I went with my daughter not expecting much from this movie. I was very suprised. It had a great story line about father/son hardships and just not fitting in, but learning to stand up for yourself. I went back to see it a second time with my son. I will probably buy the movie when it comes out.

My six year old daughter & I saw this movie yesterday. WE LOVED IT! The graphics were so realistic and the colors were vivid and true to life. It held our attention and we even held out for a bathroom break until after the movie. We will be buying the DVD when it comes out.

This movie was amazing! I went to see it with a friend and we both loved it! The 3D was awesome and the characters were adorable! A great film, surprising considering Dreamworks' reputation for dry flops. Fluid animation, great character developments all around, and the visuals are gorgeous even without 3D (until the flight scenes), this was a great treat for any animal-film enthusiast. The composer and the latest former-Disney addition to the team seem to be a good move! Step off, Pete's Dragon and Dragonheart, here comes the Nightfury!
Unlike the story this claims to be based off, HTTYD is a heartfelt film about the usual out-of-place protagonist who wants to please the crowd but finds it'll take more mind and soul over matter to do what's really important to being able to respect himself rather than seek respect from others. Hiccup is intelligent and a bit confused about where he belongs, but upon injuring a rather rare dragon, he tries to aid it when it spares his life in return for sparing it. In secret, they very slowly form an unlikely bond that eventually goes beyond "training" a dragon and more coming to a compromise with it. In spite of the obvious cat/dog/bat-like characteristics, there is a knowing intelligence behind those dragon eyes thanks to the spectacular animators and creature design. The usual human-animal-bond theme is present, but nothing feels forced. Even the jokes are skimmed over in place of progressing the story, something the writer of the books this is lo-o-osely based off of could learn.
Brief note about having tried the book this was named for: The dragons talk, are sociopathic, Toothless is a spoiled annoying runt, Hiccup is a selfish kid who steals the dragon while its sleeping in its cave to force it to his will, wondering why it doesn't want to obey his every whim so he can pass some test or risk his own father banishing him to potential death to keep the blood of the tribe strong, and there are no female characters...in a book about Vikings. There are also illustrations, but they're horrid, usually irrelevant, and splattered across nearly every page to boost the page count...and make the reader get a headache. And we're not even discussing the age-level confusing writing or the toilet humor littered throughout that'll please only the most immature 5-year-old...or someone who's rammed his head into a wall a few times too many.
I normally enjoy reading a book when I hear it was made into a movie, but this was the second book I've read in my life where the movie wins by leaps and bounds. There was just so much more meaning put into that film.

We are glad that we watched this movie. It was very good movie. It would have been even better if we could watch it in 3D, lot better actually. Some of the scences felt so good as if we are riding "Soaring california" from disney adventures. I wonder how would it feel, if it were 3D or 4D? Anyway, if you liked avatar, don't miss this movie. My 4 year daughter watched this movie to the end, even though some of the scenes were a little scary for her. later she said, she enjoyed the movie a lot. Dragons are not scary, they are cute.

OK - didn't even get to watch 20 minutes of the movie because I had to walk out w/ my 3 year old. It is way too scary for small children. I normally have a medium tolerance to such movies - I have allowed my children to watch Star Wars and other more adult-themed movies. But I am amazed that some of my friends have taken their children to this movie and not complained as to how scary it was .. even my 7 year old had a couple of "eye-closing" scenes. It's a great Pixar flick, I'm sure, but NOT FOR UNDER 5 or 6. My favorite though had to be the preview before the movie started for a teenage VAMPIRE movie. What the heck is the entertainment industry thinking?!? We should have seen Shrek!

Was a delightful and story and great animation. The relationship issues and resolutions were very useful in todays scocial makup. The secret of a good film is its story. This is simply a terrific story. Its well told and well animated. I had hesitated to go but a friend had raved about it and he was right. Animation is not just for kids when its done right. But kids will love it too. Its that kind of movie.
The story has been told many times in many ways but its still works. Its the tale of a son who doesn't live up to his father's expectations because he's different. The son want's to be one of the guys but he's not. And of course he learns that sometimes its actually better to be different. A lesson that that father needs to learn as well. A wounded dragon and a wounded boy. What could be better than that? Trust me. Its well worth seeing even if you have your doubts!

This was an adorable movie. I Recommend everyone to see this. You also will see the other side. He was told to kill dragons. he didnt want to, he found another way. I took my 10-year-old grandson to see this movie and am happy to say it was one that we could both enjoy (he LOVED it and wants to buy it). While it was somewhat formulaic (as several reviewers have said), it had a good heart, beautiful artwork (including the dimensional stuff), a hair-raising climax, and a lovely idea (that sometimes the one who goes against the habits of generations can discover a wonderful new path for everyone).
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Nice graphics and moderately entertaining, however I felt underwhelmed, perhaps because of all the good reviews. I didn't feel it was that entertaining.

I absolutely loved this movie! My 18 month old rarely sits still during our movie night but he sat still for this movie longer than any other. The characters were great and I will definitely buy the dvd when it becomes available.

Another high-quality CGI feature from Dreamworks Animation SKG. Didn't have the humor of KF Panda, and story line very predictable, but good for kid movie for under 9 set.
Saw this in 2D, was undoubtedly better in 3D as flight intensive flick.
