"Alice in Wonderland": Minus: weak, wandering, by-the-numbers story; flat characters; lots of unnecessary filigree; grim, ugly setting. Plus: looks *amazing* even if it is ugly; J. Depp's performance as the Mad Hatter; S. Fry and A. Rickman voices on the Cat and Caterpillar. The "3D" effects are OK but are, as usual, an add-on; the movie is not designed to take advantage of it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Downside: sloppy, lazy, ultra-derivative story-telling; 1-dimensional characters; not one original idea in nearly three hours of film.
Upside: the spectacle of Cameron's created stereoscopic world is sometimes entrancing and pretty enough to make you forget the rotten story. The stereoscopic effects are extremely well-done--the best I've seen, and I do this for a living.
Conclusion: Like "Titanic", this film's setting and technical approach are far more interesting than the story or characters.
2 stars, one of which is for technical excellence.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
