Wildly entertaining and excellent character portraits. It was a nice send-off for Leonard Nimoy & would have liked to see William Shatner in a futuristic portal as well. My only qualm with the film was that there was no trail for the future Klingon race

When I heard somebody new was doing a Star Trek movie, I thought, 'Oh, no. This will be a disaster.' I wasn't even sure I wanted to see it.
I couldn't have been more wrong. It was perfectly cast, well written -- just an ingenious way to pay proper tribute to all that we know as Star Trek while providing a fresh new way to look at the whole Star Trek universe. I think Gene Roddenberry would approve.
This Star Trek 'fixes' some of the things that were wrong from the beginning -- the subordinate female characters in particular. I especially love what the writers and Ms. Saldana have done with Uhura.
I cannot wait to see where we go next.

It, after 43 years of watching Star-Trek, was nice to see a beginning. But I left feeling slightly dissapointed with a few things. One, the sound was cranked up so high it was uncomfortable. Two, the high tech ability to create lavish sets makes following some of the scenes difficult. They are so full of everything it's easy to get lost. Three, I feel there was not enough depth to the characters. Are we supposed to get the true depth of friendship that began between Captain Kirk and Spock from just the inference from time traveler Spock at the first meeting, plus the one quick battle scene? It would have been helpful the have additional depth of character. That said, would I recommend to a trekkie, yes. See again, no.

It was great. I went into it expecting exactly what I got. A movie packed with all the modern action, drama, special effects, etc. It is not a regular Trek movie, so trekers be ware. Don't set yourself up for dissapointment. Many fun and light, and yes some corney comparisons to the original series. Just gotta laugh, even when the scene use for a plug for an old phrase was too easy. It is all in fun, so take it in stride. I personally like what they did with the story, but I don't think it can go too much further. A sequel or two perhaps, but a new tv series based on this movie or story hearafter just won't pass in my opinion. But well done hollywood, once again a good outlet in entertainment enjoyment! :)

Goes nicely to the edge with gimics. Capt Pike on a 'board,' 'water' on the floor. Expect a big statement, action shifts. A whiff, not a big stinky pile of politics. Mr. Scott’s doe eyed robot is seen only a few times unlike Star Wars. Young Spock kisses Uhura in the elevator & returns to logical Spock when doors open. Transporter kissy face scene goes on too long for this Vulcan to be credible. Old Spock turns ending into a liberal PC moment telling young Spock to follow his feelings rather than logic in life. The final inevitable PC moment is Spock reading the "Space the final frontier..." lines. Unfortunately, he had to modernize it a la TNG by replacing "no man" with "no one." Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, it really was a great movie.

New cast or not-this is STAR TREK at its finest. I was concerned that they would be filming a cheesy ret-con or reboot that ignored what history has been established. What I got was a story that-in my mind-plausibly established how the core crew of the Enterprise came together, even if the relationships aren't quite the same as I remember them being.
The synergy between the actors mirrors that of the original cast, with the new crew bringing their own take to each part. The special effects work was mind-blowing. The writing held the same celebration of humanity for which STAR TREK has always been known.
I hope these gentlebeings will sign on for future voyages because I'm willing to sign on with them for the duration.

This movie was AWESOME !!!! It was action from the moment it started to the very end. I think the longest span without action might have been 10 min. but that is on the high side. The way the original crew was put together was unique and belivable. Some things hit you from left field but not to the point where they make the original series out of context. The only thing I didn't like is the way Lenord Nimoy uses the Next Generation language in the ending statement instead of the Original series language(no one as opposed to no man). I will go see it again in the theatres because it is well worth another 10 bucks.

... WERE GREAT! Despite being a tried and true trekky, I found the changes that were made to the star trek universe through this movie to be exceptionally well done. The plot changes were relevant to the political climate of the early 21st century, keeping in tradition with the old star trek. And if a shattered universe plot-line spin off show is not produced, J.J. Abrams I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND TICKLE YOU!

this was my second time watching the Trek and it was still Great. The casting is so good, everyone does a superb (two of my faves are Karl Urban as Bones and the kid that plays Chekov) unknown Chris Pine is Awesome as Kirk and so is Quintino as Spock. Plus it is great seeing Leonard Nimoy one last time. Only down side is I miss the big freaking IMAX screens, sure the picture and sound might be better but I loved watching blockbuster on the HUGE screens

I thought the time travel aspect was an ingenious way of bringing new actors to the roles of the original series and wipes the slate clean for a whole new set of movies. The interaction between Kirk, Spock, McCoy and crew is intact and far surpasses the groupings of the Next Generation, etc. Rodenberry's genius was in the characters used to tell the story. While Star Trek has always strived to be more than just a wild ride, the ride has always been there. Without that, the story wouldn't matter much. I hope this is just the first in a series of movies using these new actors who in my opinion have the potential to equal or surpass the magnetism of the original cast. Outstanding movie. And the IMAX "was" worth the extra bucks.

We could not get the tickets for the real IMAX theater near by, thus we ended up going to the IMAX movie running in the regular theater. Comparing the price to pay is OK to enjoy this entertainment movie. The characters seem to be a bit disappointing for those whom know TV series in Start trek. Looking for watching the other movies at the IMAX, too. We will go to the real IMAX theater in the next time to see the differences.

