Was looking forward to this movie all summer, was the first in line to see it, and found myself bored and listless during the screening. All of the elements were there: great cast, great premise, alien invasion ...but collectively they did not add up enough to deliver the entertainment value I was expecting. It's hard to say what was missing- cohesiveness? Those classic Spielberg touches? More believable CGI aliens (I was not a fan of Super 8 either)? All in all I walked away feeling the same way I used to as a kid when a much-hyped mail order collectible would finally arrive at my doorstep, and it would fall far short of the item that had been advertised- disappointed.
Def a fan of the "post apcolyptic story" but hadn't read this particular book version. Being a fan of the subject matter, Vitto Morgenson, and Charlize drove me to the movie. Nice story about Dad's devotion to his son. Vitto is intense and committed. The son got on my nerves. "Poppa?!". Please! Would have liked to have seen the catalyst for the apoloclyptic event (out their front door) but I guess this is beside the point. The last scene made the movie for me. However, not sure I would recommend it to others, but it was not a total waste of time and $12.50..
