One of the best movies I've seen. Sean Penn "channels" Harvey Milk. His acting is phenomenal. As someone who knew Milk and lived in SF and CA during the period in the film (and worked for the No On 6 campaign) I was deeply moved by the film. It is, necessarily, a narrowing of the vision, and a hagiography of Milk, who no one would have considered to have done much more than get elected as a Gay man, which was, of course, and at the time, no small accomplishment either. Penn's performance is stunning. The film is Oscar-worthy in many ways, direction, cinematographically, acting, screenwriting. The latter is perhaps it's best achievement: it's insistant positioning of Gay people as human lives not "a lifestyle." It is a worthy and poignant biopic that comes along, like Milk, at just the right time.

This movie was great. It opened my eyes alot about the hardships that the gay community has over come. I loved how the movie tied in alot of actuial footage filmed in the 70's into the film. Finally a movie that brings out the truth about equality. If you're black, white, asian, blue eyed, green eyed, or gay - all men (and women) are created EQUAL. Terrific, sensitive, gentle, and open-hearted movie. Nominations for best movie, best original screenplay, and best actor, and best director are a shoe-in. Beautifully done. It is elegiacal and celebratory at the same time. And it is a wonderful way to book-end this year - with the passage of Prop-8 and the election of Obama with his grass roots tactics, this movie traces a lot of the origins of the themes of this year. Excellent, therapeutic movie. We were all crying for joy, for sadness and for relief that someone stood up for us way back when. This movie is a call for activists to come forward. I speak more to my own lack of activism than anyone elses and I apologize to by brothers and sisters for just coasting. I will make an effort. Thanks to all those responsible for this film.

Excellent movie - emotionally powerful and skillful acting by Sean Penn. Well done blending of news videos from the 70's and the filmed actors. I hope there will be a wider distribution of the film than at the time of its initial release since it needs to be seen by a heterosexual, as well as gay, audience.

I felt in the first half of Milk that I had my "Crash" moment. I didn't think the movie was as good as many others have written. It had its obligatory nods to the politically correct and seemed addressed to straight audiences who wanted to feel good about being liberal and then be on their way.
Too easy!
