I thought the effects saved this movie. My wife was dying to see it, so I took her for Valentine's Day. A friend and fellow movie buff/home theater enthusiast recommended it highly. He is a sci-fi fan as is my wife, I am not. They both loved the movie while I thought it was just OK.. the plot was very predictable and was all over the place.. however, the 3-D effects were worth the price od admission. If they can reproduce that in Blu-Ray 1080p, I will be all over it for my home theater.

After all the hype about this movie, we couldn't wait to see it. It did have some interesting parts although the story was pale and simplistic and the acting was not the greatest. All of the buzz is about the special effects but I didn't appreciate them. I kept trying to compare to other Si-Fi films like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, lord of the rings and so on and no comparison... Even special effects did not compare to those. So I just don’t get it.

My husband really wanted to see this movie...so I went on Valentine's Day with him. I didn't like the movie. No real story plot and lots of violence. Military was treated like crap. While we are at war (and our son serves) didn't like the military getting destroyed for following orders.
No real story plot either...which was disappointing. Graphics were cool, but Cameron missed the mark on this one.

Outstanding visuals, engaging story-line, arial action scenes that were breathtaking. This is most likely the best science fiction movie ever as far as overall quality goes. Ground breaking on many levels it keeps you interested from the start. Not sure if the 3d added much to it as I haven't seen the non-3d yet but it was not full of 3d gimmicks. Ignore all of the hype and see it for yourself.

We went to this mainly for my 16 year old son and fully expected to have waisted our money. We were wrong! This movie was great! The whole family enjoyed it (except for hubby who couldn't get past the "un-abtainium!" Anyway, we'd see it again and so should you.
The only thing that I wasn't loving was the fact that they all looked naked and there was a lot more swearing than I would have expected for PG-13! Awkward!

This is a great movie with Animation that defies the boundaries of animation, a complex story line, good and uplifting values regardless of one's religion or spiritual bent. What I did not especially enjoy was the 3-D. The 3-D was a gimmick the film did not need. It was distracting. I look forward to seeing it in BluRay. Get your 3-D glasses before going into the theatre.

In order to really love it you have to drink the "U.S. military are bastards who deserve to die" kool-aid. I found it disturbingly hard to watch all those soldiers getting killed-- especially since we're in a time of war-- when they're engaging with the indigenous tribes. They were just following orders, and it's not like they'd been given the opportunity to sing Kumbaya with the natives first, like the avatar guy did. And the name of the rock they're trying to mine is Unobtainium, which just gives me the giggles. It's SO Marvel Comics. I totally expected Lex Luthor to be the mastermind.

This movie was wonderfully done. It really shows the deeper side of humanity and their view toward others... even in today's times. The graphics were awesome and I was engaged the entire time. I think the movie was a little "old" for children, so I wouldn't recommend movie theater rates for it. Overall, great movie!

I loved the story in movie itself, especially the connection between John Sully and Neytiri. The 3D part was a little tough to get used to. When they were running in the forest, it felt like I was too close. The best 3D parts were the simplest, such as the Tree of Souls.

Although I can't say that it was the best movie ever, it is cutting edge and completely worth seeing. Do not wait for it to come out on DVD. I don't imagine it will be as good.

If this movie were a conventional movie with say the level of effects that Starship Troopers had it would have been a B movie from the start.
The story is basically Dances with Wolves on a nother planet...only cheesier.
I also found that in between special effects sequesnces I was getting bored with the complete predictability of the story.
You'd think that they could afford a better writer (Cameron wrote it himself) with that budget.
It is definately worh seeing, but could have been a true classic with a better story and plotline.

Avatar is a very entertaining movie, special effects are great. It did not seem like it was 2hrs40mins long. Was exciting to the end.

very well made film. i like films with good effects but find some films rely on them to much to make the film. but this film the effects are so good right through the film that you don't notice them you view it has if there is'nt any. [if that makes sense] brilliant visuals brilliant story go see it you won't be disappointed.
