Keeps You on the Edge of Your Seat

Nazis; occupied Holland; a downed British pilot trying to get home; a smidgeon of sex; and a surprise ending. Throw excellent acting and good photography and you have one great film. Best of all, it's a foreign film where the focus is on the nuances of characters and location. The love between a son and his father despite the fact that his father has to play get-along with the hated occupiers on their homeland. The tension of hide-and-seek between the downed pilot and his 13-year-old, supremely conifident yet childlike savior. The ending comes almost out of left field. See this film and get the kind of entertainment movies are supposed to provide!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best Movie in Months!

How long has it been since you've seen a movie that had no explosions, digital effects, etc.? Too long for me. But 'Get Low' shows that there are still fantastic actors who can carry a movie whose story line is a bid trite and whose pacing is a bit slow. Robert Duval alone is reason enough to see this movie. The man knows how to act and makes this performance one of his best. Sissy Spacek is good, and (gasp!) Bill Murray does well. Bill Cobbs is a name you might not recognize but a face you certainly will. He's got credits that go back 30+ years and he makes his part in this movie one of his best supporting performances. Sit back and be transported back to the day when Hollywood made first-rate movies all the time.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I enjoyed the acting. For maybe the fitst half of the movie, the story and the pacing held up. Then it dragged. This one falls into the category of not very good and not bad. It's fun to watch...a good mid-summer movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not worth standing in line for

Angelina Jolie is beautiful and she can act well. This poorly ditected and poorly edited knock-off of the Bourne series is a major disappointment. If you like alot of totally unbelievable digitally-created effects (yes, there are at least more believable of such effects in other movies), then you will enjoy this movie. Jolie also does a first-rate immitation of Tom Cruise's arm movements while running. The plot has interesting twists and turns, but I firgured out who the bad guy was in the first 10 min. Given the dearth of good movies lately, go to this one but don't set your expectations too high.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Disappointing

It's hard to criticize great acting like we get from Meryl Streep, but the script never gets to the point that it's gripping. Philip Seymour Hoffman has definitely done better acting in better parts. At times it felt like he was phoning it in. (I had seen Milk a week earlier, and Sean Penn is a hard actor to follow.) Amy Adams is quite good in a role that is not overly demanding. The action doesn't lag, but it hits a wall at the end. I'm not sure if this is a real-life story, but the ending seemed extremely contrived.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The story is great. The cinematography is well-done. The acting is superb. To get the ending at the beginning and still be glued to your seat is a sign of a great movie. Sean Penn deserves all the praise he has gotten. He becomes Harvey Milk in a way that is hard to believe. Oscar bound!!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
