I was not expecting much and, perhaps, this is why I was so pleasantly surprised. A movie about how teenage passion and obsession will find a way to "explore the mysteries of the universe". The journey is the movie. There are many off-beat, crazy, weird, darkly humorous "bramble patches" the journey takes us through. Michael Cera is very funny and has become an expert at playing a role that we (the movie-watching public) perceive as being very much like that of the real-life Michael Cera. There are several laugh-out-very-loud moments in this comedy that should exceed your expectations.
Terry Gilliam's movie are always, unapologetically, about his subjective and personal vision. The result is something unique .... but certainly not for everybody. Gilliam's films take an investment from the viewer in order to see more of his intention and message. I have always found it helpful to read a synopsis of his movies before I actually see them. This helps me take in more of the movie's textures and visual effects. Loved this movie and it's "deal with the devil" theme. So many levels to explore and Gilliam "sticks his toe" into many of them. Plummer, Ledger & Waits are pitch-perfect and a lot of fun! Only complaint is it's very slow first 30 minutes.
Love Amy Adams and Leap Year has some top notch actors doing their thing ....and doing it well. The problem is that we really don't care. We have no empathy or real connection with the lead characters. I did not feel any chemistry or natural motivation for the two primary characters! Why do they like each other or do the things they are doing. There were a few "slapstick" moments of physical comedy that were "cringingly" funny and some gorgeous scenes of Irish countryside and craggy shorelines (especially at the end of the movie) but those all add up to about 10 or 15 minutes - not enough to recommend it. This movie is not a "pot o' gold" at the end of your movie-money-budget rainbow!
Finally! A movie about vampires that combines all the juicy best parts of vampire movie lore with a new & original twist....that is also well-acted, scripted, paced and edited....with some nice cinematography .... all that and an ending that you don't see coming! Best "mainstream" big budget vampire movie in a long, long time! Hawke is very good. Sam Neill & Willem Dafoe are a hoot! I loved every component of this movie. It is rare for TheMovieRhino to want to see a horror movie twice - very rare - but I will see this one, in-theater, a second time - and can't wait! If you have a craving for some good old vampire action with an original story then this one will get your heart thumping! See it!
A regal re-telling of the life & circumstances surrounding a young Victoria - before she becomes the Queen of England - later her coronation - still following the young queen into her first few years of reign. This film is perfectly acted and it is visually scrumptious. The director does a majestic job of creating the atmosphere and environment of that era. Very nice cinematography and costuming. The story is believable, intriguing and keeps you entranced. Thoroughly enjoyable! For the full impact try and catch this film in as large of a theater as possible - but do see it - regardless! Hail to the queen!
It would be a shame if adult movie-goers avoid "A Single Man" because they believe it is a movie about a g*y man. Director Ford does a great job of constructing a layered, textured film about love, loss, loneliness, depression, healing and the ironies of life. Colin Firth & Julianne Moore expand their range - giving us something more than we have grown accustomed to - beyond the considerable acting prowess they both consistently have provided in their films of recent years. This movie will hold your rapt attention and keep you empathically transfixed from start to finish. Both Firth & Moore should be confident of Oscar nominations! See it on the big screen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Crazy Heart is Crazy Good + TheMovieRhino's Top 20
Jeff Bridges is really good as Bad! Pitch perfect acting throughout along with a great story that holds your attention. Predictable at times without feeling manipulative. The tale of a country singer that is living the life that is so often the subject of country songs about drinking, loving, leaving & coming home.

Reading critical reviews and hearing from my friends that have seen this movie it is obvious that this is a film you will either love or hate.... very few "luke warms" here. We were entranced the entire movie and loved all of it! Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing! What can't he do? Kidman, Cruz, Dench, Loren & Cotillard are equally terrific! We had low expectations as the primary subject matter (1965 Italian director/film-making) did not excite us. Rob Marshall sprinkles his "magic movie musical pixie dust" on this film and creates something original, moving and entertaining! I guess you know what side of the "love it-hate it" crowd we ended up in. See it!
Robert Downey Jr. breathes life, once again, into a cherished fictional character. May be Guy Ritchie's best effort yet as he updates the master sleuth and puts him on display with all of his idiosyncrasies in full view - neurotic insecurities & obsessions ... as well as his unmatched eye for detail & deduction. Ritchie has woven an action tale that keeps us riveted on the story, Holmes himself and the complex world he lives in. The film is not a literal homage to Sherlock Holmes as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as much as it is an updated Holmes infused with Ritchie's stylings & grounded in a detailed, fascinating look at the world of late 19th century England. Bloody well done!
It is the rare movie comedy that takes full advantage of the talents & personalities of it's 3 main stars. It's Complicated succeeds in doing this plus it injects some "true-to-life" under-current pathos without diluting the inherent humor & irony which is the "meat & potatoes" of the film. Streep, Martin & Baldwin are all in top form and seem organic (& perfect) for this story & humor. Could it be that their characters are amplifications of their real-life personas - or at least true to our perceptions of them? This film is nearly perfect with the only weaknesses being it is too long and it could have been edited a bit tighter. Still - well worth an in-theater viewing this holiday season - see it!
