I went into this movie not expecting much - as a fan of SH since I was very young, I have been generally disappointed by big-screen treatments of Holmes and Watson. Imagine my surprise when I encountered this version - Watson is treated as a capable, competent companion, not a bumbling buffoon. Holmes himself is also shown to pay incredible attention to detail, but his personality and obsessive nature makes it difficult for anyone to actually get along with him. While the movie does take some liberties with their characters, the core of each is still present, and any scene with them together sizzles.
Although that's not saying much :) GI Joe is basically a loud, dumb, cartoonish action movie...which is pretty much what everyone expected from it, and as a result, it mostly succeeds. The periodically painful moments of bad CGI, acting, etc, largely wind-up laugh-out loud funny. If you go to see this, enjoy it for what it is: a noisy, ridiculous, laugh-out-loud B-movie. I wouldn't call it a good movie, but it did put a smile on my face :)
I've always been a fan of Johnny and he didn't disappoint. He managed to bring the right mix of charming and doomed to Dillinger. If I have a criticism, it's that the first half drags a little and characters are difficult to keep separate at times. On the whole a very good drama.
ROTF is a very simple film to explain. A helpful equation:
Awesomeness of scene = Robot Screen Time/Human Screen Time
Accordingly, for every minute the robots are on screen only, awesomeness approaches infinity. For every minute no robots are on screen, awesomeness approaches zero. Because seriously? Each and every screen writer responsible for the travesty of that dialogue owes me $10. Real people do not talk so frenetically and inanely!!!
