I saw this movie with a girlfriend (thinking my husband wouldn't be interested), and I was so surprised by how compelling it was! Kidman develops her character with her usual fine hand, Jackman shows greater depth than he has previously, and the supporting characters are strong. The setting is absolutely stunning, and the score is haunting from the beginning. I left the theater with red eyes from having cried so many tears for so long. Definitely worth the length of the film.

What's not to like? Breath taking scenery, a strong, beautiful woman from back east, a half-breed boy, and a brave cowboy to save them from a greedy cattle baron and marauding Apaches (er – I mean Japanese). Throw in John Wayne and set it in the Dakota Territory, and there you are. So what if it isn’t the sort of little art house film the critics gush over. It was fun, exiting, and captivating. It also introduced Americans to Aboriginal culture and to the Japanese raid on Darwin that Australians regard as their Pearl Harbor. Let the critics have their angst and subtitles. This is a good old fashion picture show for the rest of us, who need to escape to “once upon a time” for an evening.

Wow ... more than I expected, better than I hoped -- worth every minute of almost three hours! I was apprehensive after reading some of the critic reviews, but I am so glad I saw this film. My wife and I went to this movie. I was worried as many of the reviews I read were less than flattering. This movie was great. 2:45 long but it was wonderful. The little boy in it captures your heart and makes you smile. It is a tender love story and action film all in one. Go see it.

both my fiance and i thoroughly enjoyed this flic! like movies of the era that this movie portrayed, the good guys were good guys and the bad guys were bad guys. the heroes were heroic, and the villains villainous. i'd have sat through this one even if it were a couple hours longer. the characters were well developed, and if the aboriginal 1st person tale-teller doesn't win best supporting oscar, i'll be very surprised and i am sure that several oscars will be one by this flic.

How wonderful to sit back and enjoy an old fashioned epic filled with love, adventure, magnificent scenery. I loved every frame and Hugh Jackman is gorgeous. The camera loves him. Kidman is fine but the young Aborigginal boy steals the film. I thought they didn't make 'em like this anymore but thankfully, once in a great while, they do.

My wife and I seen this movie last night for our date night. We had seen the previews and made it a point to see it. We both thought the story was very well done and it keeps you interested all the way thru. The depiction of the Aboriginal customs and beliefs are spot on, as well as capturing the charm and humor of these native Australians. The photography was very well done and the scenery was very breath taking, even tho some area's are extremely desolate. A keeper on DVD!

I could have flown across Australia is less time than that it took to watch the movie. It was padded by at least 45 minutes, leading to the confusion that it couldnt' decide what it wanted to be -- an Aussie Western, a World War II epic, a bufoonish comedy, a celebration of Aboriginal mysticism, a feverish love story, or a warm family drama. Having said that, it reminded me of the 1950s Hollywood epics that enthralled me in my youth. For that reason, I think it was three-star entertaining.

Excellent movie! Runs a little long in some places but there is always something enjoyable to be watching; some of the transitions weren't the best, it was like one long movie and two very short ones.
Brandon Walters is amazing and I hope we get to see more of him. Hugh Jackman out smokes Daniel Craig big time (and I like Daniel Craig). Nicole Kidman is believable and has a well rounded character; definitely a go see.

Overwrought , hits you on the head w/ a sledghammer with every point it makes. Australia screams "Look at me! I am a BIG, EPIC movie! I have big stars! I am trying to wrench every emotion I can from you with a trite, predictible screenplay!"
The scenery (that which isn't obviously digitally created) is lovely, the boy and grandfather are intriguing...and almost worth price of admission to watch Jackman w/o his shirt on, but 3 hours? Are you kidding me?! Among obvious mistakes is this film's lack of editing. The movie going public is smarter than Luhrmann gives credit. Nothing subtle here....at all.

My wife and I loved this movie. I did not go into it with really high expectations because I had been reading the reviews and they were mixed. However, this is an outstanding movie on many levels. First, the acting is very good in it and the plot is very interesting. Secondly, the action sequences are very well done and, many times, will have you on the edge of your seat. Thirdly, the scenery is pretty amazing and the cinematography is awesome as well. You will see a little flavor here and there during the movie that is reminiscent of Moulin Rouge. Also, the music is A+ for this movie and very well placed. We will definitely purchase this movie when it comes out on dvd.

I was totally absorbed in this wonderful movie for nearly 3 hours! I could sense it was a great movie 5 minutes in.
It was refreshing to see a "Western-Type" movie again that was intertwined with historical events of the 20th Century. I learned new details of WWII and Australian history also.

If you LOVE old period pieces like Gone with the Wind (my all time fav) and Out of Africa -- you will LOVE this film! The scenery, the spirit, the magic of the PLACE. And BAZ! If you love authentic sentimentality and romance -- this is your film! It's beautifully shot, done, and the feeling behind it is of transcendent love, which is inclusive.. so it's about our true humanity, and understanding the biggotry of the Western Culture's dis-ease. I was amazed and bedazzled by it, as I was by Moulin Rouge. Way to go! Lovely Lovely Lovely in all respects!
