Defiance is an exceptionally fine movie. This intense 2hr 17 min film seems to last about 40 minutes. It flies by.
Cinematography, film score, and acting, notably Daniel Craig, but also the entire cast are Academy Award Nomination caliber.
And both the plot and theme are universal and transcending. A truly great motion picture.
Frankly, it is so good I am puzzled why both the Golden Globes and the Academy totally neglected it.
I suspect this film not only will be watched, but also grow in critical stature over the years. It is that good. Powerful is an understatement.

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Very important story to tell, ad very difficult to do in 2 hours. Acting was very good overall, and Daniel Craig was incredible. I had my doubts on casting him as a Jewish partisan, but he was so good I forgot all about that very quickly. Editing is superb. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because I was disappointed that it starts a bit late in the timeline and ends way early. Those without extensive knowledge of the Holocaust and WWII won't really grasp exactly what is going on with the local collaborators and Russian partisans, but the story is well told all the same.

This movie is a must-see, for everyone. Although it is rated R, I think it could have been rated PG-13 because the content is certainly age appropriate for 13 year olds. This movie adds another dimension to misconceptions about the Holocaust in that there was Jewish Resistance. The emotions displayed by the men upon loss of loved ones only made them more real and did not diminish their strength in any way. This movie is not just about persecution, it is about courage, family and community.

A character based movie that truly portrays the events of the German regime on the Eastern end of Europe. The level of character (and number of) deveopment has not been acheived in years on the big screen in my eyes. A great story that is not exactly well known. I would reccommend this movie to anyone who likes blend of history, drama, action, and benevolence. It also has some kick butt portions of it too, in order to keep your interest spiked!

Finally a movie in which Daniel Craig can really shine! His performance and those of his supporting cast really make "Defiance" come to life on the screen in this well-done drama. I experienced a gamut of emotions as I watched the trials of these brave people under horrendous circumstances. Although there is some violence on both sides, I could understand the brothers' motivation. Not only is this story about persecution, it is also a study in family dynamics, which only adds drama and believability to the film. This is indeed a drama. Don't go expecting 2+ hours of meaningless, nonstop action. Your brain should be engaged!

This movie held my complete attention throughout its almost 2 1/2 hour length. Every scene is well acted and produced and the story, of WWII Russian Jews fighting back against the Nazis while surviving in a forest , is riveting. I hope younger people have a chance to see this and learn of the real horrors of the Holocaust. It's not just a word, and it really did happen.

Great attention to detail, mp 40's, mg 42, panzer IIIF and Russian 71 round machine gun. Citizens hold off German advance, very nice job by Zwick, Craig and Schrieber do a nice job with "Russian" accents. How the actors walked in those shoes in the forest I will never know.

Riveting tale of finding a morally acceptable means of defying an unspeakable evil. True to life, the main characters do not always make the right choices. Every character represents another "voice" pulling the main character through the trial and tribulations of a modern day Moses. Great story of survival. Reinforces everything I have studied about the Jews and Russians during WWII. Wonderful performance by Craig.
Couple of minor flaws: 1. Vodka bottles in the 1940s did not have screw threads on the neck. 2. Zus' shotgun shell carrier had plastic to hold the shells. This was not available in the 1940s.

Wow! This is how a movie should be made. I can’t think of anything to say about “Defiance” that hasn’t already been said. Everything good that I have heard or read about this movie is true, and everything bad that I have read about it has been false. One thing that did surprise me was Daniel Craig’s acting. After walking through a couple of movies as James Bond, he has proven with this movie that he can be an extraordinary actor. Definitely worth seeing.

Until seeing Defiance, I had no idea of the story of the resistance groups in this part of Europe during WW2 and was especially moved by the fact that this is a true story. The cast members, although largely unknown by U.S. movie goers, delivered very powerful performances.