While this movie was not a true representation of the original, it was a fun campy send up. Many of the actor protrayals were over the top, but it made my husband and I laugh. And finally, Scotty had a realistic Scottish brogue. The special effects were great, and as far as IMAX goes, it was great to see this movie on this big a screen. Some of the battle scenes actually made me dizzy, that doesn't happen on the regular screen. All in all a good movie experience.

I didn't expect much going into this movie, but we saw it in IMAX, and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. I thought they did a great job - a lot of action with humor, and it all seemed to "fit" when the original characters finally came together to form the crew. Without resorting to being a movie "snob" I will agree with the following: the story is nothing new, there are no twists or turns and this particular IMAX movie lacked some of the film dazzle of others. Speaking as a Star Trek fan from the original generation I can attest it was WONDERFUL to have the opportunity to have our characters back again! And trite though the back-in-time story line may be, it provides a vehicle through which a future generation can now enjoy Star Trek with all the spectacle of today's film-making! It was fantastic, and I couldn't be more thrilled in my decision to see it at the IMAX theatre! So there!!

As long as you understand some movies are not actually FILMED in IMAX, just put into the format for showing on IMAX screens & systems, you will not be disappointed. You still get the increased resolution, digital crispness and sound, which surpass the average theater experience, even if the standard fare is "digital' or even 'THX'. The story had some flaws but the introduction of our favorite characters was plausible and definitely entertaining. The special effects were excellent and anyone complaining about this movie needs to open their minds and enjoy a great movie. After 10 movies and 4 series, it's virtually impossible to tie up all of the loose ends in a prequel so I would simly enjoy the ride. It was worth my ten bucks.

read all the complaints, but we loved it in imax. It simply got you more engaged with the whole experience of the film and we also got to choose our own seats at the Bridge which is a whole lot better than waiting in line. movie was very well paced, the perfect balance of old and new, emotional at times. how wonderful that they did NOT have william "the negotiator" shatner in the film and instead went with the much classier nimoy?

FAKE IMAX — RIPOFF
Well, sorry to rain on the lavish-review parade (character development my a**), but the story was pedestrian and meaningless, and the trick used to get Leonard Nimoy into the film is *so* tired. If you like fist-fights and explosions, this is your flick. If you like your sci-fi with meaning and message, you'll be as disappointed as I was. Mindless entertainment, reasonably pleasant way to spend two hours, but pretty far below the marker set by Gene Roddenberry.
And yes, calling it IMAX at Emeryville is an expensive bait-and-switch. It's just a somewhat bigger screen. And the sound wasn't even very good. I want the extra money I spent expecting IMAX returned.

I, like many, grew up watching Star Trek on the "little screen" - every week... faithfully! Unfortunately, the earlier ST movies never really did the TV series justice. So, when this one came out, I wasn't necessarily looking forward to it but went along with the rest of my family since they wanted to see it.
Man, was I pleasantly surprised! It was fantastic! Watching the characters emerge and take shape just put a smile on my face. JJ Abrams and the actors did an amazing job capturing the essence of each character without them just trying to imitate them.

People have bemoaned the decline of the Star Trek franchise without realizing the real appeal of the story. Granted it was set in the future, where amazing things could happen, which allow the directors of today to use wonderful special effects. That doesn't explain the failure of recent movies or TV shows. It's all about stories, the characters and the interpersonal relationships. The crew of the original series had amazing chemistry, and the best stories were well written with great character interaction. This Star Trek has that. Great actors with great personal relationships in a good story. Great special effects are gravy.

Movie was great - that's not what I'm reviewing here - what I'd like to point out is that the screen was a FAKE IMAX!!!!! "Imax experience" is a cheat (I'd use another word but profanities are not allowed) - big screen, nice image, good sound quality but not very different from a regular THX screening on a big screen...except that the ticket price is 80% more expensive!!!! Unless you know for sure the theater you'll be going to is a real IMAX theater, NOT WORTH THE HIGH PRICE TAG!!!!!! In my particular case, avoid AMC 25 on 42nd street (Time Square) in New York

Solid Star Trek film.
One need not be a Trekkie to enjoy it.
Saw this film with a friend at an IMAX theater which was sold out on a pleasant Saturday afternoon,
The whole audience got into the movie. Made it a terrific experience.
The film's characters were the younger versions of the originals (from the 1966 - 1969 series) and the film's actors got the characters right.
Made it all the more fun to watch.
The film also included a great story about James T. Kirk and an interesting story of how Bones (Dr. McCoy) got his nickname. And many other stories about the character's backgrounds too.
Go see it and don't be afraid to take your kids.

I wasn't a big Star Trek fan going into this movie, but I am a big J.J. Abrams fan and having heard so much buzz about the movie, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. I loved that they were able to give the original Spock a role that was integral to the plot and not just a cameo. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and highly recommend it to Star Trek fans and non-Star Trek fans alike.

It is much better than the "new" Star Wars (and the revised old ones). I like that it has a different plot to give opportunities for more pre/sequels. I am a devoted Trekky and I don't think this was an insult to the original, just a modern take on it done right.

I didn't expect to like the new movie. I didn't know what to expect, I don't watch trailers. But when I went to see it, I found it be very well made. The storyline is before the show, giving you a look at the characters before they have been in Starfleet too long. Spock, people have said, is too emotional, but I think he plays it right since he hasn't purged his emotions yet. The story and Vulcan could be iffy but it works itself out. I simply love the way they played with the lights and sounds, making it artistic in a way. But it is a very good movie, I have recommended 6 times and gone to see 3 times with these recommendees.
