Passionate, brilliant filmmaking. This is a truly enjoyable movie and an instant classic. For me, however, two flaws -- while the acting is uniformly top notch, I thought the lead was miscast. He didn't look he spent a lifetime growing up in the slums...his brother, who is perfectly cast, fits much better. And second, while the film purports to be realistic, the amount of English spoken in the film is not.

This movie was beautifully written, directed and executed. It is a look into another culture that is both breathtaking and appalling at the same time. From the wonderful opening to the last scene, this is an unforgettable film. It has some of the funniest moments that I have ever seen as well as the pain and survival mode tactics of the orphans of society. It also depicts the pure joy, playfulness and sense of adventure that are the characteristics of young boys. Add to that determination, character, good, evil and of course, love -in a truly realistic un-Hollywood like, contrived setting - voila- a perfect epic story!

Because this is quite a ride. I had a false expectation of what this movie would be like from the previews. It was so disturbing to me that I wish I had braced myself for the violent and tragic parts. But it was such a beautiful, touching, poignant, funny, inspirational and fascinating story that it was worth every moment of heartache. Please see this film. Having become familiar with Dev Patel in the teen BBC series Skin (where he plays a devout Muslim kid tempted by sex and booze) I was not surprised with his excellent lead performance as Jamal in this film, though two younger boys play his role early in the film. What with the Mumbai attacks in recent days, India has been in the news, but the portrayal of the slum origins of Jamal and his brother are quite startling to see. You get a tour of India in the flashback shots explaining how Jamal can answer questions on the Millionaire game show despite his lack of an education. A fascinating film, and one of the year's best.

This movie is a truly a breath of fresh air. In the manner of "The Namesake", the acting and directing was outstanding. It's a very well told story with flashbacks, raw Indian slum culture mixed in the surroundings of the "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" Indian version. The Q & A's are explained in the life of the main character. This movie has enough twists to keep the audience alert and entertained. This is a must for true movie lovers. A "BALLYWOOD" epic.
