This was the second time I saw the movie and it was just as good or maybe even more enjoyable the second time around. This is truly a hidden gem at the movies right now. A poor kid from India who goes on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' to impress his long-lost love? That's it? If you'd told me a couple days ago that I would love this movie as much as I did just based on that premise, I would have called you crazy. But this movie is so much more than the sum of its parts. Loved the movie. Facing insurmountable odds and unimagineable cruelties the hero proves that goodness matters and that life, no matter how difficult, is an incredible teacher. The scenery was amazing and the music was terrific. I especially enjoyed the dance routine at the end - stay for the credits - and fully expect it to become the next macarena.

Although this movie was good, it was not extrodinary as some reviews said. I guess I expected more since the build up was so great, ie "best picture I ever saw!" Basically its a nice love story with an insight into the countries horrid conditions. The ending makes and saves the movie!

The movie may be exceptional, but we had to leave after 45 minutes. The reviews did not prepare me for the CHILD ABUSE that permeated this movie. Maiming of children so they would bring in more money begging, electric shocking Jamal repeatedly, and constant physical assaults and cuffing incidents ruined any type of story for me. This definitely portrayed a different India than Bollywood has given us. Unless you have a very strong stomach for abuse of children, DO NOT see this movie.

I must admit that when the movie began and I saw the depiction of the slums of India, I was sure that I would not like the movie. Yet, I have to admit I really enjoyed it. It was a movie not about the horror of the slums, but the hope of children and the strength of the relationships they make despite difficult circumstances. More than anything, it is a movie about destiny. Well worth watching.

I must not have been paying attention, because I thought I was going to a Bollywood Comedy. It is anything but that! One of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. The children in the movie were spectacular actors as were the adults who played the children grown up, and of course the main character. It had some of the violence of "Midnight Express" which I had to walk out of 35 years ago, but this was doable - only a couple of scenes that were graphically hard to watch. Just a mixture of experiences that leave you worn out at the end for having seen it. But glad you did.

An engrossing trip through the slums and abject poverty of Modern India as it deals with an emerging middle class and a rising and still poor underclass.
