Half Good/Half Bad > See or Rent - s'il vous plait

Travolta's over-the-top bad good guy is fun for the first 45 minutes of this comic book-esque action flick. Then the "powers-that-be" pull him back a bit and begin focusing on the softer, gentler counter-balance character played by Rhys Meyers and the mystery with his girlfriend. The movie goes flat when Travolta is off-screen ,,,, and it telegraphs the action, plot and "surprise twists". Luc Besson would have handled the movie better as both writer AND director. I miss his 5th Element glory days! Travolta's rendition of Agent Wax is worth a viewing even if it is a rental. Au revoir.

See Seraphine! This movie is much like her art!

What a gorgeous, textured, layered rendered tale director Provost "paints" for us with his film Seraphine! Exquisite in it's depiction of early 1900s France, breath-taking cinematography, a deft touch by the director regarding the script & pacing .... all capped off with pitch-perfect acting ....especially from Yolande Moreau as Seraphine! Kudos to Provost in his restraint so as to limit in and out cuts in editing - which allows the camera to linger longer to capture time and movement perfect for this atmosphere & story. See Seraphine - you will be transported to her life & world!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

An Opus For What Happens When Love is Abandoned

Lars von Trier is a fascinating director. Antichrist is an unusual exploration of where the ultimate depths of unforgiveness can lead. This film is absolutely not for everybody! Director von Trier does not shrink from what he wants to show us .... but most in the audience will. If you can get past the shock of some of this movie you will find a message of "how not to live ... how not to love ..... and how not to hold on to grief, pain, despair, anger, resentment, hate, jealousy .... and, especially, unforgiveness. There is little middle ground for this one. I thought it was an amazing film, often hard to watch, creatively & visually stunning with an underlying current about love and the abandonment of love.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Mel Gibson's Best Acting in 10 Years - see it!

Edge of Darkness has some holes in it. At times it is too predictable. Some of the supporting characters are playing roles we have seen them play before. All of that said - this is a film worth investing 108 minutes with - if only for Mel Gibson's portrayal of the main character. He feels real, vulnerable, angry, contemplative, sad, confused and all of the complex and subtle emotions that a loving father would be over the sudden, violent death of their twenty-something daughter .... and Mel does it well ....very well indeed! An impressive performance by Mel Gibson!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

An Inspiring & Interesting True Story-worth seeing

Please see this movie for the story itself. This true story-based movie will grab hold of you and keep you in it's clutches to the end. The story is so incredible, suspenseful and awe-inspiring that we can forgive the director's over-indulgent control of his primary actors. Ford is just too angry & emotional and Fraser is too calm & matter-of-fact .... much of the time. This over & under angst gives the movie a bit of a "Hallmark movie of the Month" feel. It has the length to have infused some more complicated personalities in the main characters. This keeps it from greatness but it still remains an inspirational tale of heroic triumph!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Nothing Here to Sink Your Teeth Into! Skip it!

Yes - this is a "clean comedy" built around the premise of an adult pro hockey player that is over-loaded with cynicism meeting up with a sweet gal with 2 cute kids who are all "in need" of a male figure to be a hubby & dad. Hmmmm .... how do we fix his weak points & make him a perfect fix for the kiddies & mommy? Aha! We invent a real tooth fairy land where lessons in humility, ego & dreams can be learned. This is where the movie begins feeling like a slow root canal procedure. Ouch! One sees everything coming. There are 2 funny bits in the film - both have Billy Crystal in them. Trouble is that Crystal is only on screen for about 10 minutes the entire movie. More Billy, less hockey ....might have made the difference.

Legion is Stuck in Pergatory - Skip it!

I love movies that have a Frank Peretti-like feel .... or movies that create drama around the ultimate battle of "good vs. evil" & I was really looking forward to Legion. While this movie has some interesting tidbits .... those tidbits are just too few and in-between. The movie is dis-jointed, leaves too many dots to be connected - even within the fictional world it creates. On the positive side Bettany is surprisingly good as an a warrior-angel and Quaid, while under-utilized, gives one of his most interesting performances to date. This adds up to maybe 15% of what is in the movie. The rest - special effects, plot, cinematography, dialogue, editing & sound - are below par & expectations. Skip this one.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Fight Your Way to a Viewing of Bronson-A Must-See!

Thank the "movie-powers-that-be" for Andrea Beesley-Brown .... The Midnite Movie Mamacita .... & MadCap Theaters in Tempe AZ! Not sure how else we get to see Bronson on the big screen - and it deserves to be seen there! Make very effort you can to seek, locate & view this interesting, original, well-told tale of the true-life "most violent prisoner" in the history of Great Britain. It is a mesmerizing look into the nature, activities & thinking of this strange & dangerous "lost soul". The scenes where we "get into the mind" of Bronson and he tries to show us what a great "entertainer" he is are extraordinary! Kudos to the director, lead actor Hardy & the entire team!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This One is a Mixed Bag O' Bones....

In spite of some top notch acting and an intriguing plot and narrative "The Lovely Bones" is not a must-see film. The movie is too long, too loosely edited and often it does not connect us very well between the real-world goings-on and the "heaven's waiting room" scenes. Maybe that is intentional but it creates a disconnect which interferes with the movie's emotional motivations. I recommend it primarily for several imaginative scenes in the heaven-like dimension the young murdered soul is lingering in....and the acting by Wahlberg, Tucci, Sarandon & Ronan.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Farenheit 451+MadMax+The Road=Book of Eli....

....and that's a good thing! Denzel Washington expands his considerable acting range once again and shows us why he has long been and still is a top tier American Movie Actor! This movie is a post-apocalyptic epic, visually stunning in it's sepia toned cinematography, filled with interesting characters, pulsating with mystery, energetic in it's message of hope .... and ever-engaging thanks largely to Washington's enigmatic & charismatic portrayal of the nomadic, driven, chosen main character .... Eli. A stirring film. Kudos to all involved. Some will "get it" more than others - and that's okay! Get in your car, drive to the nearest cineplex and see The Book of Eli in-theater ASAP!
