I was quite pleased with the adaptation of Speed Racer for the big screen. Having watched more than my share of the animated cartoon, I believe they did a very good job in bringing the story up to "speed" and give the background on Speed's older brother, Racer X and the WRL. Additionally, the over the top antics of his little brother were a welcome surprise. Bravo to the Wachowski Brothers for bringing this to us but keeping it close to the original. My kids, ages 13, 11 and 8, stayed glued to their seats and my 2 year old was actively engaged.

My 10-year-old son loved this movie. When we first sat down to watch my husband and I immediately knew there was going to be a corniness to it. He was disappointed because he was looking forward to a true live-action version of the movie and this was more of a comic book version. But once you accept that is what you are going to see, the movie is good. The storyline is good. Overall it is a fun movie.

we took our gran kids (8, 9, 16, 17) with us and we all were surprised to really like the movie. The graphics were great - was 2 1/4 hrs long but went by really fast

I admit it. I was too old to have been watching Speed Racer when it was broadcast in Dallas, Texas back in 1970. Japanese animation had this indefinable allure, an intangible, surreal, weirdness factor that made Speed Racer and Tobor the Eighth Man irresistable. All my friends watched them. Some even named their '80s garage band Speed Racer. Of course, I HAD to see this trans-cultural oddity translated to a major Hollywood blockbuster whose budget surely eclipsed the money spent producing the entire run of the original show. The very idea that anybody would do this in the first place has a curious psychological twist that's akin to the underlying inspiration of Tim Burton's decision to do the same fror a pack of obscure bubblegum cards when creating Mars Attacks. If your interest in this film is along these lines, I think you will enjoy the experience. The casting is perfect. the manipulation of the motion picture media is amazingly plastic, played with in a zealous abandon that matches the zaniness of the original show. The races are correctly incomprehensible in scope and purpose. There are plenty insider details to revive the dumbfounded joy of watching the cartoon. My only regret, was the length of the film. Because the races are intentionally senseless, there's little gained by extending them too much, and I found myself squirming in my seat during the last half hour. My initial anticipation turned to regret when the beginning of the film took a detour from a roller coaster send-off, into flash backs of young Speed living, eating, dreaming and breathing his racing aspirations way past us "getting it" and wanting to move on from there. Still, my 13 and 16 year old daughters enjoyed it. I prepped them by explaining that this was the first migration of Japanese Anime to our shores. I showed them some clips on You Tube to set their taste buds for the inscruitable strangeness of the original, and they 'go it'. Overall, we found Speed Racer to be a very tasty experience.

Speed Racer entranced my eight year old son with outstanding action and great use of color. This movie was fairly family friendly as i also took my parents who are in their fifties but could have done without the cursing as it didn't fit the general motif of the movie. Generally the good versus evil theme was well played and my son enjoyed the side story of racer X as well. The after affect of the movie was my son coming home drawing pictures of the car and the racetrack and explaining he wants to build his own car some day.

i'm usually not one to critique movies, but this is one i really want to comment. i'm normally optimistic about flicks but i watched this in imax and left after 30 min. i really couldn't take in the story of the movie because i was so caught up in the "fakeness" of the graphics and human/animation integration, full animation would've probably made it better. cinematography did not suit my taste at all. definitely a "wait for dvd" movie.

I saw Speed Racer with my wife and 10 year old son this week and was taken from the opening strains of the original TV show's theme music. Nostalgia crept up my spine, remembering the show as I watched it in my parent's living room, now come to life on the big screen. The over-the-top graphics and way-too-intense dialog was nicely balanced by the seriousness of the actor's interplay, the dynamic of father/son and brother/brother adding a sincerity and meaningful drive to the cartoon quality. This cartoon quality was intentional, drawing it's inspiration from the original and amplifying it sevenfold; cotton-candy effects, reminiscent of Spykids but not quite as eerie, provide an intensity the Wachowskis are well known for from the Matrix series. Where the Matrix used effects tp achieve a techno-gothic intensity, Speed Racer's neon bright glow duplicates the anime theme of the original cartoon perfectly.

This movie was really poorly done. The racing sequences were totally unbelieveable. It was all skidding - constantly. It looked more like motocross racing. The race tracks were like wide elevated Hot Wheels tracks. There was very little road racing. Nothing looked at all realistic. I mean, come on, you've got to make it somewhat believeable. The cars looked cool, but that's about it. The action was too "in your face". Way over done. The Mach 5 looked great, but had a very small part in the film. What's up with that? I was a big fan of the cartoon as a child. The Mach 5 - WAS the show. The whole movie should have centered around the Mach 5, not the Mach 6! Save the Mach 6 for the 3rd sequel. I doubt this film will have any sequels at all. For years I wished that someone would make a live action movie of Speed Racer. They blew it. I'm very disappointed. This was not "Speed Racer". My 10 year old son did like it a lot - go figure. Not for adults that grew up with the cartoon though. The story itself (particularly "Racer-X") was pretty true to the cartoon, but I would definately not recomend this film.

What too many critics and theatre lovers often seem to forget is why we go to the movies in the first place. We go to the movies to be entertained - especially in the summer. This is not to say that there is not room for hight culture arts films or thought provoking dramas, as much as it is to say that there is also room for fun action fare and comedy as well. In other words, room for popcorm movies.
Speed Racer is the quinessential popcorn movie - fun from beginning to end. Go in, sit down, and pardon the pun, buckle up and enjoy the ride. It was not supposed to be Voltaire, it was based on a cartoon. It was supposed to be fun and entertaining. Both my fiance and I really enjoyed the film - so much so that she looked at me and said we will need to get this one on DVD.
Yes in places the movie was predictable but most folks could see that coming - but still the movie was exciting and did keep you on the edge of your seat and I was not disappointed when I walked out of the theater. And that is all one can really ask for - was the movie worth my $8.50 and my time - and in the case of Speed Racer - the answer was a resounding yes.

