This is a classic Indiana Jones movie, plain and simple. Now, this could be a good or bad thing, depending on whether or not you enjoyed the previous three films, but this review assumes it's a good thing. You can see the classic style is alive and well in the cinematography and dialogue, and in keeping to the style, they tried to use as little of a recent movie innovation as possible: CG. While it eventually became necessary for them to use it, most of the movie is a refreshing throwback to action flicks past which relied on ingenuity and planning to craft their scenes, as well as involving a small modicum of true danger. CG largely eliminated most of that, and IJ4 largely eliminates most of the CG. It goes back to, more or less, the core of Indiana Jones, retains the adventurous spirit, and is a great film for the fans of Indy.

This movie fits right in with the others in the Indy series. Lots of action, lots of historical tie-ins, and the inevitable ending where good triumphs over evil once again.
.
I would rate the four movies in this order, from my most to least favorite: Last Crusade, Raiders, Crystal Skull, and Temple Of Doom .
.
Cate Blanchett as a Ukranian KGB agent was wonderful. She can play anyone and make it look easy. Harrison Ford played a believable older Jones, still full of spit and vinegar but not quite as energetic as he used to be. I enjoyed seeing Karen Allen reprise her role as Indy's spunky love interest.
.
One has to suspend belief through 99% of this movie, not only regarding the supernatural power (and origin) of the skull, but in seeing people dodge machine gun fire, get run over, and plummet over waterfalls with nary a scratch. But that's what an Indiana Jones movie is all about -- a revival of, and nod to, the Movie Serial genre.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a fun movie for everyone. I still get a chill when they show the shadow of Indy putting on his fedora and the famous music builds in the backround. The story is decent, but the special effects are great. Lots of tongue in cheek humor, especially for those who are fans of the previous three. Although very predictable, which it has to be, it is a great afternoon of entertainment.

The saga continues but it felt a little tiring at times. I imagine that it hards to pick up on a character after 18 years since we last saw him in action(especially during a period in history that encumpassed WWII and not want some filler to bring us up to speed). Well, that's what parts of the movie felt like, filler. They should have done a starwars introduction to bring the audeince up to speed. O.k maybe a little too far out there, but too much of the movie was about the life of Indian Jones instead of the movie. Not that he's not an interesting character, but it felt like a memoir instead of Indy blazing new trails.
Now for what worked for me. When the movie had Indy in action it was like a master painting a master piece. Working over three ambres at the same, priceless. Indy knows how to throw a punch. I wouldn't be suprised to find out he was a boxing champ back in his days in college.
The villian worked for me as well. Very intrigeing. The fact that Indy found his true love can be seen as a bonus also.
All in all it barely lived up to the rest of the Jone's movies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The movie was what i expected, over the top action...lot's of special effects, and Harrison Ford making Indiana as fun as ever.
However, the story was by George Lucas...and as usual, kind of all over the place...and did not seem to fit within an Indy story...
I really liked the plot between the characters themselve...and it was really nice to see Karen Allen back.
Overall, ok...but don;t have high expectations.

Overall I must say it was a good movie. Having said that, there were a few things I didn't like. The biggest one was Shia LaBeouf's acting. I don't know if it was the script he was given or he was trying too hard but I cringed for the first 30 mins or so whenever he spoke. It was terrible. Luckily, as the movie progressed, it got much better. What kept me from going from Good to Excellent was the last 30-45 mins. It reeeeaaallly strayed from what we've come to expect from an Indiana Jones movie. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing will vary from person to person.

When you think of Indiana Jones you think of superb action sequences, thick developed plot lines, great character development and etc.
After waiting years and years and years for this movie, I cannot begin to describe my dissapointment for this movie.
First of all, I grew up watching the Indiana Jones Trilogy... and Harrison For is one of my all-time favorite actors... so I supposed that is a lot to live up to in itself.
The first bit of the movie was slightly slow, like all the Indy films... to set the plot and set up the rest of the movie... Shia was a lame character and will hopefully not continue the Indiana Jones legacy. The action sequence... basically the one good action sequence... was far too long and highly predictable. how many times can you jump here and jump there and still survive? i mean really.
The ending... made me want to walk out of the theater and call/write the directors/actors and ask them why? Why did they get my hopes up for such an amazing movie... and then let me down with such a bad predictable and far-fetched movie. If Will Smith would have popped up in the ending to fight the bad guys like he did in Men In Black and Independence Day it would have made more sense than having our Indiana be there.
It pains me to say this... but wait for the dvd. wait for blockbuster. wait for netflix. Maybe I just thought too much and looked forward to this movie too much.. but i was completely let down.

