Scrape away all of the apocalyptic trappings and you have a beautiful microcosmic story about the nature of parenthood and childhood. The father, as fathers do, expends all of his energies to protect, care for, and teach the child to be a man, and "carry the fire" for ....and here is the hope....the next generation. And, as so often happens, the father learns from the son. In the end, as so often happens, the son cares for the ailing father, and carries on with an eye toward hope. This film has a cold, colorless, dark exterior with a warm, vital, hopeful core.

If you've read and understood Cormac McCarthy's book, THE ROAD, then you will "get" this movie. All of the actors did a phenomenal job of portraying their characters. It is probably about as close to an accurate portrayal of a Post-Apocalyptic America as anyone has ever put on film. In an hour and 51 minutes this film takes you on full journey of human emotions, getting to the real marrow of what, underneath it all, it truly means to be a human being. It is a BEAUTIFUL cinematic testament to the literary work.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Why did I go to this movie? I thought it was good (it was with Viggo Mortensen and Robert Duvall for Christ sake!) but surprise... it was horrible, disgusting and... boring!!!! It was the worst film I've EVER seen. Friends out there, DON"T GO! Don't do what I did: spend my time and money. Script: the end of the world (but nothing explaining HOW, WHO, WHEN, WHERE and WHY); canibalism (would we really like to eat one another?); no hope whatsoever if something happened to all of us in a doomed planet; very disturbing sights, lack of symbolic messages and total sadness for spectators. Why did I stay till the end? Hope. I believed in hope! But there was no hope for the characters and for ME until the end of the film... only Riggo Mortis!

This is a film that will be lauded by critics, and deplored by the viewing populace.
Pros: stellar performances; visually stunning/intriguing; good fodder for discussion.
Cons: excessive narration, disjointed; slow pacing to the point of boredom.
Sum: post-apocalyptic tale of good vs bad guys - overprotective father acts more like bad guy, brought back to moral center by naive son. intended moral: there is always hope. sorry, not buying...i walked away thinking the kid got eaten.

McCarthey writes about the Texas desert and about deserts in general more or less all the time. In effect he is one-dimensional as a writer.
Vigo Morgenstern is too good looking for the role as is the 9 year old boy, not to mention Charlize Theron and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
It smacks of Hollywood marketing and melodrama and rings hollow and false as a result. As a father of a nine year old I was insulted by the forced sentimentality and contrived horrific situations. In effect, though the movie gave the book legs and actually revealed the books weaknesses.
Seeing the movie was kind of like riding through the desert on a horse with no name. That's really all McCarthey's book is ultimately- a mediocre Amercia song.

'The Road' is a dark, dreary movie. It did a good job of making the world look stark and desolate after an unexplained worldwide devastation, but what was the point? It was not entertaining, and the only lesson I learned from the story was: Don't Eat People!' There were many details that didn't fit the premise, and the people involved made too many stupid decisions. I kept asking myself 'Why are they doing that?' just before something bad would happen as a result. The fact that the young kid who was born after the 'holocaust' had higher morals than his father was hard to understand. This movie was too depressing in the light of how the world is going these days, but if you are looking for this type of movie, it was very well made.

This movie was aweful. It is a storyline that works with a book not with a movie. The much needed internal dialog that was in the book was not in the movie. It was the first movie in a long time that people actually walked out of the theater in the middle of it. I could not wait for it to end.

Stark, frightening, nearly hopeless walk through a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Not for the faint of heart. There is no sugar coating on this rendering of what it would be like a few years after the cataclysm, which makes it a great film...very brave, but I also found it almost excruciating to watch at points. Buyer beware - this is not light entertainment.

I was very skeptical about seeing this movie but my husband kept insisting. He'd read the book and was very exciting. Throughout the whole moving I was on the edge of my seat, hoping for these poor people that the good was coming. This father and son travel through the deepest despair of life trying to be the good guys. It was deeply moving and shows you that we've got it made and can only hope we never have to live through a time like that. It was moving, heartening, entertaining, suspensful, and nice to know that even in a world that hardened there are still good peolple out there. And my husband said it follows the book to a T!

This is one of those movies that made me realize that my life isn't as bad as I thought.
The world that these characters live in is pretty aweful. And I wouldn't wish their lifestyle on anyone. That said, the story grabbed me and the performances were really intense. Great cast and some fine acting in this film!
There are dark times and a few good ones as well. After seeing this flic, I value the family that I have a little more.

Promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, would be the review by Robert Frost of this sad and bleak masterpiece. The story chronicles the journey of a father and son on a mission to find a place to survive after an apocalypse. The world is depicted here in shades of gray with dying and the death dominating the drama. Yet the Morgensen as the father has a mission to keep his son alive and find a safe place or at least keep them from being taken by cannibals. Robert Duval is powerful in his short but profound scene. Unlike most films of this sort, the viewpoint is intelligent and alarming and not full of special effects.
And miles to go before I sleep.

I saw the Road twice and I can safely say it is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the story, the human element. This movie never seemed almost two hours long, It seems as tough every line that the actors utter has a purpose, and adds to the realism of the story. It has the apocalyptic theme of the 2012 but without all the explosions, all the jokes, and all of the impossible action sequences. In the Road, the civilization as we know it comes to an end. It gets cold and dark. The story revolves around the Father, trying to protect his son from the cannibals, the hunger and the cold. At all times we get a sense of the danger. His love for the son is the only reason that keeps him going.

As a fan of the novel, I was impressed with how closely the movie stuck to the book, with very little deviation. The expanded role for the Mother (Theron) added colorful dimension to the story. However, this movie, like the book, should have been an emotional knock-out. I should have left the theater feeling haunted, empty, yet hopeful. I didn't. Mortensen, as the Man, was perfectly cast and carried the movie. The weak link was the actor who played the Boy. He tried hard. He said his lines well and cried when he was supposed to. But it was unconvincing. The casting director failed here, and it did serious damage to the movie.

Def a fan of the "post apcolyptic story" but hadn't read this particular book version. Being a fan of the subject matter, Vitto Morgenson, and Charlize drove me to the movie. Nice story about Dad's devotion to his son. Vitto is intense and committed. The son got on my nerves. "Poppa?!". Please! Would have liked to have seen the catalyst for the apoloclyptic event (out their front door) but I guess this is beside the point. The last scene made the movie for me. However, not sure I would recommend it to others, but it was not a total waste of time and $12.50..

It was a close adaption from the McCarthy's novel, but like the book, this is not for everyone. If you are looking for an uplifting, feel-good holiday movie, then look elsewhere. This is bleak, grey, dreary. But then there is a small sprinkling of hope. And hope we must have, though maybe we should make sure that we take steps to avoid this apocalypsis in the first place.
Viggo Mortensen is the movie, but I so disappointed was I with Smit-McPhee. Perhaps he was selected because he looked so much like Theron (his mother), but he seemed uncomfortable. It wasn't until almost the end that he relaxed and became more believable. As I watched, I kept thinking that a better choice would have really made this movie spectacular.

Last year I read the book and when I heard they were making a movie about it I was a little skeptical. However, this film adaptation held very true to the original. Although this film is certainly not for everyone it is definitely worth seeing. You may leave the theater a little depressed but the underlying theme of a father undying love for his son is one that will make it worth while.
