Good Enough for the Most Discriminating Taste

This is the best movie I've seen since Star Trek -- and every bit as good! I invited 5 others to see it with me and we all thought it was great. The banter between Holmes and Watson was razor sharp and hilarious. The villain was very bad and very scary (and even HE was not the ULTIMATE bad guy!). Holmes' pre-fight step-by-step visualizations were fantastic. I hope this is the beginning of a new series of movies (likewise for the new Star Trek). I am recommending Sherlock Holmes to all my friends and acquaintances.

Downey and Law have a great rapport - doing a little of the Butch-Sundance buddy relationship...Enjoyed the fresh take on the old stories. Hope there will be another one...
Visuals were good, fell asleep during one fight sequence but was because that was the most rest i had in days. Loved the costuming...If a Southern girl can follow the dialog - please it cant be that slurred and fast!

NOT for the pretentious and / or SNOBs.
I read previous comments and was very disappointed to learn that most viewers thus far missed the major point of the movie .. its FOR FUN ONLY and great FUN it is indeed and that's ELEMENTARY my Dear Watson(s).
Fast, current, intelligent, visual beauty and simple to follow up on.
The visual choice of flirting with a video clip added another layer to Sherlock's way of thinking and looking at things, brilliant use of colors (metallic gray & blue),
One shouldn't make a holly-cow from a C.S.I meets Law & Order 1887publication.
And Watson's character as portrayed in this version makes much more sense than the mumbling buffoon presented thus far.
I had a lot of FUN and so would you.

Great action, Good casting of Downey & Law

Unfortunately the film loses energy somewhere near the middle. My son & nephew, budding filmographers, would probably say it's too long.
Although I'm a Rachel McAdams fan she does not successfully portray Sherlock's 'siren'. Perhaps an older actress might have done better. I was thinking Angelina Jolie, but I dont' think she would pair off well with Robert Downey.

This made a good splash action wise and some the special effects/suspense scenes were very good. It definitely disappoints as a Christmas Day opener.

This was a nice action/comedy. I laughed throughout the movie.. I thought the actors did a great job. The cinematography was really good. It was a little difficult to understand the language at times and seemed a little long, but not too bad. This is definitely a DVD to buy when it comes out.

Bring on the Steam Punk Baby

If you're a SH purist this movie is going to drive you crazy and I would understand and appreciate your frustration. But if you're open to just enjoying a good ride, then make haste to the theater. The production design is really great (dark, detailed, edgy Victorian) and the Robert Downey Jr subtle comedy touches delight (think Chaplin...). The Oscar-and-Felix odd couple set-up between Holmes and Watson provides the real humor. The love interest is miscast (IMHO). But who can resist a villain who's part Vampire Overlord, part Al Capone? It's fun.

Good Flick

I went into this movie with no preconceived ideas or expectations. Robert Downey Jr did an excellent job of portraying an eccentric, witty, disturbed genius, and I mean that in a good way. Jude Law was an excellent choice for Watson and they made a perfect partnership. The scenery was dark, gritty, dirty but well suited for the period and place. I usually don't care for the specific plot content of black magic but it didn't ruin the overall movie. Just not my topic of choice when it comes to movies. Just a personal preference. Great suspense, action sequences, I jumped a few times. They effects were very well done. Overall it was good and I would give this movie a B.

This film was slow to start. So slow in fact I fell asleep! The dialogue banter was clever. However, the entire movie felt like a lead up for the sequel. It was neither as funny or as action packed as the previews would lead you to believe. If you must see it, save your money and rent it.

Downey as Holmes

Whym

Downey's triumphant personality seems to overtake his characters as of late. As one of those who cheered for him as he prevailed in his personal life, there is that same sense of cockiness and arrogance on the screen that it is assumed was necessary to succeed in life. In short, if you like Downey, you'll love Holmes because, like Iron Man, Holmes became Downey... Downey did not necessarily become Holmes (as we have always known Holmes to be). But that's okay: Bale did the same thing in Batman, right?

