This movie was a discourse on the attitude of some of those who influence the assignment of funding of subjects for scientific study. It illustrates how those who have established themselves as leaders in fields of science can suppress discenting oppinions by denying funding and employment. This is not denying the right to study a selected topic but denying the resources necessary for carrying on the study. It is shameful that these people suppress areas of study that do not agree with their opinions. I would hope that other sources of funding would become available to fill this void. We must be aware that the study of new ideas is the foundation for the advancement of science.

Ben pulls together information that's been out there for awhile, but goes to the sources to get it. In addition he does a good job of tying together the cause and effect of a closed argument.
The premise of the movie is not Intellegent Design vs. evolution, but rather should dialog and research on these two views be openly pursued and debated. The result, he not only makes his point that these should be pursued, but that those who oppose it are against freedom itself.

I really don't agree at all with Doug, the movie kept my attention the entire time. I think it was just amazing that these Scientist and Professors when asked some of the most basic of questions, just fumbled all over their words. They really made themselves look bad! I also felt that there was a lot of underlying anger in the Scientist that believed in evolution. I felt that the movie did a great job at pointing out that we have sort of lost our moral compass because of this evolutionary belief. Everyone should go and see this movie!

I completely understand all of the hysteria surrounding this movie now. We went to see it last night and it was fantastic. Prominent athiests/darwinists were given equal conversation time. Of course, this is probably where all the concern comes from. I would be extremely upset if I supported Richard Dawkins and his God Delusion theory and I had to listen to his explanation of how the cell that they can't explain appeared on earth. In his own words, he states that he believes an alien could have created us, but it was not possible that it was a god of any kind! Don't be fooled, this wasn't a movie trying to force religion on anyone! This movie was about our eroding freedom of speech!

This movie explores the widespread censorship of ideas that's taking place in academia today. It also explores the chilling implications of the unquestioned Darwinist worldview. Stein interviews prestigious scientists and thinkers on both sides of the Darwinist/Intelligent Design divide including the well-known Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion. I would've paid the price of my ticket just to hear Stein's interview of Dawkins in the last few minutes of the movie. On top of the content itself, this film is stylish, clever, and enjoyable.

I know the topic is unpopular because it makes many people very uncomfortable. What I hope this will do is to stir up true scientific discussion and analysis on all sides. We need to admit we are human and can make good conclusions, yet any good conclusion that is worth it's weight can stand up to strong evaluation. If we cannot even allow a formal and public discussion of an idea, we need to remember that science requires these discussions in order to make advances. We need to explore every option to make sure we get true conclusions. Trying to dismiss a topic without this exchange is a death knell to the advancement of science. A real scientist cannot let his personal bias and predrawn ideas stand in the way of a true evaluation of what is being presented in this movie. Remember how unpopular the idea of the world not being flat was? That the Earth isn't the center of the universe? Those ideas came from men who found themselves very unpopular at the time. Are we going to repeat the actions of our forefathers and end up looking like the fools they did, or are we going to examine it fully in apropriate forums before it blows up in our faces? Go see it! Done in a true humorous style to help keep it from being too dry. It'll make you think... if you're willing to.

EXPELLED does a good job of raising the issue it wishes to present in an entertaining and documented fashion. Many will mistake the issue as ID versus Darwinism. That is only the presenting occasion. The issue is Academic Freedom.
For those who think this is in any way distorted, they need only go to the Fall 1983 (Vol 8 no. 1) issue of the magazine Skeptical Inquirer. That issue reported on Iowa State University Professor John W. Patterson's contention that "every professor should reserve the right to fail any student in his class. no matter what the grade record indicates" and the institution should retract "grades and possibly even degrees" based on "gross misunderstanding". This latter phrase related to belief in creationism or failure to fully endorse the Professor's understanding of biological evolution.
The question was not agreement or disagreement with the Professor's convictions on creation, evolution, or Darwin, but whether students and/or Professors who did not agree had the right to offer/take/or pass courses in a public university.

