With all the hype given this movie, I expected non-stop action. The movie failed to deliver that. The action that was there was excellent, but too little action and too much lag time. The two male stars were great and with a better story line, they would be incredible.

Ritchie turns the traditional Holmes /Watson relationship on its ear and makes his heroes the Laurel and Hardy of detective mysteries. His characterization of Holmes is one of a unshaven misfit, and Watson comes off as the reluctant friend, jealous of Holmes is so weak a character as to let Holmes continually insult him and put his life in jeopardy. It was frustrating to watch. Ritchie could have gotten more out of these seasoned actors but his ego gets in the way trying to create what seems to be a new Sherlock Homes franchise. I hope in the next installment, Homes takes a bath and shaves and Watson comes out of the closet and realizes his engagement is just overcompensation for his true feeling for SH.

Enjoyed the movie very much. Great detective film with correct reference to the original movies, ie. the address, characters, villians, etc. I love the dry humor in the movie but some people might have missed some of it. If you like Sherlock Holmes movies and good detective movies you will enjoy time one.

While Downey and Jude are good actors, I found the film a disappointing attempt to turn classic characters into caricatures for the sake of appealing to the demographic that wants high action adventure, multiple fight scenes, explosives and blood and gore. The occasional pithy dialog and deductions by Holmes were the most enjoyable part of the movie The movie was sometimes hard to follow and the revelations at the last two minutes of the movie were knock-offs of two much better period pieces "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige." I am sure there will be a sequel, but as to this one, wait for the dvd to come out.

In a full fledged glut of over the top holiday release movies one seems to have neglected to pay the editing and writing staff what they paid those in special effects!
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have great chemistry and even the many varied camera techniques are tolerable BUT you KNOW you're giving this a big PASS when you're checking your watch within the first 1/2 hour.
Save yourself or contribute to the "where are the writers and editors guild fund"!

Sherlock Holmes is an exciting, thrilling, wild ride! Robert Downey Jr. is fantastic as Sherlock Holmes, and he and Jude Law, who plays Watson have excellent chemistry. Lord Blackwood is extremely creepy! There is lots of fast-paced action and hilarious humor! I'd reccomend it to anyone!

Good action and story line, set int the times of Sherlock Holmes.
If you've read the books, it was definitely left open for a sequel.
A bit more gore than needed, but after all they were investigating an evil twisted murderer.

While Robert Downey and Jude Law gave their usual good performances, I was disappointed. You expect suspense, intriguing twists and intellectual highjinks from a Sherlock Holmes movie. Instead, this was a noisy, frentic action movie, where the Bourne-style camera antics seemed to slow down the evolution of the plot and the solving of the mystery. But the sets, costumes and stunts were excellent.

I am a huge fan of both male actors. I also love detective movies but the plot and story were a little far fetched. I could see more of RD and Jude without their shirts on, that would have given me cause to give another star. I wish the story line was better. Jude Law's love interest was boring and not very attractive. He CAN do so much better, ca'mon people!!! I love RD Jr. and think he is an amazing actor no matter what role he is in. The star quality was there, it was just missing a really good story to go along with it.

Best movie I've seen in a long time. Casting was perfect. Guy Richie now has my vote as an A+ director. He made Sherlock Holmes exciting and funny.
Set was so believable for that time period. For those who said otherwise, they don't know their history.
I was thoroughly entertained and Robert Downey, Jr. deserves an award for his acting in this movie.

I went into this movie with no expectations, and I came out very pleasantly surprised. I thought the acting was wonderful and the story, although it seemed a little far-fetched for a while, came together nicely. I had my doubts about the magic aspect, but don't let that be a deterrent. They explain it well at the end. I've heard that this version stays close to the original books, which is nice. Watson was an excellent character in this movie, as opposed to previous movies where he has been more of an idiot. I loved this movie - only gave it 4 stars because it scared my sister out of the theater (kids under 10 or 11 may be scared).

If you recall that movie from the 80s, and liked it, you will probably like this admittedly "grown up" version. All three of us who went (2 who read Conan Doyle and all of us had seen YSH) thought it reminded us of it. If you're a fan of the original material by Conan Doyle, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they got *right,* though I think a lot of folks have bought into the "Movie/Tv" version of Holmes which is *wrong* in a lot of ways. A few scenes (think: London/Slaughterhouse type scenes and boxing scenes) might be considered "violent,"but very little to cause nightmares. Chemistry between Downey Jr. and Law is rather good. NO easter egg at end of credits, so don't feel you need to stay.

I would recommend the movie, and it was entertaining to se on Christmas day, however, the movie had too many action/special effercts and fight scenes and not enough Holmes sleuthing scenes. I can forgive the change in the relationship between Holmes and Watson but not the lack of him doing and Holmes style "elementary" detecting

Much of the movie was filmed in dark spaces so it was difficult to follow detail. Same with fast-paced sequences -- not easy to follow. English accents were good, but also made things a bit difficult to understand sometimes. Other than that, the main characters (Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams were really great.

If you are looking for the typical sherlock Holmes plot story where u wonder the whole movie, how did he figure it out? u will be disappointed. Also the story has been completely twisted and modified, i like it and even the way they portrayed the relationship between Watson and Sherlock.
Instead this is a fast paced, effect-filled version... you don't feel the 2 hours at all... its never dull
Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr play wonderfully.
A must see

I thought the movie was alright. Robert and Jude worked very well together. However I think the movie could have done without the whole black magic ordeal. I would have liked to see Holmes go after someone such as Jack the Ripper. I wouldn't see this movie again.

I liked it, though there were no breathing breaks in it-I dont remember this being one of the sherlock Holmes stories though-possibly a Hollywood take from the origionals. But fun. I dont reccomend it for small children.

Great visuals, wonderful pacing, and in general just a nice light adventure film. Downey and Law gave great performances. Not sure what was "so hard to follow" about the film; my little brother seemed to keep up with it just fine. Hopefully, we'll get a sequel. Great movie.

This is a movie that could totally be a "wait for the video"- but seeing how it was Christmas Day and not alot to do...why not? It was slow to start and almost in-audible at times, mainly due to the HIGH cockney accents the actors were portraying. Once the action began,which was good, you could totally see the actors were acting to green screen and everything was computerized and filled in. A bit of a disappointment. Other reviewers have commented on the scenery, a believable Victorian-esq London. I felt again it was overly computerized, a sad fact most of the movie makers are going in light of making a profit. It's a good ride...but in the end you're just glad it's over.

There were some great action scenes, but many that didn't make much sense, so were somewhat enjoyable. Too much of it was too slow. Soundtrack was tediously monotonous, too much was too dark and the script was not up to par.
I believe that Sherlock Holmes fans will like it, but it just wasn't that great of a movie. Law and Downey give great performances and look good on screen. Rachel McAdam's part was too small and she didn't help the film in any significant way. The direction was too stilted and the scenes were cut in a very weird way. Our teenaged boys liked it, but I could use the 2 HOURS 14 minutes back.

Sherlock Holmes brings home a gritty picture of 19th Century London with a Steampunk flair. Downey Jr. does an excellent job of Holmes and his Watson was perfect. Rachel McAdams is the picture of balance for Robert Downey Jr's Holmes. The story was balanced and well paced.
See it. You'll enjoy it.

Absolutely loved the movie, I didn't predict the ending at all like I thought I had and that was a complete surprise! The characters were awesome, the acting was even better. I would definitely see it more than once