I went in to the movie expecting much more. I felt like the story was thrown together from left field and although it did contain alot of Indy classic moments and examples the movies story was a total let down. There were too many cgi scenes and just too many campy and unrealistic action scenes. The film over all just had nothing that really moved me. The thing just kind of drug me from scene to scene over half of which I personally feel were stolen from National Treasure 1 and 2. Anyone who has seen those movies will understand what I mean after seeing this. I almost thought at times that this was an alternate script for National Treasure. Rushed relationships, unbelievable sequences, poor locations, lacking of a good developing story, among many other things are all reasons why I feel this movie was an incredible letdown. It almost stole a piece of my childhood memory away by turning a great franchise into trash. Next time dont throw back up someone elses movies in a patchwork quilt, be the innovator and predecessor you should be and raise the bar yet again to give other films something to follow, not the other way around. Viewers save your 15 dollars and wait for this one to come out on netflix.

First, I'll admit right off the bat that I'm a fanboy: I grew up with Indy, read the novels, the comics, played the PC games, and watched Young Indiana Jones on ABC religiously.
When I first heard they were making another Indy movie, sure I was excited, but also did not keep my expectations too high because I knew there was no way it would live up to Raiders, but expected it to be on par with Doom or Crusade.
What I got was sub-par...WAY sub-par.
I don't want to spoil the "plot" (and I use that term loosely), but it seems Lucas & Co. were backed in a corner and under pressure to make another Indy movie before they (specifically Ford) got too old.
And the results show: plot inconsistent with the Indy universe, poor special effects (did ILM interns do the effects?), poor musical score (John Williams! What happened?!?), and half baked acting (I'm not going to name names, but a few actors/actresses seemed to have slept walked through filming).
Not only do Indy fans deserve better, but the movie going audience of this day & age deserve better too.
Shame on you Lucasfilm!!!

I agreed with the one who said it was good but not great. I agree. I think the storyline was very strong, but I didn't really like the way it ended. I've seen all the Indy movies on opening day as well (btw, it has been 19 years since 1989 when the last one came out that May), and this one I got to take my own kids. Could Harrison Ford still sucessfully play Indiana Jones 19 years later? Yes he can!
He showed the same humor and charisma that made the other films great. Spielberg and Lucas put together a phenominal movie. Without giving away any plot details, I did think the ending was somewhat far fetched and difficult to accept as any sort of reality. However, the movie was exciting and it was wonderful to see Indiana Jones back in action again. Shia LaBeouf was surprisingly solid - and held his own in the cast of experienced actors.
Despite what some of the critics have said, the full theatre broke into applause at the end of the showing I attended. Welcome back Indiana!

I went on opening day with my family. We all were really looking forward to the release and the anticipation did not leave us disappointed. I thought that the action was true Indiana Jones fashion and really great fun. The movie brought back old friends and gave us some new ones. Wasn't more that I could ask for. The interplay between Indy and Mutt is really fun but between Indy and Marion was cute but kind of corny. I wanted to smack him and tell him to quit getting caught up in the moment because he kept helping the bad guys, maybe it was an old guy moment. The plot pretty much sets things up for future movies, I think Shia LeBeouf will make a great successor for Indiana. It was really a lot of fun and I can't wait to see it again.

It truly does feel similar to the original trilogy.
They really did stick to using miniatures and models. The only "new" thing is that traditional special effects animation technique is replaced with CGI.

My husband and I saw the last Indiana Jones movie (#3) when we were first married. The first three movies were spell-binding from beginning to end, so we had very high expectations for this one. We were NOT disappointed!!! #4 is just as exciting as the first 3!! It was so good that we immediately bought our tickets to see it again today!! This time, we had our 11-year-old daughter with us. She did not want to leave the theater! THANK-YOU, STEPHEN SPIELBERG AND GEORGE LUCAS!!!!!! —> Hope that we don't have to wait 18 years for #5!!!!