This movie is so confusing I don't see how anyone could enjoy it. I took my 14, 9 & 4 year old to see the file with some friends. In the first 20 minutes of the movie there are so many flash backs, flash forwards and flash sideways I thought we were going to see 4 poker buddies rob a bank.
In the middle the movie is really long and boring but picks up by the end. Definitely not worth the wait.

First of all, i wasn't expecting great things from this movie. The trailer that I saw wasn't at all impressive or a good representation of the movie. It was incredible. They brought you into a whole other world that was creative and jaw-dropping. The race sequences were amazing and the story was really well done. And, I really appreciated the lengths they went to making it as true to the cartoon as possible and expanding on it. It's a shame that it tanked at the box office. They should totally re-release this movie in 3D!

My husband and I really enjoyed this movie. I was worried this would end up being a "teen scene" kind of movie, but I ended up really liking it. It was clean, they didn't overdo the "Go Speed Racer" we all remember. In fact, they didn't do enough of it. That car was just awesome!!!! Besides, who could pass up on a chance to see Matthew Fox??? :) He was great!

From start to finish - awesome. Great story, Very Artistic...Like a comic book coming to life. Great movie to share with kids....action, story , great lessons to be learned. If you were a fan of the cartoon series, you will LOVE this movie! While the movie is totally scripted (Duh, as if the cartoon wasn't), the live action coupled with the signature moves and sayings of the characters makes it an awesome mix of nostalgia for us "fogies" and fun for the "newbies". I would definitely see it again AND buy the DVD.

When I first sat down to watch it. I kinda had trouble with the graphics, but once you notice how things are moving it is awesome how the incorporated the animation with actual live characters. I would see this movie again because it is a great movie.

This movie bought me back to my childhood, watching Speed Racer after school. This interpretation is a wonderful reinvention of a classic. I would have given it 5 stars, except at times I thought the visuals were a little too chaotic, though stunning none the less. Go see it. Go, Speed Racer, Go!

The first hour was extremely confusing with flashbacks, flash-forwards and "blending" of past and present; once I got used to the graphic mix with real life it took awhile to figure out who was where, when and what. Also, that first hour or a little more was excruciating for my 6 1/2 yr old boy to sit through, way too much dialogue scenes for an Action movie. But aside from this, the music, scenes and storyline were right on with the Speed Racer I grew up with. I'd recommend young children and adults who require alot of action to wait for the DVD.

Scenes moved to fast to follow. Too many flashbacks and overdone. I've watched every episode of Speed Racer and reruns growing up, but this was a bit much. Wait for it on DVD and rent it when you have nothing better to do.

I really did not go with any high hopes for this movie. I love the old speed racer where he speaks and his mouth does not move - timeless. So to have read some of the reviews - such as one I read where it said that the movie could not make up it's mind whether to be a cartoon or a realistic portraysl (if you will) of Speed Racer - I really went with no expectations except my daughter wanted to see it. The graphics are amazing. I totally loved it. However, that being said, I love Mario Kart too - and if you took Mario Kart up a few levels you would have Speed Racer (the movie) - so - did I like it. Yes. Would I recommend it - of course. Now I am waiting for the Speed Racer game to come out :)

Having grown up with the original Speed Racer Cartoons this film was mostly true to the original. Overall we enjoyed the film and appreciated the special effects it took to make the action of the film as true to the original as possible. However there would not have been swearing G-d D--- by one of the characters and Speed's little brother would not have given someone "the finger" in the original cartoon. These "touches" were superfluous and not needed to carry the story such as it was. I would have rated the movie higher if it did not have the unnecessary obscenities.

I sat through this movie thinking I was going see a live action flick. Now I will say that the film did have color. I liked the storyline, but this is a movie that probably should have gone to straight to DVD. A good movie to watch at home on a big screen television, but a waste of money at the theatre.

I found this movie very fun but also moving because it stayed so faithful to the original cartoon. I really don't understand why critics have given such bad reviews. I guess critics are depressed intellectuals who only like movies so sad they make you feel suicidal. Speed Racer is a great family movie and if it were not for the fact that many people watched the cartoon it would not be predictable. I like that Speed Racer is not the typical story of a superhero that gets superpowers by magic or technology. Speed Racer fights corruption doing what he loves which is racing. Definitely go watch this movie!

Very fun movie! I really enjoyed it. Funny, eye-catching, surprisingly good acting, and jaw-dropping races. Any gearhead owes it to himself to see it for that alone. I think most people who review this movie poorly are forgetting a key fact - it's a KIDS' movie based on a KIDS' CARTOON! This movie has really captured the spirit of the show, which means it's fun, impish, and flashy. You can't go to this type of movie and expect any dramatic milestones. Yes, it has parts that overly silly and goofy, and some people obviously feel that they're too good for that. But is also has heart. At its core, Speed Racer is idealistic, innocent, and sentimental, and the viewer has to be willing to shed the jaded eyes of an adult movie-goer and immerse themselves in a world that's not quite real. To anyone on the fence about this movie: if you can just kick back, relax, and enjoy a good popcorn flick for what it is, then I highly suggest seeing Speed Racer. It's fun, and you feel good afterwards.

I took my neice and nephew to see this film, I thought it was a little long for them but we all enjoyed the film, I love the f/x and graphics of the film. I watched the cartoon as a kid and I enjoyed how they kept the whole Anime theme going.
