This is a story about courage and what humans are capable of, both good and bad. My recommendation is to go without really high expectations. While I am happy that I went to see it, I expected this movie to be as captivating as Valkyrie. While Defiance was well worth my time, my expectations were a little high prior to going to see it.

This movie tells of true events. In WW2, Jewish brothers in Belorussia escape the Nazis, by taking to the nearby forests that they know well. They wind up shepherding hundreds of similar refugees that are accumulated over time. A cohesive society must be formed among these people if they are to survive. And jealousies and rebellion within the ranks must be overcome. That the story is real makes the movie all the more engrossing.

Though perhaps not a classic film, it was certainly well-written, well-directed, and well-acted. Instead of attempting to be "everything to everybody", it might have been enhanced by focusing on just one aspect of this compelling true story: history/cultural perspective, interpersonal dynamics, or the logistics of hiding more than a thousand people in a forest in Russia for several years. Regardless, it is worth seeing and certainly engendered an energetic post-viewing discussion.

This was a great movie, I would watch it again and again. Really good acting. I never realized it was a true story, it was very moving and just shows how the human spirit can survive in the worst conditions, we have nothing to complain about.

I think this movie is well worth seeing. Daniel Craig and Liev Schrieber played brothers in a way you felt for both of them. They had different ways to handle this horrible situation they were put into along with helping others but in the end family and community were what really mattered. Wonderful movie. This is one of those troubling stories that emerge out of the history of our time because most of us are not familiar with the event. Unfortunately, the story (even though vivid for the heroics that emerges) is still staid and tried. It is a rescue play replete with daring, action, violence, intrigue, romance, and issues of uncertainty. Certainly survival matters are portrayed well, adversity is compounded, and the Jewish sense of Exodus is well plotted. The problem comes in the lack of shedding any new light on the real drama of evil that hasn’t already been tried. There are solid characterizations, but it just does rise above an action-adventure flick. I think a Discovery Channel documentary might have done better.

Very interesting that we're finally getting to know some history that was pretty much unknown until now. The Jewish people have endured so much hardship over the centuries, yet still prevail. The movie was very interesting, a little slow in some places but brilliantly done. One could really feel for the people and their immense struggles and heartache.

Having been a history professor, this account of the true story stuck to the historical facts but didn't include the true suffering (too graphical) of man's inhumanity toward himself). I am astounded that in all the years I've tried to watch or read the accounts of the Holocaust that I have never heard of the Bielski Otriad - WOW - I was also glued to my seat - Intensely riveted to the screen. The acting was wonderful - the subtitles didn't bother me at all - they spoke enough English to make the reading of the screen in parts trivial.I've got to read the book. Go see it. Its wonderful!

This is a heart-wrenching account of the courage it took for Jews to remain alive during the Holocaust. I was glued to my seat and did not move for the entire 2+ hours. The acting was superb and the story-line was compelling. I believe the Jews say "always remember", but it is important for everyone to remember and to be aware of the level of absolute cruelty that is possible in man. This movie was incredible from beginning to end! The intensity of the actors was truly heartfelt. Daniel Craig and Liew Schrieber were fantastic. The storyline was powerful --- it's hard to believe it's a true story. I throroughly enjoyed it and recommend it highly!
