This movie lacked "something" big time. In spite of Julia Roberts, the story did not make sense. I spent half my time trying to understand what the Italians, etc. were saying. This does not make for enjoyment when you can't understand the accents. I did enjoy Neil Young's Heart of Gold and Harvest Moon!!!
That made the movie palatable. As many movies as Julia has made, she and Brad Pitt should have made it understandable!

I had heard negative reviews so I went in with low expectations but I ended up enjoying the movie. I think it was a realistic portrayal of a women trying to find herself. If only everyone could travel the world for such an experience. Julia did a great job showing a range of emotions and making me believe she was really searching for answers. I haven't read the book yet but it is now on my list for the near future.

I don't really like Julia Roberts, so I wasn't excited to see this movie. I found, however, that I did enjoy her character in Rome. I hated the whole India part of the movie. I've never been there and don't think I want to go there after watching the movie. I think her journey there, at least in the movie (didn't read the book) was pointless! Bali was beautiful and Javier, sexy! Julia's character did seem a bit dimwitted, to me, because she didn't know what to do until the medicine man told her what to do, and the movie was typically Hollywood preachy with Julia telling us what she learned in life-gag me! If you don't think too hard and go just for entertainment value, it's worth it.

I went to see this movie with four other ladies- most of which had read the book. Julia Roberts is as great as ever. This is a thinking movie-it is one that you have to pay attention too in order to appreciate the story. Although a little too long- it allowed me to digest all that was happening and make some conclusions. My friends told me that the book had more in depth to it and so my next book pruchase will be EAT PRAY LOVE.

The very, very long journey of a ridiculous woman. This film was at least an hour longer than it should have been as we watch an unlikable shrew leave love to find, well love. Implausible, much of which was clearly shot in a soundstage whilst trying to cover up the fact that Julia Roberts is pregnant in real life which might explain why there is absolutely no chemistry between her and Javier Badem. I asked myself how bad could it be? Worse than that. No wonder it took so many years to come to the screen. Anne Coates couldnt have saved this movie but someone should have tried. One very great line, JULIA to future ex husband, "pick a dream", FUTURE EX:, "I pick you" but alas she doesnt. Trite, long-winded and dated.

If this hadn't starred Julia Roberts, whom I generally adore in movies, I would not have enjoyed this movie at all. It was very long and dull in many parts. I thought it would be a great chick-flick so a female friend and I attended together but neither of us were thrilled with it. I have read some of the other reviews and I think if I had read the book, I would have understood more. Instead, I did feel confused about what the main character was looking for in her quest, didn't understand her sudden desire to buy a house for the medicine woman, and didn't really enjoy or even fully understand the movie's ending (I am being vague so as not to spoil it for others). Javier Bardem was pretty good and did as much with his role as he could.

I loved Liz Gilbert's book, & looked forward to the movie. I also love Julia Roberts, so how could this miss? The cinematography, locations & acting were perfect, but the story in the movie had major gaps in it that were fully explained in the book. In the movie, it looked like she went from relationship to relationship, without explaining the problems with her marriage, her addictive relationship with the actor, & why she was attracted to Felipe. So much of the book was inside of her head. The movie did not explain that the house in Bali was a bargain, why she helped buy the house for the medicine woman, or why she was in search of herself. I loved the movie; but my husband who did not read the book was confused. It was a long movie that did not explain enough, but I loved it.

Empty, too long, sometimes even boring. Julia Roberts is great (as usual), but I've seen much better of her. If only Javier Bardem showed up earlier in the movie......Also, the story is about looking deeper into yourself, finding non-material values, but still, she never wore the same dress twice, she lived in pricy places (house in Bali), bought things whenever she needed them , had Internet access everywhere and she did not live moneyless for a moment....hard to believe in it.

I was so bummed out by this movie. I didn't feel as though I truly experienced anything in any of the countries. Where was the "FOOD" in Italy? India was pointless. Javier Bardem saved the movie because I felt like someone was having a real experience when he came on the screen with Julia.
I read the book but had incredibly low expectations from the movie because I read the book. Five girlfriends went to see it and we all were bummed out by the movie. It felt like the movie was in fast forward the entire time. Never stayed with one moment or experience long enough for us to feel anything. I cared about nothing in that movie except for Javier Bardem.
