I enjoyed the movie. I have been asked what is it about and the response some of my friends and I have come up with is "Fern Gully" meets "Phochotans". If you are trying to chose beween 3D and IMAX. I would go with the IMAX. The 3D screen I saw it on was a bit narrow and close.

My husband and I are not usually movie goers but several friends and family said Avatar was a must see. Apprehensive, my husband and I and our Marine son decided to go last night.
The IMAX 3D gave more insight, the glasses were not a problem after all.
All of us were wowed with the graphics and beauty and animation. I loved it as a "love story" plus our son and husband loved the war stuff and lots of action. Very good actors.
The only negative was 2.75 hours was too long, though it was worth it, never got bored either.

Don't believe the hype. Everybody would have written this movie off completely were it not for the admittedly impressive special effects. The story is ridiculously trite; it's been done before, and it's been done better. There was nothing this movie showed me that I haven't already seen in some other form, or other kind of animation. James Cameron didn't drop the ball; the movie was watchable once. But a classic? No, don't give the guy so much credit. Frankly, it scares me that all it seems to take to capture the hearts and wallets of the world today is bright colors, flashing lights, and the occasional loud noise. Even my cats expect more from their entertainment than that.

I went to IMAX website, therefore I thought I was buying tickets for the IMAX movie theater. When I arrived to the theater in Columbia, MD, they informed me I bought tickets for the 3D movie...not IMAX movie theater. I felt scammed. The screen is much smaller. So I refunded tickets...which of course I did not get the "service charge" refund from movietickets.com. I bought tickets at the theater for the next showing in IMAX theater and waited. What a fine print kind of scam they have linked to IMAX website. When I buy something from the IMAX website...i did not expect to buy tickets for the non IMAX theater screening.

Maybe my standards are lower than those of the other reviewers, but I LOVED it. Although the 3D did make it even better, I would have enjoyed the movie without it as well. I didn't think the storyline was cheesy, predictable...somewhat, but the special effects made up for that twice over. Cameron is amazing, and I would see this over and over if it wasn't so expensive.

Movie was an amazing experience! The plot was political, predictable, and transparent, but it was an enjoyable journey nonetheless. The 3D effects were absolutely mesmerizing! They actually "made" the movie! However.....I was disappointed that, even though the movie contained no "F" bombs (thank goodness!), the "GD" expletive was sprinkled throughout the movie. I was highly offended to hear God's name taken in vain!! When will Hollywood realize that a blockbuster doesn't need profanity to be a great movie? Other than that, the movie was totally enjoyable.

I really wanted to see this movie because of the 3D; I hadnt seen many before(2 or 3). I heard mixed views before going, but ultimate loved the movie :-). The plot is simplistic, the acting terrible, and 3D made me motion sick. Cameron should not be permitted to direct his own scripts---he apparently can't edit his own work. The one redeeming feature was Sigourney Weaver's performance.

This movie was great, beautiful, loved it. I did find it a little much on the war end, but that's what is.
A warning to glasses-wearers - I found that the 3d made my eyes feel really strained, especially watching it on a Friday night after having looked at a computer all day at work - if you have sensitive eyes or poor eyesight, you might want to opt for the non-3d version. I took the 3d glasses off a few times, and it was just as beautiful:)

This movie delivers. The 3D is unlike anything that I have seen before. I was worried that the movie would be all special effects but the movie has a storyline and characters that make the picture worth seeing. It is an adventure movie on an alien world. For non-Sci Fi people do not dismiss this movie - you will simply have to let yourself be brought into the world of Avatar. The sights and sounds of the movie are captivating. For me great movies have to have great villians and people who rise up to meet challenges. You need people to root for and people to root against. This movie delivers. The movie draws from past movies I have seen.
From a political view it does show how the bad can generate a crisis and create their own legitimizing logic to justify their actions. They have it and we want it...this is how we get it. Someone has learned some truths about the political system.
From a movie goers viewpoint it was excellent entertainment, fun, spurred my imagination as to how things could be in an ideal society and gives us hope. The 3D effect was wonderful using both color and I believe polarized light(?) to help generate the 3D effect. It was amazing as to how far technology has come. I hope to see it again some day.

I'm stingy with the 5th star, and almost never use it, but for this, I'll make an exception. The 3-D version of Avatar is a great entertainment experience, a real movie-movie, and a visual knockout. Forget about the comparisons that some reviewers have made (Dances With Wolves" in outer space, etc.), or the complaints about a weak story line, which I did not find to be the case at all. It's a FANTASY. Just go and enjoy it.

My husband and I would not generally see a movie like this, but we absolutely loved it. We saw it in 3-D and would see it again. Very visual!

Hard to express how amazing this movie was. The 3D imaging was surreal, the colors and creativity are hard to put into words. But it did not overshadow a superb plot which left little to be desired.
For a 2.5 hour movie, it did not drag on at all, which denotes quality in my book. I would recommend this modern-day Abyss to anybody over the age of 13.

Unbelievable imagery , however the story is pretty predictable, the message is a little heavy handed , but the otherworldliness and the sympathy for the characters carries this movie.
