Saw Avatar last night with my mom. We both liked it overall, but...it was too long by about 20 minutes or so. Visually spectacular and brought 3D to a new WOW level, doing so without cheesy effects.
However, the last portion of the film which simply became some sort of battle royale was way over the top, too much Terminator type of battle that destroyed avatar lives and the Pandora environment in its wake. Way over the top, and it brought down the movie overall.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Went with my spouse. She and I both agree it was one of the best special effects movies we have seen in quite some time. Definitely an Oscar winning movie. The 3D made it one of the most realistic ones I have ever seen. Much better than the old versions of the 50's and 60's. THe plot left a little to desire, still everything else makes it one you should definitely go, see and enjoy. Forget the movie critics. Movies are meant to give you enjoyment -- the critics too often look for too much detail and lose touch with what the movie is trying to do -- more often than not just entertain -- not send some moralistic messge.

This movie was amazing!! The graphics were incredible, but that is only part of the experience. The storyline was beautiful and made the movie all the better. It was a packed full of action, sci-fi, suspense, drama, and even a love story. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Not sure what all the hype is about. The story is as old as Romeo and Juliet or any other interspecies, interracial, inter-demographic love story.
The 3D was better than others but until the theaters are designed to truly accommodate 3D most of the effects are more of a distraction.
The other story lines of corporate greed, disrespect of other cultures and heritage is as old as the development of the rain forest.
Really a major disappointment on all fronts and despite the type this will not fundamentally change the way movies are made or thought of in our lifetimes.
Save your money.

If you've seen the previews you don't need to read a review.
Although the film was nearly 3 hours long, I felt that it went by without feeling dragged on. There will always be downsides to anything so I won't be the one to tell you what wasn't good. I'll simply tell you that the movie was phenomenal and will without a doubt recommend this. I'm looking forward to watching this for the second time. I heard that the 3D version isn't all that different from the standard version so I think I'll save the couple of dollars and watch the standard one next.

I've never bothered to put reviews on a movie before, this one actually moved me enough to want to review it. It is a must watch. I loved everything about it. Loved the effects, the detail to every little thing, the way it sucks you in and makes you fall in love with the characters and the storyline was very good too. Can't wait till it comes out on DVD! To be honest, other than knowing what an Avatar is, I had no idea the story line-just that all reviews were positive. This was the first movie in a while I did not notice the length of the movie or hope the cinematagraphy was better. I plan to see it at an IMax as soon as I can to get the full effect. It was fantastic. I had to see it in 3D and it lived up to all the reviews.

I saw the 3D version at a normal theater and this new 3D is SIMPLY AWESOME! There is still a small loss of focus at times in the real life scenes that use 3D cameras, but all of the animated 3D is perfect. The story line is superb as well. Sigorney Weaver is back after a very long stint of so-so to bad movies, and Sam Worthington is simply the whole movie. His performance in this movie is just as spectacurlar as his performance in Terminator.
Sensors were placed on every visible part of the actor's bodies and computers recorded every little movement as they acted. The aliens are around 11 feet tall, if I remember correctly, and there isn't a single shot in the entire movie that contradicts this, unlike previous movies.

This was a really, really good movie. While the story itself wasn't the strongest, I was completely engaged throughout the entire movie. I saw the 3D version so at times during the movie you became completely distracted by the visual imagery, which is beyond amazing. Not a big scifi fan, but this 2 1/2 movie only seemed to be an hour long -- that's how good it was.

I thought this movie was great. The only thing that would have improved it would have been to shorten it by a few scenes that were not integral to the movie. Almost 3 hours was just a bit too long. First time seeing the new 3D format and in my opinion would not recommend doing that. I think seeing it on the regular screen would be just as good. I am not one to purchase many movies but would like to own this one.

Other than some audio difficulties in our theater, the 3-D and computer generated elements are unrivaled. Sci-fi buffs will notice a page or two from the Alien/Aliens book as well as some similar sounding arrangements in the score. Overall an A+ for the production crew's ground breaking efforts in this amazing action film. Leave the plot nay-sayers aside, how many sci-fi films are realistic (A long time ago in a galalxy far, far away anyone?) I loved Avatar! The technology was amazing! I saw the film as a metaphor for our destruction of nature and indigenous peoples for economic gain. I loved that the film recognized our spiritual connection to nature and that nature is alive and that it is magical!! It echoes similar themes to what's found in The Ringing Cedar Series Books. YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE! Its the greatest film since and Star Wars and LOTR trilogy. I reccomend seeing it on the big screen in 3-d. I doubt your experience at home on DVD will compare at all. Many of the shows are being sold out, so go early to get good seats.

This is basically the same story as seen in many older movies(fern Gully).Evil White American developers taking over prestine forest for financial gain.So it gets marks down for the story.The acting was pretty good.Lot's of underlying properganda in the presentation.(blue people are holy,like Hindus),mother earth,people are really animals.There was a hint that the holy blue people kill animals for food,but they are very sorry for that.This movie gets high marks for special effects and not much more.Very entertaining,but an affront to Western Culture being maligned,as the viewer's intelligence.

Avatar is a movie for the ages, with the 3D animation it makes you feel as though you are on Pandora and in the environment. The story is perfectly told and you find yourself cheering for the Naa'vi because the humans are portrayed as the bad guys.

Overall it was a visionary treat. The graphics were impressive, imaginative and well detailed. The 3D experience didn't impress me as much as it did my friends but it could be a vision problem on my part. Story line was nice but extremely predictable joining 99% of the movies out there. It was obvious who wouldn't make it though to the end the moment they hit the screen. I liked the tree hugging theme but would have enjoyed more dimension to secondary characters, which could have helped in the predictability factor.

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie in 3D, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Visually, the movie was excellent. It was full of color and the 3D effects were absolutely worth it; that part fantastic. But the story? It has been told in movies a thousand times already. Definitely go see this for the 3D effects, but don't expect to be wowed by the story, too.

It was definitely less then I've expected. It's just a pretty fairy tale with great effects. The story is pretty cheesy but the colors and effects make up for it. I'd say it is above average but not near to be great.

To start off, it had a lot of similarities to Ferngully. But above all else, this movie was amazing. We saw it in 3D and it was like we were on those bird things, flying with the Na'vi. Definitely worth the hour wait in line.

The film was visually stunning and emotionally engaging. The main military figure was too stereo-typed.
The film fails as a take on our relationship to the environment since biology doesn't simply doesn't work as well as it does on Pandora. I liked the emphasis of the 'spiritual' as a pervasive element of Pandora's ecology. I think that points to more than natural selection as a mechanism for an ordered eco-system.
The movie functions best to show that love matters and that one should not simply TAKE what one wants. It has too many intellectual inconsistencies for one to draw anything more from it than that. So, the message is a good one unless one looks too deeply....
