Given all the hype for this movie, my and my family's expectations were very high.
Well, I'm happy to say we were not disappointed in the slightest. It lives up to all the hype and more. I'm so glad we saw it opening weekend, because I would hate to have known all the best lines before seeing it. All the good lines of this movie will become part of pop culture within weeks. And the movie is likely to stand up as one of the greats in the superhero genre for a long time to come.
It's hard to know what to praise first. It was just all so good. It was one of those movies that you only want to end because you have to go pee so bad and you don't want to leave and miss a single second. :-)
Only if you extremely dislike superhero movies should you avoid seeing this. And if you only see one movie this summer (and some people can only afford that pleasure sparingly), this should be it. It's THAT good.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, well-balanced heroes, great villian
Cons too many tight shots during fights
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not just a movie, an experience!

This is the first Fathom Event I have been to, and it was well worth the money. Just the amazing surprises after the musical was over was worth the price of admission, let alone the fantastic show. I was moved to tears, and I've seen POTO several times. The camera work was SO well done, obviously by people who knew the work well. When you can see tears glistening in the eyes of the performers, you know you're watching something special.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

...and that's not necessarily bad. It's another POTC movie. If you liked the others, you'll enjoy this one too. Personally, I liked the third film more than this one. I thought that one was the ultimate pirate movie of all time. This one was more of a one-off story, rather than part of the series. But Depp was his usual perfect Captain Sparrow. He knows this character like the back of his hand. Ian McShane was wonderful casting as Blackbeard. I think he stole every scene he was in. The movie wasn't as over the top as some of the others, but it was still a fun ride. And, as usual, it left the way clear for a fifth movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

You don't have to be a fan of the movies or books to enjoy this movie. It's a great adventure movie, but also teaches some powerful lessons about being confident in yourself and doing your part to help others.
If you are a big fan of the book, you may be annoyed with some changes that were made to make the story come together faster for the movie.
Fans of the movies will like how they integrated scenes with the older siblings into the movie.
My only nitpik is they put too much of Jadis into the movie. I think seeing her once would have been enough.
That aside it was still an enjoyable afternoon and my boys, 12 and 9, couldn't stop talking about the movie the rest of the day.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie was as true to the books as a movie can be. It picked up much of the depth of each character and the undertones of the joy, pain and struggle felt by each. Dakota was great as Jane and the movie was a pleasure to watch.

Mindless fun

Disengage your brain before you go see this, and you'll have a great time.
Creative effects, and some fairly good action sequences. The acrobatics were right out of the game, and that was good. Kind of like parkour in the palace.
The plot was slim at best. The characters were just that, characters, and hard to like except for Dastan. Ben Kingsley does his best to elevate his character, but it doesn't really work.
Still, good for a matinée with the kids, which is how I saw it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Too much of a good thing

Well, first of all, let me say I love this kind of movie. It's a true summer blockbuster, and it IS great entertainment.
However, I found it wasn't as good as the original. The humor wasn't nearly as funny, and the mood of the movie was much darker. Rough language was prevalent and not really necessary, especially from the Autobots.
The effects are simply awesome, and it is amazing the level of immersion they achieve with this movie. However, there is simply TOO much. After a straight hour of action, you begin to get tired of watching the almost never-ending battle sequences.
At one point I looked at my watch, wondering how much movie was left.
Still it was a fun ride, and I'm sure I'll be renting it when it comes out.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Better than the first one

They really did up the ante on this one, it's a bigger movie all the way round. Bigger effects, bigger cast, bigger comedy.
Sure the story was predictable and just a hat stand for all the hijinx, but that's OK for this kind of movie. It's summer fun, not Oscar material.
Their are two comedic exchanges that bookend the movie between Stiller and other characters that were just priceless. And Hank Azaria nearly stole the show.
The only weak spot was Amelia Earhart. She was mostly annoying, and the "love story" element of the movie was boring and unbelievable.
A good summer flick that I'm looking forward to seeing again.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great Franchise Reboot

JJ Abrams mission was to take a tired franchise, that had many creative restraints on it due to all the shows and movies of its past, and make something fresh and new, with a bold future. And to do it without trashing the old characters in the eyes of Trekkies.
He succeeded brilliantly.
I may have a few quibbles with some character tweaks (Uhura/Spock?), but for the most part, the characters were spot on, especially Kirk and Bones.
If your a Trekkie, go see it (and keep an open mind to the new possibilities).
If your not, go see if because it's a great, traditional summer blockbuster movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best animated 3D ever!

I took my 10yo son to see this and we both loved it. I don't have much depth perception because of poor vision in one eye, and this is the first 3D system that didn't distort or discolor the movie when I had the glasses on.
The effects, even if they hadn't been in 3D, were awesome, especially the Golden Gate bridge sequence. Definitely on par with the best live-action adventure films.
While the plot and character development were a bit weak, the humor and action made up for it. There were many times I laughed out loud, even if the humor was mostly pop-culture or inane. The fact that the movie didn't take itself seriously made it a fun ride.
Overall, a very enjoyable movie, and the best animated 3D movie I've ever seen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
