Maintains Interest

The film starts slow, as the story develops; this provides our intro to the characters and their back story. As it continues, we are discovering "the truth", as is the ghost writer. It wasn't precisely suspenseful, as I had a good idea where it was going, early on, but it held my interest. Several moments were totally predictable.
Well-directed, good performances by the main actors, score and cinematography enhance the bleak/desolation feel of the film.
The plot hangs together, and one may take the political agenda for what it is worth - it's just a movie, folks. For those who require it, there is a car chase.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

OverTheTop - but, lacks "muchness"

I generally like Burton's films, but I do not think this is his best work. The film starts off slow (yawn) whilst setting the period, but picks up in underworld, then ends in an utterly unbelievable real world scenario.
pros - lush cinematography, colorful, engaging, great costumes, good makeup (save Depp's, which seems too phony).
cons - slow, thin storyline, little character development aside from alice and the hatter; the others are mere caricatures, performances are generally good and lean toward being over the top (deliberately), but Depp underwhelms and Hathaway is simply annoying, the 3D effects are understated, which is ok, but some are poorly rendered.
summary - for free, it was ok. for money - wait for dvd or cable.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Pleasantly Surprised

This is not a great movie, but it was certainly entertaining. The plot's a bit thin, and there are a few points that drag, but the film generally moves along and keeps you engaged.
pros: mullti-dimensional character development of the leads, humorous.
cons - morgan is frequently unintelligible and his schtick gets old, gaping holes in plot lead to common-sense incredulity (be willing to go with it, or you will be disappointed).
fave moment: opening bit, morgan is acting like various movie characters, does a line from one of the die hard movies, and deadpan Willis says he doesn't recognize it. ha!
sum - if you want a laugh, go see it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Contradiction

An interesting premise which should be riveting becomes downright boring in the second half. and predictable (c'mon, i said "3, 2, 1...and BOOM, the colonel blew up).
pros - performances, character development of the squad members.
cons - shaking camera, stereotypes of soldiers and citizens, the ending (like i said - predictable).
recommend waiting for it on cable.

Nice Try

This film is tediously long; a good half hour could have been edited out, with no loss. I had it figured out within the first half hour, but my companion did not, and found the ending to be a surprise.
the good - performances, cinematography, ending lends itself to some discussion points.
the bad - convoluted plot could be challenging for some, too long.
i recommend waiting for dvd or cable, as i think many viewers will want to be able to rewind.

Singular, indeed!

In an era where the gay minority was "invisible", we are given a first-hand look at that experience through the eyes of George, who questions whether life is worth living after losing his partner of 16 years. It's an absorbing character study. He is excluded from the lover's funeral by the family, his best friend tells him he wasted those years, and they should have been together, and many everyday things prompt bittersweet reminiscences of his lost love.
Firth's performance is stellar; Moore's is good, but she can't maintain that british accent. A solid performance by Hoult, the empathetic college student.
This is an impressive film, made more so by the fact that it is Ford's first directorial attempt.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

if you are in the mood for an action flick that is short on plot, but long on shooting, car chases, and explosions, with a few comedic moments thrown in ("royale with cheese"), then...yes, it's good.
whether it's worth your hard-earned cash is another question. i'd recommend seeing this on dvd or cable, as there isn't anything that really makes the big screen necessary.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Suspend Disbelief

If you can get past the premise that a 27 yo hottie would fall for a pudgy, unkempt, alcoholic has-been, you'll love this film. If not, you'll think it was ok. Pretty decent character study of Bad, but little development of other characters. The ending is trite. Should've ended 5 minutes earlier.
Bridges' performance is stellar. Duvall steals his scenes. Gyllenhall hits her mark. Farrell not given much to work with. Bridges and Farrell can sing. And the music is pretty good.
Beautiful scenery adds much to the tenor of the film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Entertaining, but no hat trick

The Rock, a bit short on acting chops, really plays it over the top in this one. Even so, it's a pleasant film, demonstrating character development of the tooth fairy, en route to imparting its moral. There are some laugh-out-loud moments, played for all they are worth. Overall, taken on its own terms, this is a good choice for those seeking a kid-friendly movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

So So

I started looking at my watch halfway through. Up til then, it was interesting, but it took a wrong turn and just became a drag. It's not that the subject matter was bleak; I just stopped caring about the characters - i think this had something to do with the pacing. Also, I found the plot rather predictable. The performances were good, though.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
