What about .... "The Morgans?" Too long, too cliche, too predictable, too unbelievable, too little chemistry between Grant & Parker .... too much "not so good" stuff going on in this "comedy chick-flick". It would have been easy enough to give this movie one star & totally write it off but I remembered laughing out loud several times at Hugh Grant's dry English "crumpetty" (yes - I made up that word) humor. I've missed that a bit - apparently - so, out of appreciation & nostalgia for "Hugh's humor" - it gets two stars. Cannot recommend seeing it in a theater but it may be worth a NetFlix rental 3 months from now.
Did not have much of an idea about what this movie was about before going. I did know that it starred Morgan Freeman & Matt Damon ... and it was directed by Clint Eastwood. That provided enough pedigree to get me into a theater seat. These talented actors & director, once again, do not disappoint. Freeman seems born to play Nelson Mandela. Matt Damon transforms himself into the captain of the South African Rugby team. Both are amazing! You can tell how good an actor is when you forget their star persona and you only see the character they are portraying ,,, and this metamorphosis occurs here. A nearly perfect movie about redemption and the power of Amazing Grace! See Invictus in a theater for the full rewards it offers.
With as much hype & buzz that Avatar has garnered over the last 2+ years it is hard to believe that the film comes close to meeting anyone's expectations.....but ....it meets & exceeds them! Breathtaking, Immersive, ground-breaking, innovative, epic, visionary - are all apt adjectives and still they do not adequately capture the extent of James Cameron's achievement! 160 minutes fly by and no one wants to leave their seat for fear of missing something! Cameron has created an alien world of lush, exotic efflorescent flora & fauna that seems but a simple leap from our own....and it is....all you need is a movie ticket. All aboard - next stop - Pandora!
May be Clooney's best role and acting performance ever! Vera Farmiga & Anna Kendrick are every bit as good as Clooney! A movie that makes you think, makes you laugh & makes you sad ..... all at the same time. I loved every minute of "Up In The Air" from the opening titles to the very last note at the end of the movie. This film is the updated version of a 50's war movie - the one where the hero fights the war, is one of the best at what he does, romances women with his confidence & manner, finds his humanity, falls in love only to discover "his girl" got married while he was away "in battle". In the end he knows he is what he is ... a warrior .... and a darn good one to boot!
The only aspect to "Armored" that felt somewhat complete and fulfilling were the "armored truck chase scenes". Everything else in the movie was under-developed and under-utilized. That's a shame because the movie is chocked full of quality A-list movie actors and the premise itself has huge potential. Where is the back-story? Where are the nuances in the primary character relationships? Where is the meaningful dialogue? Where are the logical connections to each new piece to the story? This is a coin toss. I can recommend seeing the movie for the action scenes and the general twists - but it's a close call. May be a better investment of your movie investment dollars to rent later or see at the dollar theaters.
Brothers is a non-formulaic look at the complexity of human relationships sifted through the filter of war and deep emotional trauma. It is packed full of exceptional acting by all of the lead actors & child actors. Brothers is riveting from the opening scene to the last - keeping us all off-balance with emotional nuances, unexpected twists and restraint that keeps the movie from diving into the typical chasm of Hollywood schlock! The last 10 minutes transports this movie from simply good to the upper stratosphere of great. No need to define this film as liberal or conservative. It is, in my opinion, apolitical. It is a film about the hero and villain in all of us. See it!
Script, story, pacing, cinematography, score - all A+. Add pitch perfect acting by the entire cast and - viola - you have a nearly perfect movie. Some critics have said this a left-wing liberal slant on the war and on our military. I did not take it that way. War is H*ll! It always will be. This film deals with the repercussions of warriors killed in action and the extraordinary men who are charged with notifying the nearest of kin of their death. Tough stuff! A well-told tale about the heroes that guard our freedoms and those that give the ultimate sacrifice . See it!
Nick Cage's best character role and best performance in a long, long time! There is more irony & Kismet in this story than any 10 films you might pull out of a hat. Quirky, original, unexpected....this flick will have you on the edge of your seat, shaking your head in disbelief and sometimes laughing at the sheer "weirdness" of it all. The movie is seasoned with top notch actors, above average cinematography, perfect dialogue, a quality script....and a perfect ending (that I did not see coming until the last few minutes)! Leave your iguana at home & head to a nearby theater ASAP to catch this gem of a tale!
A modern homage to the violent loner martial arts movies of yore. Think Enter The Dragon meets Kill Bill. Would have liked a bit more slo-mo in some of the fight scenes just to savor the ballet of movement. Having said that I enjoyed the fight scenes and most of the ninja battles. Some of the camera work and stylizing was original and had a unique flair. Very violent. Not for kids. If you feel a bit starved for a decent martial arts flick this may well keep you from starvation. I want to see more of Rain in a more complex martial arts movie.
Quality comedic actors team up for a movie that is very predictable and not all that dog-gone funny. I did laugh out loud a few times - thus the 2 star rating. More often I felt a bit sorry for Robin Williams in this flick (while wondering where the old Robin Williams energy & range had gone). If your funny bone can be tickled by: old dogs peeing on carpet, misspelled tattoos, mixed up medications & their aftermath, golfballs being mishit into the crotches of guys waiting to tee off, hand-models getting their hands slammed in the car trunk lid, guys in gorilla suits treating a small man like their favorite toy, etc. - then this movie is for you. If not - skip it!