a thought -provoking look at the current state of discourse on Darwinism and ID. the movie shows the bias of the evolution (as origin of species) crowd against some well-educated and scholarly scientists who just happen to disagree with them. the Evolutionists seem unable to address the flaws in the evolution theory, and unwilling to entertain the inquiries of those who might take the investigation in another direction. this movie also shows the danger in present day academia where free speech is suppressed and honest inquiry crushed. This was a very well-made and thought-provoking movie. It goes to great lengths to explain the background behind Darwin's Origin of Man, as well as differentiate between "Creationism" and "Intelligent Design." It was simultaneously humorous and poignant. This was an extremely well done movie. I especially appreciated the reasoned dialog of David Berlinski, Stephen Meyer, Michael Egnor. P.Z. Myers, Dawkins, Scott, Shermer were just creepy while Provine appeared to be nothing less than psychotic. We took the kids (ages 12 and 14) and they loved it, too. The movie has inspired conversations about what to study in college, evil, Nazism, truth, Malthus, the holocaust, and other topics. It created a great enthusiasm for science in the kids and it deserves 5 stars for that alone.

Athieists will not like this movie. This is a great tool that followers of Christ can use to show that the ridicule we Christians are shown, has no basis. There is at least one interview near the end, where the man being interviewed cannot answer. He double-speaks. He cannot come up with an answer that is concrete. As a Christian, I understand there will be a day when our freedom to think and speak about God and Christ will be limited. This is the beginning of the telling of that story. Ben Stein, even though he is not a Christian, did a fine job of trying to get both views out there. It was respectfully done. I pray that all who see this movie will have that Spirit of Christ move in them, to see that there is more out there, there is life after death, and that life will either be Hades (I call it that because in this forum I'm not allowed to use the real name for it) or Heaven. If athiests are wrong, they are going to Hades (again, can't use the real name for it). We all need to see that there is a lot to loose, and for myself, I don't want to burn in Hades (again) because I didn't believe in Christ, His death and resurrection for my sins. None of us is good, just look at the 10 Commandments. That moral law is there to show us how to and how not to live. Why take a chance with eternity?

Darwin's famous book title in full is: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life." "Natural Selection" and "Preservation of Favoured Races" are both narrow minded, bigoted, and godless expressions. Nothing has changed. Ben Stein masterfully exposes the closed society that has become "science" in our modern academia. Nobody is allowed to question academicians concerning intelligent design, but they question everything about religion, and come to an atheistic answer, and slam the door shut. Stein reveals in a humorous (I laughed out loud several times) thought provoking (where did life originate) way the closed mind of "science." When asked point blank where life originated, the atheists in this movie give some outlandish science fiction answers. Go see it. You'll be entertained, appalled at modern academia's elitist attitude, and possibly challenged to actually think about the likelihood of intelligent design.

(1) Species certainly evolve, but did one single-celled "species" evolve to ALL others? I don't know how Ben Stein did it, but he made a documentary about a very controversial subject very thought provoking and funny at the same time! What was amazing to me was his ability to clearly allow both sides to be heard and give us as the audience the ability to draw our own conclusions. Exactly what we are asking the Darwinists to give our students and academic world the ability to do. Give us both sides, and let US use the intelligence we've been given to draw our own conclusions. The audience clapped with enthusiasm and gratefulness at the conclusion of the movie for Ben Stein's guts in exposing the harsh realities that faces anyone that questions the scientific communities complete arrogance and hatred toward ID believers. I was impressed how this movie kept moving along logically. Just when I thought to myself, "But they need to consider x to cover another logical possibility", that's exactly the path they pursued next. Never once did I find myself wishing they would get on with it (and I can be impatient!). But they were also diligent when needed, giving one person several chances to rephrase or clarify yet he stays with his very scary conclusion.

Very well produced and surprisingly funny. "Expelled" probes fairly and deeply into the origin and affects of Darwinism. All original, this is not cut and paste footage from outdated sources. I am amazed how far our country has strayed from God. To think Ben Stein had to produce a movie explaining what God wrote down many years ago.They spend countless hours and millions of dollars to prove God does not exsist. When you can convince the people that god does not exsist then you start thinking you can control the atmosphere....enter Al Gore and his pack of lies. That would be a great documentary.

Ben Stein does an great job of showing the non freedoms in the scientific community. Much like the berlin wall, Evolutionists "expelled" any and every argument and mention of "Intelligent Design." The movie interviews the experts in all sides of the of the issue. This is a must see for every freedom loving American and is extremely thought provoking.

