I took my slightly sensitive 6 year old and 10 year old to see this movie and had to leave after about 1/2 hour because it was too scary. There are many scenes with scary supernatural events (a boy being dragged into the woods by invisible creatures) and the whole first part of the movie is one scary creature or sound after another. I think this movie was scarier than, or at least on par with, the scariest Harry Potter movies. The ogre is also very sinister and the sounds which accompany him scared ME and reminded me of the sound effects from The Exorcist. My kids can both watch Star Wars type movies with no problem, but this movie was WAY too scary. I don't know why critics and parents are reccommending it for young children. I gave it 3 stars because the special effects are great and this movei would be enjoyed by OLDER children who like a scare.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
