Freddie Highmore does an okay job playing twins. I don't think this is his best work. The movie was fun to watch. It had a lot of violence that I did not expect. The story was good. I have never read the books so I don't know how it compares. But, I never like to compare books that are adapted to movies because it is a totally different medium. I think this movie would be too scary for kids under 10. I will not be letting my 8 year old nephew or 5 year old niece to see this movie. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to adults. I think adults would enjoy this movie even though it seems to be geared towards kids.

Helllooo I don't think any of these other reviewers actually read the books. My 10 y/o daughter and I both read the series and LOVED the books. We had been looking forward to this movie for months only to be very dissapointed with it. If your kids have read the books they will not be happy with this movie. Some of the main concepts in the movie didn't even exist in the books. It is too bad... especially with amazing movies like the Chronicles of Narnia being made to almosty perfectly match their books.
Overall this film does a bad job of jamming the contents of a great 7 short-book series into a 1.5 hour movie. They should have kept the story straight instead of making up new stuff and made it a longer movie. Apparently though people who didn't read the books thought it was great. LOL

I enjoyed this fairytale movie with a twist.The story was pretty interesting with the monsters trying to get a hold of this book that reveals their whole world, and the honey eating hobbit. I think both Adults, and kids would like this movie.

Overall, this movie was a pleasant surprise...much better than I had anticipated. The child actors gave great performances with a lot of professional polish. A lower-key Harry Potter type of movie without all the hype! This moving is a definate see for the whole family. All my kids 13, 10 and 10 loved it. One 10 year old was a little scared at times, particularly when the boy was being dragged out of the circle, but loved most of the movie. If you have a kid that gets scared easily, maybe think twice about this but most will love it. My husband thought the special effects were fantastic, so did I. What's even better is that it has a wonderful family message. Definately go see.

Our family saw this the second weekend it came out and the theater was still packed. This was a really cool movie. It reminded me a little of the neverending story. I am going to be seeing it again with my friend and her kids tomorrow. Id see this one and while its in theaters.

We thought that this was a good movie in the fact that it puts value to family and togetherness (even though the parents were obviously separated and headed for a divorce). Fantasy mixed in with reality gives a lesson without it being boring and gives kids a way to deal with tough issues like this one in the movie. The special effects were good and the storyline kept you hooked. Both of our kids (one is 13 the other is 8) enjoyed this one.

I thought the movie was excellent but perhaps a little scary for younger children. And what was with the ogre almost saying the S*** word, before the oven exploding? this is supposed to be made by nickelodeon? Other than that, great suspense and special effects and I believe the movie does instill a wonder for the unknown in people. The plot made sense, and nothing was left hanging leaving the viewer to think, what just happened? no parts of the plot were left unreconciled. No loose ends. A nice tidy conclusion. I would definitely watch the movie again.

My family and I (6 of us) went to see Spiderwick. It was better than expected. My son has the first collection of Spiderwick Chronicles. He said that the movie was the first book of the series. It has good special effects and it was a clean movie. A great lesson is taught about what a true family is. Great family movie!

To be blunt: It's a good 'sure why not' movie.
To be specific: Spiderwick is a movie that runs along the same theme of child fantasy as a number of other recently released movies (Chronicles of Narnia, Golden Compass, Enchanted, etc). It seems to me producers saw the amount of money made on Narnia and thought to themselves 'hmm, kids like fantasy movies now, ok we'll give 'em fantasy then!' Despite the lack of genre originality, the story was alright. Basically this kid finds a book with a warning note attached to it instructing that it not be opened. The kid (of course) opens it anyway and all nil breaks loose. So then he and his siblings go on a long quest to fix the problem and end up fixing it permanently rather than halfway (like it had been fixed before). The plot wasn't 100% original and seemed to be a (slightly messy) mix of ideas inspired from other stories. I don't know how well the movie followed the book, as I never read the book (or series or whatever it is). Sorry! The special effects were pretty good, and I liked how they kept the big goblin hidden from view for a little bit. It increased the sinister mystery of the bad guy (I always like that bad guy effect).
All in all, this movie was made for kids with less-than-critical points of view just looking for a cool movie to watch on a Saturday night with some friends or their parents. As for everyone else, it would be slightly more interesting if one or two people got mauled and maybe if the griffin flight was a bit more extreme.

I took my slightly sensitive 6 year old and 10 year old to see this movie and had to leave after about 1/2 hour because it was too scary. There are many scenes with scary supernatural events (a boy being dragged into the woods by invisible creatures) and the whole first part of the movie is one scary creature or sound after another. I think this movie was scarier than, or at least on par with, the scariest Harry Potter movies. The ogre is also very sinister and the sounds which accompany him scared ME and reminded me of the sound effects from The Exorcist. My kids can both watch Star Wars type movies with no problem, but this movie was WAY too scary. I don't know why critics and parents are reccommending it for young children. I gave it 3 stars because the special effects are great and this movei would be enjoyed by OLDER children who like a scare.

this is a great movie for children,it resembles many stories like the narnia,goosebumps etc ,but this movie has its own style in presentation,the monsters are not really scary but they evoke laughter,A MUST WATCH FOR KIDS

The movie was very good however, if you had read the books like my husband and I did, you may be a bit disappointed. The books were very exciting to read, I guess I was expecting the movie would be the same.

Did I miss something?! I could see this movie beng entertaining for the 10 and under group, but for adults, I have to say It was not good. I was wondering why an english boy was living with Americans, and also, the movie didnt really have any depth to it. Mainly a lot of goblins and the like running around yelling and carrying on in the forest! Although I did not think it was horrible, I really wouldnt recommend this movie to anyone but a younger child.
