Ewen McGregor and Pierce Brosnon and Tom Wilkinson all turn in excellent performances in this dull, poorly written, oh not so subtle political anti Bush/Blair rant. The plot is weak, and frankly when Polanski tries to make the former British PM a bad guy for being too closely allied with the US it's hard for me to root against him.
Overwrought , hits you on the head w/ a sledghammer with every point it makes. Australia screams "Look at me! I am a BIG, EPIC movie! I have big stars! I am trying to wrench every emotion I can from you with a trite, predictible screenplay!"
The scenery (that which isn't obviously digitally created) is lovely, the boy and grandfather are intriguing...and almost worth price of admission to watch Jackman w/o his shirt on, but 3 hours? Are you kidding me?! Among obvious mistakes is this film's lack of editing. The movie going public is smarter than Luhrmann gives credit. Nothing subtle here....at all.
Rubbish, amateurish and another movie that could and should have been great.