I feel Lucas and Co. didn't really care about the critical acclaim/salutations and just wanted to do a picture they enjoyed. Set in the late 50's, it would of been up their alley during their youth. While it doesn't come close to 'Raiders' or 'Last Crusade', its still a fun flick to go see. Its based less historically and more into what was going on in culture at the time (James Dean, 50's science fiction, and the Cold War). The more about the 50's you know, the more enjoyable you'll find the picture.

Hi everyone,
I am a huge fan of the George Lucas classics, including the Indiana Jones trilogy. However, like the Star Wars series, great movie makers shouldn't diminish the glory of a great series with sub-par new additioins. Not only is it disappointing to the hardcore fans, but it makes new viewers have a lessor oppinion of the series in general.
Such is the case of Indiana Jones. "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is like a mediocre remake of "The Mummy II", which wasn't a very good movie to begin with. Considering the Indiana Jones series is one of the most highly regarded action movie trilogies in movie-making history, one would think that Speilberg and Lucas would have had enough respect for it to only add a new movie that was at the same caliber, or higher, than the previous three. It is disgraceful on their part.
As for the new movie itself, the graphics are cheesy (particularly the monkeys and prairiedogs, which detract from the movie). I think that actors cast are capable of great perfomances, but not with this script and plot. In "Raiders..." Marion is quirky and funny; but in this new movie her character is a sappy ditz. I like some of the ideas presented, like the crystal skulls, the Rusians, and adding Marion back into the story, but everything is so poorly executed.
The dialog doesn't flow; it is boring and lacking in the customary Indiana Jones wit. The plot moves to fast and just glosses over important elements of the story. It was jam packed with cliches and events that were ripped-off from other movies ("The Mummy" and "Tarzan" come to mind).
While previous Indi movies had crazy things happen, those movies were so well done that you believed that with luck, Indi could do anything. The plot and events in this new movie, however, are so poorly done that the events are simply unbelievable and, thus, unenjoyable (you will know what I mean when you see, for instance, the Tarzan scene; ridiculous). The ending too is filled with many events, yet leaves you unsatisfied.
To be fair, I think some young viewers who have no history with the Indiana Jones series, and aren't expecting anything, might like it as just a family action movie. However, anyone who has seen and loved a previous Indi movie will likely be quite disappointed. Don't waste your money seeing it in the theater. And if your a big fan, and want to preserve your respect for the Indiana Jones series, don't see "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" at all. At least Lucas has run out of good series to screw-up.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Crystal skull doesn't have the "edge of your seat" opening of the first film; it isn't as dark and gloomy as the second; it's not as funny and charming as the third film. That said, it is still a good movie and any fan of the series will enjoy themselves. I wish more time was spent on re-building the relationship between Jones and Marion. The plot is predictable but is that really why we watch? No, we want to see crazy people doing impossible things .... and having fun doing it!

What a disappointment!!! We have been Indy fans for years and years and REALLY looked forward to this movie.

The cast and story are totally in line with what any Indy fan would expect--FUN! Almost 2 decades of movies since the last one means a lot of expectations by movie goers. Crystal Skull meets most of the expectations but fell short in one or two areas. If you insist on perfectly produced movies this isn't the peak of the Spielberg or Lucas films productions. The soundtrack had some weaknesses and the backgrounds were occasionally disappointing. The traditional theme, story line, and acting far outweighed any technical glitches. For the perfectionists not sure the movie will do well on an HD DVD ; for those of who love the Indy series, the continuing story line, theme music and core cast provides a definite welcome back. The avid fan will leave with, so when's the next logical step in the story line coming out?

Best Indy movie since Raiders. Or maybe since The Last Crusade. Whichever, this one is right up there with good tongue-in-cheek, wink-wink humor. Spielberg uses the film as a tribute to the childhood of boomers (Howdy Doody on the TV, up close and personal at a nuclear testing site, Roswell, I Like Ike, etc.) with his usual deft touch. While today's kids won't get the 1950's-era pop culture references, this flick is fun enough and just intentionally corny enough for everyone who loves Indy to enjoy. What's not to love? Oh, by the way, Harrison Ford still looks awesome. Take heart all you boomer men!
