Since Colin Farrell is not my favorite (he has one facial expression), I enjoyed the original, and usually do not believe in remakes (if the original was good, why does it need to be remade, and if the original was bad, why bother?), the best I had hoped for is "not horrible." But I thoroughly enjoyed the new Total Recall. Colin was not required to do much besides bare his chest and look confused, so he was fine. The supporting cast was good. The special effects were outstanding and nostalgic (it looked like a combination of all our favorite sci fi moves from Star Wars to Blade Runner). Even, if you saw the original, the twists were fun. It is not an Oscar nominee, but a very fun weekend movie!
While I liked this movie a lot, I would not recommend it for a general audience. It is more like an art house movie. It is very original, surprising (moreso in well-known actors acting in contrast to their usual good-guy images than twists in the story), and, with its Clockwork Orange-like ultraviolence, reminiscent of Taxi Driver. So the advertising and trailers might be misleading. It's definitely not Vin Diesel in a Trans Am!
The latest Harry Potter movie was as outstanding as its predecessors in production values. The special effects were exciting, but not overblown. The cinematography, location shots and soundtrack were wonderful. The three lead actors remain vulnerable and engaging. I did miss not seeing more of my favorite villain, Snape, though.
My only concern is that it was definitely just a transition movie (like Star Wars 2). I wonder if the flashbacks, elves appearing from nowhere, talk about the horcrux, etc would make any sense to someone who has not read the books. It is not a good stand-alone movie, like "Twilight" was.
Eclipse has more for everyone. Romance for Team Edward fans. Many shirtless scenes for Team Jacob. Lots of action for the boyfriends who were dragged along to the movies.
This is very entertaining. Twilight Fans will not be disappointed.
While Robert Downey and Jude Law gave their usual good performances, I was disappointed. You expect suspense, intriguing twists and intellectual highjinks from a Sherlock Holmes movie. Instead, this was a noisy, frentic action movie, where the Bourne-style camera antics seemed to slow down the evolution of the plot and the solving of the mystery. But the sets, costumes and stunts were excellent.
The sign of a great movie is that during the whole 2 1/2 hours, you are not tempted to look at your watch. Avatar entirely engages you in the world of Nav'i. The acting and story complement the special effects instead of being irrelevant to them. A much better film than Titanic. I hope Avatar takes the #1 grossing movie title it deserves.
Angels & Demons was thrilling, fun and made absolutely no sense. A perfect summer movie! Much more entertaining than the first one...congratulations to Tom Hank's barber on this one!
You won't be disappointed! The action and stunts are non-stop. But the personal story also has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged. This is Hugh's strongest performance yet. But he almost gets outshone by his villanous half-brother Liev Scheiber, who you'll love to hate. Oscar material...No. Great afternoon in the theater...Yes!
