You get the gist of the plot from the first 10 minutes, and you pretty much know where and how it's going to end. But so what? Avatar is an amazing ride through an amazing world. They've gotten pas the wooden CGI characters with their wooden hand gestures and fingers that never seem to interact with whatever they're holding. All those fakey, robotic "tells" have been smoothed over (or are we just getting used to seeing this stuff???) and you become immersed in an alien environment. It's beautiful, exhilarating and awesome.
What a ride! Great ensemble cast. Fantastic action and effects Works for people new to Star Trek as well as long-time fans. Zoë Saldaña as a young Lt. Uhura is a knockout on every level!
Not unfilmable. Just challenging. Watchmen the graphic novel is a hard act to follow. But I think this is a powerful take on the material. Perfect? No...but what is? Worth watching? Entertaining? Difficult? Fascinating? Hell, yes. Read Roger Ebert's blog for an in-depth look at his second viewing, where it all came together. Sometimes you don't get a film completely the first time through. That doesn't make it a bad film. Just a deeper experience.
