As a Star Trek fan for several decades, I had great expectations for this movie. Unfortunately, it did not deliver the goods. Was it entertaining? Yes. But , for me, it did not capture the soul of previous Star Trek endeavors.
Here are some reasons why without spoiling the show ... Captain Kirk - too reckless ... Mr. Spock - too emotional ... the storyline - focused more on action sequences than an intelligent and thought provoking story.
In the end, as stated previously, it was entertaining ... but I don't believe Gene Roddenberry would approve.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This has to be the best of the feature length movies! It does a great job of integrating the past (original episodes) into the story line and even makes use of some obscure events from the series. The plot winds it's way and keeps the audience engaged the whole time. A must see for those of us who watched the originals in our youth!

Simply the best written and acted Star Trek anything ever. It is strong enough for existing fans, fun enough to make new fans, and clever enough to set it's future apart from the established franchise. And it is amazing in IMAX.

I thought the movie was incredibly entertaining' action-packed with a little comedy thrown in here and there. It took such a twist with the time travel deal that now they can do anything with the story lines with out compromising the past episodes of the original Star Trek. All of the characters in this movie stayed true to the personality characters of each of the original crew members. I grew up watching the original series and I eagerly am anticipating the next movie in this series.

I was anxiously awaiting the release of this movie --- but also apprehensive because I've been a fan of Star Trek ever since the original series (before it was in syndication!). The actors were spot on in their portrayal of our beloved characters --- very well done!!! I truly appreciated having Leonard Nimoy come back as well --- both for the story line and for its continuity. I do wish, however, Bill Shatner had been able to have a part, too. Perhaps in the next installation??? The action sequences were fabulous, the story line very creative and interesting and the banter between the characters gave it a familiar feel that I truly enjoyed. Thanks, Mr. Abrams, for boldly succeeding where others have not!

Took my 6-year old son. He needs similar wonderous exposure that mom had to Star Trek. Now, when I watch the original tv shows, he will be a bit more tolerant.
The movie was fun, exciting and like any good movie, made me want to see many more like it.

They took a very simple storyline and added a lot of Hollywood effects, but the overall movie ended up being excellent. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because they tried a little too hard to bring in known characteristics of the characters' personalities that felt staged. As an example, Spock sits in a chair that then rotates in place and he says "fascinating." For Spock to say that about something that was absurdly simple, it just didn't fit the defined personality of the character. Would I see it again anyways? You bet...maybe even 3 or 4 more times! It was a great movie and even though it was labeled PG13, the 9-12 year old group will love it and parents will find almost nothing offensive for them.

I've been a fan since the beginning. I wasn't expecting a lot but was totally surprised. This was agreat movie, staying true to the story, and using original comments from the TV series. We laughed, we cried, we would see it again and recommend it to our friends and family.

I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was very young and am very pleased with JJ Abrahms take on the Star Trek story. This movie breaths new life into the series and entertains. It's true to the original and yet takes off in some very different directions. Those wanting orthodoxy might be disappointed but those who loved the series for the basic concept of "boldly going..." will accept this new tangent as an exciting opportunity for new adventures. It's one of the few movies I seen lately that leave me wishing I hadn't seen it so that I would be able to watch it again for the first time! I'm looking forward to the next installment.

This is the best Star Trek movie ever. This surprised me since few movies which continue old / successful stories live up to the oriignal. When I got to the end, I was left wanting more.
The continuity of Nimoy as the old Spock was a good jumping off point. But it leaves us without the need to continue with any of the old stars. The new stars can stand on their own. And having a more human Spock in this new time line (without going overboard, thank you) was surpisingly successful.
I'm now waiting impatiently for the next Trek. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long!

I have always been a Star Wars fan. The title/status of "Jedi" has always worked its way into my video game handles in one way or another; all in all Star Trek held no place in my heart.
This movie changed that. Each character was reintroduced, and background information or character development was demonstrated for each to allow the viewer to create their bonds with previously unacquainted individuals.
The casting was well done, the action was fast paced, there were plenty of laughs, and a few strategically milked tears as well. Do not be intimidated, do not be hesitant, do not be sluggish - this is a movie to be seen as soon as you can get to the theater. You'll love it.

