"Dances with Wolves" meets "Matrix" so the storyline didn't work for me as "original" at all.
The visuals are spectacular and a must-see.
The Villian (corporations) was not interesting at all. The Army/General element lost its focus and his performance was poorly directed, he became "crazy," "over the top," "cartoonish."
The film caused me to dislike our US Forces.
If the story's villian had been more creative and the story less black and white, more about these amazing Indigenous people, it would have worked on a more mature level.

Effects were great, acting was decent, but the story, well, I guess it'll be a cold day in you-know-where before we get to enjoy a movie that doesn't have some liberal (or any kind) of message in it. If you get motion sick I wouldn't recommend this movie in 3D however I think it is worth trying to see it anyhow as it is going to be a once in a lifetime event! I have already seen it 3 times as I wanted to see all my friends and families reaction to it as well - Incredible movie!!!

This is a good solid storyline. Though nothing new in it , but it is a new way of showing man's determination to destroy our forest and jungles at any cost. The color and imagery is excellent with or without the 3D. There was a good balance of comedy, but it did not take away from the beauty and seriousness of the situation. You get the gist of the plot from the first 10 minutes, and you pretty much know where and how it's going to end. But so what? Avatar is an amazing ride through an amazing world. They've gotten pas the wooden CGI characters with their wooden hand gestures and fingers that never seem to interact with whatever they're holding. All those fakey, robotic "tells" have been smoothed over (or are we just getting used to seeing this stuff???) and you become immersed in an alien environment. It's beautiful, exhilarating and awesome.

You really get lost in the story and beautiful Pandora landscape, which makes the time fly by. The only thing I would have added was some sort of chest covering on the lead female character. Not much was left to the imagination in the indegenous population wardrobe department.

Although the political undertones were a bit annoying I really enjoyed the visual effects, especially in 3D. I just wish Hollywood would stop using the big screen to cram their political views down our throats! One of the best fantasy/scifiction movies ever. Visually stunning, the 3D was excellent as well as the prtrayal of a complex ecosystem. With Sigourney Weaver as the chief anthropologist, I kept flashing back to Alien. The cast was excellent as well as the story telling.

I'd like to start this off by saying that i now have a new favorite movie of all time. Avatar was visually captivating and had a wonderful storyline. I had to watch it in 3D, i'm taking the chance to see it probably 2 more times in theatre and will definitely buy this on blu ray. Avatar 3D exceeded my expectations on every level. The film is visually breathtaking. The beauty present in the Pandora nature scenes is amazing. The 3D worked really well. After about 5 minutes, I forgot I was wearing the glasses. The message delivered in the movie is a little heavy handed and the character motivations are somewhat simplistic but overall the story really works. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen!

The story is both Dances With Wolves and The Last Samurai with a sci fi twist and it succeeds. I love the basic story and a good retelling of it is always welcome. This time it's set in a fantastic world that looks a whole lot like a Yes album. The backdrop is breathtaking, and my favorite part is the bioluminescent forests. My only gripe with the film is the artificial emotional cues that seem to discredit the intelligence of the viewer. The length of the flick, while perhaps long for some, was not an issue for me. In fact, I could have sat for another 20 or 30 minutes of movie and still would have been ready for more.

If you are a fan of science fiction and even if you're not, you'll will love this movie. The special effects are so real, that the alien race of people are so believable. Even though the movie is almost 3 hrs long, you lose track of time while watching. At the end you wish the movie would continue, because you become so involved in the story. This movie was not one I typically would have seen at the theater based on previews, but friends kept raving how good the movie was. I decided to go and was not disappointed. Many have commented how long the movie was, but I hardly noticed the time pass until we were out of the theater. For having the main character be from the Marines, there wasn't so much of the stereotype in acting, very great!

Avatar is a masterpiece and a cinematic experience unlike any other. I encourage everyone to partake in the splendor of this film. Not only is the film visually stunning, but also emotional, spiritual, and entirely engrossing. Thanks be to God for James Cameron for he has done it again!

All you have heard about the effects is true, and then some. The plot is familiar to all regular movie goers, call it "Dances With Wolves meets The Matrix with a little He-Man (riding the land and air creatures) thrown in". Cameron has been pushing the technological envelope since The Abyss, and does not disappoint in that regard. But the movie lags in the middle and is about a half hour too long. The characters are extremely stereotyped, no one is wearing a gray hat in this one. You are all bad or good beyond description. All in all, a fun trip, but the only Oscars in store for this movie should be special effects.
