were awesome and the young crew was very believable.

Saw Star Trek on IMAX on 5/11/09. Overall I thought the movie was quite good. Loved the Kirk, Spock and Scotty characters (needed more Scotty and earlier) At first thought Bones was being overly cranky as in a bad impersonation, but by the end I was laughing everytime. Could have done with out so much Chekov.
Not a compelling villain or storyline really, just needed any excuse to get these characters on the Enterprise and in danger!! All in all a good time and a promising re-boot of the franchise. I would watch all of these actors again as the beloved Trek characters, but ramp up the villainy and plot next time. Of course the original Star Trek The Motion Picture stunk and Wrath of Khan was awesome so there is hope.

Special effects and action sequences a good Star Trek movies does not make. While Star Trek movies in the past may have taken liberties with physics they at least tried to keep the story line and plot believable. This movie on the other is just an over done action movie in line with Transformers or Kung Fu films with actors preforming unbelievable stunts. Star Trek was founded on teaching a way to look at important issues, moral and ethical problems. Star Trek was never for the under educated or narrow minded masses and I deeply resent this movie going where no true Star Trek has gone before!

I haven't been to an IMAX since the late 80's in Las Vegas Ceasar's Palace for the space shuttle movie experience. So this was a treat for me to watch it in IMAX, and after seeing this movie, Im spoiled now. I will try to see every movie I can in IMAX. Star Trek, I've only watched the TV series, never got into the TNG and others. I thought the characters were great and the story was fun and and moved along well. Would of liked to see more development during Star Fleet Acadamy. But then that also takes away from time. Unless they went to 3 hours ! lol.... Bottom line though...Great Movie, Great IMAX experience.
