I absolutely loved everything about the movie except Rachel McAdams. She was visibly acting the whole time rather than "being" her character. A personal dislike was that she was one of the only characters without a British accent. Overall, an amazing movie that I will be buying the day it comes out.

A fun and engaging period piece with a great storyline that kept me going for over 2 hours. The dynamic between Downey, Jr. and Law as Holmes and Watson was believable and witty. Downey, Jr. convicingly played a flawed genius. A lot of attention was paid to accurately portraying mid-nineteenth century London. The case that Holmes and Watson worked was infalliable, though far-fetched; a relief from the usual. Holmes is delightfully dark and brooding. Despite the apparent seriousness of the storyline, there is a perfect amount of intelligent humor. I willingly surrendered to suspension of disbelief. I cannot review this movie for hardcore Sherlock Holmes fans, but I would definitely say that this movie is a fun diversion from the everyday.

I'm a big Downey fan and the combination of his acting chops with the subject looked promising to me. I thought he did the best he probably could do but overall the acting seemed a bit forced. Am not a big Law fan but found him somewhat believable and do like McAdams although found her poorly cast and not having enough depth and edge to be believable in possessing a brilliant criminal mind. Great art direction, cinematography, costume & editing but not much character development and seemed like the subject and story was really just a vehicle to lay on as many gratuitous action sequences as possible. Would have liked to have seen more story more finesse and more 3 dimensional characters.

As a very long time Holmes fan I found this film to be superb. Downey does an admirable job with the role and is more in appearance to the original Doyle character. The bantering between Holmes and Watson is very refreshing showing a side of the pair that is not evident in prior Holmes movies. We all knew that Watson was not a Holmes patsy! While I found a couple of spots "dragging" they did not overly affect my opinion of the film. Am anxiously awaiting the sequel.

For me, this was more like a video game than a film. Cardboard characters, endless violence, and way too much volume. Sherlock without the smarts. How can a character have an interior life when even his private thoughts are accompanied by ear-drum-damaging music? I am a fan of Downey and Law, but sorry guys, this was a disappointment.

I did not think the movie lived up to its hype. I did like the fairly accurate portrayal of London during Sherlock's times. There were some anachronisms (handcuffs in the back instead of int he front for one example). Some scenes seemed to want to shock us such as Homes being handcuffed to the bed naked. I liked the special effects and the way Sherlock analyzed how some things happened.

I love Robert Downey, but please, I'm sorry , but I watch movies and TV shows in which the actors are from England or Australia, and their charactors are american and their accents flawless. I spent more time asking my wife what Downey just said, than watching the screen. also if you are going to end the movie with a trailer for the sequel, at least show us something that would make us want to see it. Jude Law, though, was outstanding as Watson. As far as special effects, you saw them all in the trailer for the movie, and that's not good. But what should we expect from Madonna's husband. Definately a DVD movie at best.

This is worth seeing if only to renew the rich character of Sherlock Holmes. They have brought him back to life and he is fun to watch. This is sure to produce a half dozen sequels. The introduction of instant replay and preplay are great vehicles for introducing increased layers of details without boring the audience. Holmes is a complex character showing his constructive, emotional, and destructive sides.

Took my 70 year old mom (who hates the movie theatre) and 3 sons between 10 and 17. We ALL loved this movie. Lots of action and good humor. It's not the same Sherlock Holmes that my mother enjoyed years back, but she phoned again to tell me how much she LOVED that movie.

The movie was well done as far the sets and the costumes. it really gave you a sense of what London in 1800's looked like. The major fault to this movie: relied too heavily on special effects that were "sock-em bop-em" where it wasn't really necessary. I felt it detracted from the movie as a whole. The story line was a bit fragmented. I'd save you money and wait to see this one on cable or netflix.

This was a really good portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and the characters were matched well. The only con of the movie would be that at times it seamed a little drawn out, other that that the action scenes usually woke you back out of the trance that some drawn out scenes put you in. 4 stars, delete some of the drawn out scenes and it would have been a 5 star movie.....

Although I am a rabid Sherlock Holmes fan and believe the only true portrayers are Jeremy Brett or Basil Rathbone, this was an entertaining folm. The special effects were good and the all the questions got settled in the very last scene.

Sherlock Holmes was a fantastic movie and completely worth your money. A few minor liberties were taken with the characters, but overall Robert Downey Jr & Jude Law's portrayals of Holmes and Watson were brilliant, and Guy Ritchie's direction was refreshing.

As a fan of the original stories & Jeremy Brett's supreme performance in the Granada series, I thought the movie was very good. It is about the best you could expect for a mainstream, big budget Holmes movie. As a fan of Ritchie's films- this may have been his best. It's packed with suspenseful action. From the trailer, I was worried they would downplay Holmes's mental abilities in deduction, but was pleased to see there was plenty of that. I think Ritchie was right when he initially said to Downey (regarding playing Holmes,) "You're too old, mate." Also, I found the portrayal of Holmes & Watson just a bit too much like House & Wilson from Fox TV.
The film was still very enjoyable and much better than I had expected.

Guy Ritchie has one of the newest movie franchises on his hands, and he has done a great job. Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams have great chemistry throughout and you'll find yourself holding your breath in suspense at times. Overall a very fun ride and one worth seeing again.

I loved this action-packed movie. RD Jr & JL gave strong performances as close friends maintaining a quirky relationship. This was a new story, not taken from the originals. It was about a secret society attempting to take over England & then the world, overcoming death, scientific analysis of data, a smart and interesting female criminal, and Dr Moriarty is introduced. We'll buy this and see it again.

Holmes and Watson (Downey and Law) have such an amazing best-friend-through-thick-and-thin chemistry that they are a pleasure to watch - fairly true to the original books written by Conan Doyle, with some interesting new twists. There was lots of action, some of it quite thrilling. The storyline made good sense. The green-screen recreations of Victorian London were UNBELIEVABLE! EXCEPTIONAL! Costumes were exquisite. The two female characters that acted as Holmes' femme fatale and Watson's fiance were perfect. All in all, this movie is a fun, raucous thrill ride. I took my 14-year old daughter and she loved it!

A big disappointment ! Geared to the 14 to 25 year old males. Take away the special effects and the CGI BS and your left with a very mediocre flick. It's really a teen action flick in disguise. It's certainly not a mystery of any worth. Skip it and don't rent it.

I know the critics slammed this movie because the character wasn't true to the Holmes of Conan Doyle's creation and that was true however, it was still lots of fun. Personally, I like this Holmes better.
