Yes, it's a moral, environmental, pacifist, new age spirituality film (there's one moment in there I declare they were about to break out into a round of "Kumbaya"), so those looking for an edgy drama will have missed the point; it's age-old beautiful do-good love story of the main character going native into a utopian universe we all still strive for, and about how pathetically far we have missed that mark, packaged inside a technologically visually groundbreaking stunner that marks a new era is filmmaking. If you do not see this movie in 3D you will have missed half the film! If you can find an IMAX theater to see this film in, all the better!

This movie is visually beyond stunning, especially in 3D. While I found the plot a tad bit predictable, it was still compelling. It's a long film, but you don't really notice because you're entirely drawn in. Definitely pay the extra to see it in 3D, it's worth it. Anyone who gives this movie a bad review needs to come down off their pedestal and talk to us "real" moviegoers. I loved it! Will definitely buy it when it comes to DVD and wish I had a BluRay :)

I am recommending AVATAR to all my friends. It depics what happened to all the people of color in the world when they came in touch with the European. The same story over and over again. In Africa, America, Asia, whereever the European went. I like the way they did it in animation. In this plot they have just about destroyed earth and are looking for other worlds and cultures to destroy. That is as it is.

Avatar 3D Downside: sloppy, lazy, ultra-derivative story-telling; 1-dimensional characters; not one original idea in nearly three hours of film.
Upside: the spectacle of Cameron's created stereoscopic world is sometimes entrancing and pretty enough to make you forget the rotten story. The stereoscopic effects are extremely well-done--the best I've seen, and I do this for a living.
Conclusion: Like "Titanic", this film's setting and technical approach are far more interesting than the story or characters.
2 stars, one of which is for technical excellence.

Awesome movie. I can't say that there was any time when I was wondering when it was going to be over but instead it was I wish it would last longer. Special effects were as good as Transformers if not better and story line was good and had a message.

OK, this is a movie in the Dances With Wolves tradition, so that's what you get. I expected far worse after reading the most negative reviews. Naysayers includes the superpatriots who object to the "split-tongued greedy & military men destroy nature and mistreat natives" storyline. Well? Guys ... guys .. R U saying that generally speaking The White Man has spoken the truth and bestowed major blessings on Natives? I didn't think so. So, the plot WAS adequate, the movie enjoyable, the acting just fine, and visually INCREDIBLE. The 3D in Imax anyway was great. In fact it's a 5, it's THAT stunning.

I saw this Movie in 3D. I do not believe that they used the 3D aspect to its full potential but it did enhance the experience. The CGI vistas were awsome. As an action flick, it was outstanding. Excellent editing. The movie flowed without any dry spells. I also enjoyed the actors (a big Sigourney Weaver fan). The plotline was somewhat predictable but it did not detract from the overall experience. It did not feel like a 2 hr and 40 minute movie.

This is the 2nd 3D movie that I've seen -- the first was Coraline. Watching this film was like a thrilling amusement park ride. I was blown away not only by the visuals but the story. Usually with big budget films like this the visual is great but the story/script is mediocre or vice versa. Avatar excelled on both. This film actually lives up to the hype. I thought it was a pretty cool movie. Besides for the one or two "extreme environmentalist" lines It managed to evade that preachy " save the world" tone. All of the script was very well thought out, and it left no loose ends to leave you feeling that a specific part of the movie was wasteful. The 3-D enhanced the overall experience. You can really tell Cameron took ten years or so out of his life to make this movie. Overall, the movie was really cool.

If you've seen Ferngully,Dances With Wolves or Pocahantas, then you've seen the plot of this film. But that's NOT why you go to this film.You go because the animation and 3D techniques are revolutionary. I have never seen any film that actually puts you into the film. This film does. The clarity of the CGI is beyond anything you will ever see.Not a hint of pixelation or green screen. The depth of the 3D is extrordinary, and the artistry in creating the planet Pandora is almost incomprehensible. Every movie story is derivative of something. Let's face, it's all been done before, so don't be swayed by the naysayers who decry the simplistic story and the predictable plot. Movies are to be experienced, like a roller coaster ride, which is more than a means of getting from one place to another. And this my friends is a real roller coaster ride of a movie. It is a wondrous fantasy that surrounds you and pulls you in. Fragile creatures floating down like dandelion seeds and sparks floating in the air from burning trees are just some of the subtle uses of the 3D system to make you feel like you are there. The CG characters seemed real. At least three plot situations made me tear up. The 3D was mostly subtle and non-intrusive. The picture detail and the vibrancy of the colors of Pandora were astonishing. The 3rd act is by far the weakest and contained moments where I was not quite so willing to suspend my sense of disbelief. Overall, I thought the high points outweighed the problematic plot elements and I thought the movie offered a lot more than the standard tripe Hollywood pumps out with regularity nowadays.

This was by far the best film Cameron has ever done. The story line was excellent, the direction was incredible, the special effects were visually stunning. Cameron has out done himself, and I definite would recommend this film.

We are infrequent movie goers lately, but the lure of new digital 3D technology drew me to take the family and visitors (7 adults) to see Avatar on its opening weekend. No one was disappointed, and I was enthralled in this production as I was the first time I saw "Star Wars" in 1976. I think the investors in this creation will more than recoup their investment, since word of mouth and social networking will pack the theaters for weeks. I am glad we went on the first weekend, before the lines get to long!
