This telling of Sherlock Holmes positions Robert Downey Jr. as a drug-addicted alcoholic brawler with some high-functioning autistic spectrum disorder who is called on to save the world from a satanic sorcerer in 19th century england.
The movie does require you to suspend your disbelief for a while, as well as put aside your image of Sherlock Holmes as the gentleman scholar who solves mysteries before teatime. But when you do it's a well-paced and fun movie. I loved it!

I was disappointed in this movie. It seemed to be much more about fighting and chase sequences rather than sleuthing and deducing. Honestly, if there was more of the latter, it could have been awesome because visually the movie was great. I should have known a Guy Ritchie movie just wouldn't do it - again.

Highly recommend this film if you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes escapades--Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law were perfect for their parts. I would love to see a series done and even more including the writings of Laurie R. King (Sherlock in retirement)...loved the grime and grit, quick whit and deductive reasoning. Enjoyed the absence of bad language, and deafening sound. I will definitely see it again...and again

This is a very good modern take on a classic. There are not quite enough clues to allow you to figure it out on your own. Clues are seen but not commented upon.
The characters are more complex than in the past. Robert Downey, Jr. makes for a more interesting Holmes then say Basil Rathbone. Jude Law is an interesting take on Dr. Watson. The sets and cinematography are outstanding.
I will see the sequel.

Acting is good, Jokes was funny, action was good, but story line was ok. The story seemed to take a while to get to the point. I took my nieces with me and 2 of them fell asleep. Overall the movie was good. I would recommend a friend to go see it.

At least 45 mins. of gratuitous violence should have been cut. And, summing up 2+ hrs of chaos in the last 2 mins. was just plain poor storytelling. On the plus side, liked the dark side of the character being exposed, loved the sepia tones, and luv those boys, RD, Jr and J.Law!!!!

I took my two college boys to see Sherlock Holmes and we loved it. We talked about it afterwards and decided we like just about anything with Robert Downey, Jr. My Harvard son said he had trouble understanding the dialogue sometimes, and we agreed, but we could figure out the gist of it. He also didn't think it was believable that Sherlock could fight, but other son said that after reading and rereading the books, yes, he was a fighter. All in all, it was a very pleasant and entertaining way to spend a few hours. Lastly, I love RD, Jr. The boys tell me my sentiment is shared by college-aged girls.

Really liked the movie, quick dialogue, lots of details to follow (sometimes too many, I think you'd probably have to watch it twelve times to get all the tie-ins down).

Being a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Maybe a bit over the top, but fairly true to the character portrayed in Doyle's books. Great sets and action packed when needed. Robert Downey Jr. really surprised me as he did a superb job as Sherlock. I might note that Jude Law (Dr. Watson) showed some of the indecisiveness that his character displayed in Doyle's stories and I thought he was great. Rachel McAdams played Irene Adler extremely well.
This is not one of your typical Sherlock Holmes black and white movies. If it was, it wouldn't appeal to this generation.
I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be pleased.

One must pay a lot of attention to get all the wit in this movie. Watson and Holmes are continuously involved in a verbal and sometimes physical contest. There was plenty of action and cool slo-mo effects to make good use of the awesome AMC sound systems. I loved the movie!

A fun action-packed buddy movie, but not true at all to the work of AC Doyle. The plot is not that interesting. Very good special effects, costumes, settings. Like a lot of action movies these days, it can get too frenetic, and the action is at the expense of a real plot. The Sherlock Holmes character is fun, but not as interesting as the one in the writings of AC Doyle.

Overall a good movie and I would recommend to others. However, there are a couple of negatives. One - The movie was too long - I found myself getting sleepy probably 2/3 through. Second - I really felt the casting of Irene was all wrong. Although I like Rachel McAdams in other movies - this role seemed wrong for her. As for Downey and Law - that was perfection. I believed their characters and their motivation throughout the movie. I would see it again just to catch some of the scenes I missed when I was falling asleep.

The rapport between Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr as Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes was spot on. Mark Strong played the villainous Lord Blackwood very well. He personified evil without going too far.
The action sequences were sometimes over the top, but it kept us highly entertained. It was worth the price of admission.

I've read all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works involving Sherlock Holmes. I went to this film expecting a rollicking good adventure, but one that would bear little resemblence to Doyle's classic Holmes.
Well, the writers did their homework and created a dazzling masterpiece. They captured the nuances and neurotic flavor of the eccentric Holmes and merged it with a dynamic and physically impressive film.
The original Holmes as portrayed by Doyle was in fact a physically strong competent fighter.....the movie simply revs it up a few notches.
An exciting and thrilling film in all aspects. This is a movie not to miss.

The chemistry between Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law is the perhaps the best since Redford and Newman or Glover and Gibson. The costumes and sets have an authentic look of Victorian England, the villain(s) are creepy and, most of all, the cheeky humor and wit have survived in tact. Sherlock Holmes was an eccentric nut job in the original text and remains so here. Director Guy Ritchie shows skill and considerable creative prowess in his take on the iconic figure. Sherlock Holmes is a larger than life figure and, for once, we finally have a film that celebrates him in all his glory. Do not miss this film on the big screen!

Great movie. The only problem I had is that the dialogue was sometimes hard to follow, but if you have read any of Sri Arthur Conan Doyle's books, it is true to the style. Great for the whole family.

Not the best movie you're likely to ever see, but decent. The Sherlock Holmes character is interesting, and Robert Downey Jr. does a very good job in its interpretation. The focus on Holmes' eccentricity is a bit over-the-top, but that is part of what makes Holmes...Holmes. Jude Law's Dr. Watson is, unfortunately, mostly forgettable.

Good movie. Great modern features into an old story. Lots of twists, mystery and action. They gave it a modern twist with bits of comedy and lots of action. Great special effects ( that's a tough one for video quality as most of the story is dark and dreary.. ) action packed fights and superb sound with surround. I liked it!

The verbal sparring between Holmes and Watson is sharp, smart and really funny. The bad guys are devious and evil. Rapid-fire plot twists and gripping action scenes abound. We really enjoyed this movie. Two small criticisms: it should have been edited 15 minutes shorter, and I hope the sequel has a better director than the ham-handed Guy Ritchie.
