Ads kept saying "classic Eastwood"; sort of but better. Longtime Eastwood fans will immediately relate while realizing the movie has both entertainment and message. It's been quite awhile since I've seen an audience sit hushed and reverent at the end of a movie. I saw many similarities to things I grew up with as my father was of the WWII/Korean war generation portrayed. Having said that, the movie very powerfully reminds the viewer that we can choose how we respond to people. The power of an individual committing to right wrongs should never be forgotten--this film will make you think about it for some time. Eastwood continues to demonstrate his talents as a giant across the entire movie production.
The cast and story are totally in line with what any Indy fan would expect--FUN! Almost 2 decades of movies since the last one means a lot of expectations by movie goers. Crystal Skull meets most of the expectations but fell short in one or two areas. If you insist on perfectly produced movies this isn't the peak of the Spielberg or Lucas films productions. The soundtrack had some weaknesses and the backgrounds were occasionally disappointing. The traditional theme, story line, and acting far outweighed any technical glitches. For the perfectionists not sure the movie will do well on an HD DVD ; for those of who love the Indy series, the continuing story line, theme music and core cast provides a definite welcome back. The avid fan will leave with, so when's the next logical step in the story line coming out?
Going in I was skeptical as I expected it would be confusing or a copycat of Babel's approach to a story. Turns out it's not a Babel copycat like all of the Matrix special affect repeats. My teen daughter pleaded with my wife to go see it so she could talk about how much she loved it. In places it was not totally even on each vantage point. detail or energy but that's minor and probably more realistic. Some nonstop action movies get boring with the repetition but this one built the clues so carefully it was almost like watching an Agatha Cristy mystery unfold. I couldn't wait for the next tidbit of information. You have to like action and mysteries to appreciate the repetition of the chase scenes so it won't appeal to all audiences but should be very satisfying to those who like the genre. The unraveling of the "real story" was well supported by the chosen format. Despite the repetition via the vantage points, I never once felt the movie reached a lull and was stunned at the feeling the movie was a fast paced film that felt much shorter than it was--that's a well built suspense. We can't wait to add it to our DVD collection even though the whole family has seen it.