I agree with what someone said that it is a good sci-fi movie but a bad Star Trek film. It is targeted at a demographic that likes action over plot building. This film is all over the place and does not seem like its 250 years in the future but more like 50. It is not futuristic enough and Nero and his crew are more like a biker gang than Romulans as are most of the main characters development. J.J. has contorted the Star Trek genre into an illogical warp speed mess.

This was one of the first movies in a long time which has me eagerly waiting for the sequel. The development of the cast members was almost perfect. You felt as if you watched them grow up and could sense the bonds of friendship forming. The new "take" on the classic is definitely interesting and should set the stage for some great follow up movies, I'm glad that Nemoy had a bit part but I don't see any need for Shatner in the follow-ups. Nemoy did a great job of "bridging" the series and now I'd say it can more than survive on it's own merits. The new "Enterprise" was amazing! Great idea to start the movie with action and then get into the development, really kept me wanting more throughout the movie!

Was raised on the original Trek series and It was very thought out and the characters were very well done! Great first scene with the vette! (Weird NOKIA plug though.) The fight scenes, the way they were filmed, were a little overwhelming.. visually. (Kind of made head spin) However the graphics, with a very good story line made up for it. I was pleased when Nimoy appeared! Loved it!

I loved the way they wove Captain Pike into the prequel, creating his back story that meshes with the stories in the series. He even looked like Captain Pike! Ditto with all the other characters, making them a continuity of the old yet fresh and up to date. They even managed to use the old Spock in a wonderfully creative way. I kinda miss the old philosophizing though that made the old one so relevant to its time.

This is the first trek movie in a long time that will create its own following and make a new generation eagerly await a sequel. It combines great action sequences with time travel, humor and characters that people want to know more about. Rather than a remake where actors try to outdo their predecessors, this group does an admirable job of letting the audience relate back to the original crew.
One thing that might anger some serious trek fans is the way in which time travel was used to alter events in such a way that the future of this crew is not to recreate the events of the original Star Trek universe.
This is Star Trek for the 21st Century, and it's off to a great start.

I gotta say I was a bit skeptical when
I read other reviews about Star Trek.The kudos, I thought were too easily lavished upon this effort, BUT alas, I was wrong. I grew up watching the original Star Trek and was pleasantly surprised, as was the wife. The performances were spot on as the new actors breathed life into the original characters. I think JJ Abrams deserves big props for his AWESOME film. It definitely has great continuity and is relevant to all audiences. You need not be an avid Trekkie to enjoy the eye candy...
I would definitely add this flick to my Blu-Ray disc collection. Can't wait!!

I am by no means an expert on films or Star Trek. However, I have seen a lot of movies in my life, and I know a good one versus a bad one. This movie is a fun watch from beginning to end. It doesn't require deep thinking, which was perfect, because I was in the mood for something "light." It has a little something for everyone, as it holds elements of drama, comedy, action, and romance. All of the actors did a great job, too. It was a fun movie to watch, and I look forward to any sequels!

This movie was phenomenal! Me and my family loved it. It was like going home for me and my husband. We have seen all the Star Trek movies and all the episodes for all of the television series. We loved it. We could name the different characters before their names were said on the screen. The casting was great. The special effects were awesome and the music was spectacular.

Overall it was an enjoyable film; but it seems like they tried to throw a little bit of everything in there to please every possible segment of the audience. For the most part they succeeded.
They got the Spock and Bones characters nailed; and the Chekov and Scotty weren't far off.

I grew up watching Star Trek with my dad and came to love Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. Although Im no avid Trekie--I was excited to see this movie. However I was skeptical of how good the story line may be with a young cast and the fact its based on them actually being young. WOW is all I can say. From the beginning to end--the story unfolded from one funny exciting scene to the next. The only part I thought was weird was the plug for Nokia.

Man, I went into this movie expecting something amazing. I got something undercooked. I guarantee that if J.J. Abrams' name wasn't on this people wouldn't be raving about it the way they are. Most of the acting is laughable, the science is sketchy, and the dialog is downright corny. The good things would be the action sequences, the set design, and the CGI. Overall I give it 2 stars. I recommend waiting until you can rent the DVD.