A new twist to a classic character

It would seem that the cast had a blast making this typically action packed Guy Ritchie movie. It is assumed that we have a rudimentary backround of the classic character of the Victorian Sherlock Holmes created by Doyle. Robert Downey then shows us glimses of that Holmesian logic and deduction while literally spinning through 19th century London. It is far from the subdued Basil Rathbone, but boy is it fun...

Robert Downey Jr. does it again. He is one of the best character actors out there. While the movie seemed as if it took a little long to develop the villain and the plot, it was overall a success. The culmination seemed a little rushed when it came to identifying how the villain performed his parlor tricks but overall this was a great movie with good dialogue and witty banter.

Great interpretation

We are Sherlock Holmes' afficionados and really enjoyed the movie. Some of the reviews we had read gave cause for concern, but we came away with a great impression and enjoyed the way the story was presented. Downey was exceptionally good as Holmes and we liked his interpretation. The "hanging" scene was especially amusing and the way the ends were tied up neatly at the conclusion were all interesting and effective.

Sherlock Holmes Is a Miss!

I was really disappointed with this film. Visually it was great bit the character of Sherlock Holmes lacked any background or reason why. So that you really didnt care about him. The tempo of the film was good but it was way to long! Not even one scene with the classic hat. Everyone spoke so quickly and with such a slur it was difficult to understand key ingredients of the plot. I think our director needs to cater more to all of us and not just a few of us. I bet the folks who speak English as a second language were lost. Better luck next time Guy Richie!

My new favorite big-screen Holmes adaptation

I went into this movie not expecting much - as a fan of SH since I was very young, I have been generally disappointed by big-screen treatments of Holmes and Watson. Imagine my surprise when I encountered this version - Watson is treated as a capable, competent companion, not a bumbling buffoon. Holmes himself is also shown to pay incredible attention to detail, but his personality and obsessive nature makes it difficult for anyone to actually get along with him. While the movie does take some liberties with their characters, the core of each is still present, and any scene with them together sizzles.

Decent plot and acting, great set design. The character development was very good. You understood the characters but they didn't make you care about them so when it was action time it was more interesting rather than being on the edge of your seat. Missed the mark on that point. The plot was not predictable, so I wasn't able to guess the ending, which was nice. Acting was good overall, and the set design was spectacular. They completely recreated period London! Clearly left it open for a second film. Like I said, good entertainment.

I think some of these reviewers need to lighten up! It's a MOVIE! Geez! It's supposed to be for entertainment and that's exactly what it accomplished. Why would you expect the movie to be exactly like the Sherlock Holmes stories?? They never try to trick you into thinking it is. This movie was a creative, modern, and entertaining take on Sherlock Holmes. Our group LOVED it! Robert Downey is a fantastic, disturbed Holmes & Jude Law is his perfect anchor. It is definately worth seeing if enjoy movies, not go to movies looking for reasons to pick it apart. I also thought that the relationship between Holmes & Watson was NOT strange at all, they are like brothers, and any other interpretation is seems rather naive & immature.

The "Modern" Sherlock

I found it kind of disconcerting to see Sherlock as slovenly and lazy as he often appears, especially early in the movie. But he comes to his prodigious senses and unravels the case, tidying up numerous loose ends at the close. It was also fun to have Jude Law portray Watson as such a strong and powerful ally / partner. Intellect and action, a nice one two punch, and a very good movie

Not my kind of flick

Take it or leave it: it wasn't my choice but I went along with family. I don't prefer mysteries (don't read them either) but SH had some nice treatments of Holmes' thinking. The period London was dark and brooding, probably perfect for this genre. The family members with me seemed to like it well enough. The young men in the family liked the fact that Holmes "called his shots" in his thinking before fights. That was pretty cool. Appropriate set up for sequels but I probably won't go.

Great Movie

Well done, you had to pay attention to catch all the interactions. Creative blend of action, dialogue and flashbacks.
Just saw a marathon of Sherlock Holmes on TV and I must say Guy RItchie's interpretation is fun, innovative and well worth the time to go see it.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were well suited for their roles.

One Of The Year's Best

A very different twist on what you usually think of a Sherlock Holmes movie. This movie makes Holmes more a real person than this larger than life crime solver. He still has his keen sense of noticing all the little details and that is wha makes the moview so enjoyable.
