The visuals in the movie are stunning, but that's not surprising since it's a product of designer Tom Ford. The story, however, was much more powerful than I anticipated. Colin Firth turns in an understated yet moving performance. It made me glad that I don't live in a world where I'd have to mourn the loss of a partner in secret because the world refused to see me as a full member of society. Two thumbs up!

A Single Man is a tremendously impressive debut film by Tom Ford, otherwise known as a fashion designer. He will be known as much as a filmmaker in the future if he so chooses. This is a wonderful, beautiful, sensitively made film with a performance by Colin Firth that really allows his talent to shine - not his usual role, by any means. I hope he wins an Oscar. All of the supporting cast add to the film's success, as well.

If you like watching endless loops of old Chanel commercials then this movie is perfect. Stylish, polished, posey and very self conscious but since Tom Ford is a fashionisto it informs his film making.
Moore is brilliant and her Hollywood Regency house is pretty enviable. Too bad the movie wasn't about her and her character.
Firth is wooden - maybe thats the point - or maybe this script was so bad that it had to be a 90 minute Chanel commercial to make it even midly interesting. He is reminiscent of the self-pitying men in BITB.
Still - when the weather is 20F its worth watching.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Very artistic movie, great acting. A bit depressing overall as it deals with a man who lost his partner.
Seems like the majority of movies being made about g_y people are tragedies. A Single Man, Brokeback Mountain, Milk all have the feature character lose their partner and/or die.
Would love to see a movie that showed an honest representation of how happy, well adjusted g_y people live without the tragedy. Would definately make a more enjoyable movie.
Note to movietickets.com - your website registers the word "g_y" as profanity and won't allow posting. Do something about that please.

Tom Ford's directorial debut is a rare achievement -- he's created a gorgeous, beautifully acted film that depicts a man's coming to terms with grief for his dead lover and finding a reason to live again. Colin Firth is remarkable, subtle, passionate, and whereas Julianne Moore -- who is equally skilled and beautiful -- is really a supporting role, not lead actress, as advertised, the other supporting actors are also wonderful. The pacing may seem slow to the current audience numbed into unconsciousness by CGI, but for adults who love a story well told and acted, this film is like water in a desert.

A self-indulgent, pretentious, boring film, that makes Last Year at Marienbad, my previous candidate for most boring film ever, seem action-packed. Convincing proof that fashion designers should not be filmmakers. Nothing against Colin Firth and Juliann Moore, who are good actors, but a moronic script and leaden direction and the relentless posing made this film virtually unwatchable.

I am quite amazed that Tom Ford has, in addition to incredible design and leadership talents, the ability to direct a great film.
I loved this movie. I don't normally like period pieces, but this was executed perfectly. What is most interesting for me is the almost subversive portrayal of men loving men before Stonewall (I am using this awkward phrasing because the lame and movietickets auto-spam filters are classifying the word I would normally use -- rhymes with May -- as "profanity")) -- it corrects the belief that most of us have that modernity only began with us. The movie is a rich picture of how we lived, loved and grieved long before most of us emerged on the scene as adults. Unique and not to be missed.

Colin Firth gives one of the best performances of the year as a broken-hearted professor who has lost his lover of 16 years in the early 1960's. Excellent performances by Julianne Moore (who looks ravishing), Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult. While Tom Ford has done a masterful job in his first directorial bid, the movie is almost too art-directed and nuanced. Very minor criticisms, however. Worth seeing.

It would be a shame if adult movie-goers avoid "A Single Man" because they believe it is a movie about a g*y man. Director Ford does a great job of constructing a layered, textured film about love, loss, loneliness, depression, healing and the ironies of life. Colin Firth & Julianne Moore expand their range - giving us something more than we have grown accustomed to - beyond the considerable acting prowess they both consistently have provided in their films of recent years. This movie will hold your rapt attention and keep you empathically transfixed from start to finish. Both Firth & Moore should be confident of Oscar nominations! See it on the big screen.

A man becomes unmoored when his much-idealized love dies senselessly and young. Using effective flashbacks to gradually reveal the relationship, Tom Ford paints a lovingly composed vision of beautiful suffering and the dangers of self-indulgence.
While Colin Firth's subtle internal modulations convey far more complexity than the elliptical and detail-stingy script, in the end the whole equals more than the sum of its parts. We see a life unfold and degrade before our eyes in painterly detail.

This film is beautiful, gripping from beginning to end, entertaining, and disturbing. One theme is heartbreak, loss, loneliness, and despair. The setting in the early 60s sharply draws the other theme of love and the realization that the issues of the public's disbelief in the "realness" of his feelings have not changed. Colin Firth's performance is superb. He shows depths of despair and loneliness with touches of humor and a general humanity. He faces the day and the people he meets with an outward normalcy and inner turmoil, well suited to his restrained style. The other actors, in particular Moore and Hoult, do a great job but it is Firth who makes this movie a must-see.

Aesthetically the movie is very pleasing to watch. Beautifully shot with several cinematographic styles blended together. While the story had great potential there is a lot of wasted footage and unnecessary dialogue I found pointless and just self indulgent. In the last 15 minutes the movie redeems itself ... but not without my having left the theater feeling cheated. Why couldn't the entire movie have been as good from start to finish? As a first film for Mr. Ford this is an ASTOUNDING accomplishment. I would wait for the DVD and watch it at home.

Thanks to incredible writing and some of the best performances I've seen in years (Colin Firth is deeply moving in the title role), this film elevates over what could have been a cold art piece to something far more intimate, personal and extraordinarily beautiful. The way color is manipulated, from high contrast/saturation to washed out tones, depending on the mood and memory of the piece, is particularly effective. This is a film that I'll be re-viewing many times. Bravo.

I'm afraid a lot of people will avoid this film because the central character is a ga'y man, and that would be a shame, because it's a film about loss and grieving - and how deeply felt the absence of one's life partner can be. The film takes liberties with the book, but only in the interest of translating narrative action (George's internal state) into film action. The actors are all excellent, with Colin Firth giving the performance of his career. The use of color is a character in itself.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Being a ga'y man in 1962, "light in his loafers," according to a neighbor, George (Firth) is not allowed to go to his 16-year partner Jim's (Goode) funeral and has trouble coping with his loss. The book A Single Man in its day was groundbreaking. This film is less so, but the use of color intensity to gauge George's "pulse" is unique. You can drown in his student Kenny's (Hoult) blue eyes. Moore as Charley, his confidante, is Oscar material.

Tom Ford's debut film is, well, like a long fragrance commercial. It's beautifully shot with lots of emotion, but overall it is indulgent and a bit thin on story. The settings are gorgeously full of good fashion, architecture, and outdoor shots, yet the movie is painfully long and slow, despite it's average running time. Nicholas Hoult has certainly grown up into a handsome young man (compared to About A Boy), and the nudity between him and Colin Firth doesn't hurt! The ending is at least a nice payoff for the slowness.