This movie doesn't try to make you believe in Intelligent Design, it doesn't even say that ID is the answer. It just asks that the science community open it up for discussion. Ben Stein just wants scientist to have the freedom to be able to discuss this in a rational manner. The science community is open to the theory that we were "seeded" by aliens or evolved from crystals but won't even begin allow the possibility of ID discussion. How Sad.
Ben makes a great point about Eugenics as well. Darwinian evolution leads to the culling of the unfit, unhealthy & unattractive of society. It's a dirty little truth that no one wants to confess too.
I challenge everyone to go see this with an open mind. Don't make any judgments until you see it for yourself.
An absolute must see!!

Ben Stein has hit the mother-load of documentaries. It was neither for nor against the theory of Darwinism. What it did was ask why our freedom of free thinking is being suppressed. "Snaps" to Stein for bringing together both sides of an issue and letting the viewer decide. This movie belongs in all academic classrooms..wait..it won't and thatt's why he made the movie! If you believe in freedom to think..don't miss it!

Stein is not very charismatic so one has to stick with it, but the material is great and objective and needs to be considered. Obviously, Stein is a Christian, but that doesn't mean his thought patterns aren't justified. Frankly, I thought the opposition was stymied and appeared ignorant when asked certain questions. Thanks, Ben for giving us your side to consider.

Though that might be the topic of this Ben Stein documentary, we could discuss the pros and cons of Darwinism vs. Creationism/ID for the rest of history and probably not come to any reasonable conclusion. Darwinism IS a religion, and as such, has just as many zealots as it’s followers accuse other religions of having. The real issue is academic intolerance. I’m amazed that the academic community don’t recognize that they are doing the same thing they teach about the middle ages. Intolerance of those who question their opinions and motives. This was a VERY thought provoking movie. My wife didn’t think she would like it. She said she would prefer to go see something “entertaining.” Well, Ben Stein pulled it off. He created a documentary that was also entertaining, and we left the theater discussing several aspects of the movie and the points he raised. I would definitely recommend this movie to others, and will.

This is one of the best and most important films I have seen in my life. The film quality is high. It is entertaining, as well as informative. It keeps your attention, throughout the film, and makes you wonder at what you don't know (what is hidden and what is censored). The high level professionals that were expelled were interesting, but hearing direct from the evolution leaders about their end goals was astonishing. Everyone should see this film.

Boring. That's the first word that comes to mind about this movie.
If you're interested in an actual scientific debate, this is not the movie for you. If you want to buy into a conspiracy theory that the scientists of the world are somehow colluding against religious believers; well, then, this is probably your movie (but I still think you'll find it boring).
Honestly; I wonder if I could get my money back. I would gladly return any memories I have of this movie. I would probably pay to have the memories extracted. An hour and a half of this movie and all I got was dumber.
The premise is that there exists a conspiracy to suppress an allegedly legitimate scientific theory called "Intelligent Design." Do the movie makers demonstrate this by showing solid science evidence behind intelligent design and show evolutionary biologists unable to legitimately criticize it? No. Instead they focus on the (lack of) religious beliefs of some prominent biologists (Dawkins, Myers et. al). I note they did not interview Ken Miller: maybe because he is too pious and too eloquent an evolution proponent.
No doubt the most offensive aspect of this movie is its clumsy association of "Darwinism" to the holocaust. Nice. Apparently design proponents not only can't persuade scientists their arguments are legit--they have to resort to denigrating scientists to make a point. Do they think I'm too dumb to decide for myself if a hypothesis has merit?
This movie does represent a interesting approach to the scientific method. If the producers of the movie get their way, we'll no longer have to wait for legitimate scientific discourse, peer-reviewed experimental results, and verification/reproduction of experiments to guide our scientific understanding of the world. Instead, ideologues will create propaganda to influence politicians to require teaching students ideas which experts in the field vehemently disagree with. I'm particularly looking forward to a thorough revision of the Theory of Gravity (intelligent suction maybe)--physicists have been getting off too easy while biologists take all the heat. But look at the bright side: after a couple hundred years of this "new" approach to education, maybe we can have the Renaissance all over again!
Short version: invest your 1.5 hours on the internet and see if there is any real science behind intelligent design, and skip this movie.
