With this role Tilda Swinton jumps into the MovieRhino's Top Five world class movie actresses - joining the likes of Blanchette, Streep, Mirren and Winslet. Amazing piece of work! The overall film itself is no less stupendous. It is rich, textured, original, believable, beautiful to look at, perfectly edited and scripted, gorgeously filmed and expertly acted by all of the artists involved. I honestly felt at the end of the movie that it should have cost more for a ticket as we actually got about 5 movies in 1 and all 5 were great! We got the aristocratic tale of inheritance and treachery. We got an erotic tale of forbidden love. We got a "Tom Jones-like" allegory between cuisine and sensuality. We got the sudden twist at the end that changes everything .... and we have a film that is one of the most perfect visually that I have ever seen. Bravo to all involved!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My friend and I both enjoyed this movie as did others we to spoke to after the show. One woman said, "I loved this movie. It's the kind of film that I'll think about for days." It is like nothing I've ever seen before. The pace is languorous, like a hot summer day in Italy, yet compelling. It was meticulously filmed with a passion for details. The viewer is given an accurate and humane portrayal of the emotional life of a wealthy family. Don't expect every little plot point to be wrapped up for you into a neat little package. The acting by every single actor in the film was flawless. The cinematography and music are both artful and unusual. Bellissima.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Reading the many reviews, I was expecting a luscious, sensuous film. I certainly didn't feel any of this. I found Tilda to be as icy cold when she's in love as before, and I didn't see the point of the whole movie. Too many useless close-up, the music is really too overwhelming at the end (we understand this is a dramatic moment, thank you!) and I left the movie theater quite disappointed. However, I enjoyed seeing the Mediterranean beautiful landscape, But for me this movie is much fuss over very little. It certainly didn't have the subtelty I generally enjoy in European films.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

There are many intriguing threads in this movie -- Tilda Swinton's fine performance, lush sets, formal family dinners with the cadence and etiquette of a fine minuet, an odd two-generation bequest of the family fortune, and more. Unfortunately, the threads are never woven into anything larger or better -- the film is filled with gratuitous plot details, undeveloped characters and cliched schmaltzy love scenes (interspersed with tight shots of insects exploring flowers -- how novel). Too bad. There is much promise here but ultimately little is delivered.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

With all the beautiful clothing, Milanese home furnishings, Ligurian scenery, meticulously presented prawns and Russian fish broth, the profound tragedy of this woman and her sensitive children is almost buried underneath a heavy coverlet of cinematic detail and a score that is well done but, in the most euphomistic way of saying it, has the subtlety of a Mack Truck.
Tilda Swinton is convincing as a somewhat lost and gentle creature in the land of "gente fatta per bene" seeking money and a global name for Recchi textiles, but less so as someone whose first language was Russian. She cannot deny her linguistically Anglo roots. Peccato.
The most compelling (and frustratingly minimalized) performances came from La Recchi's Lesbian daughter, Elisabetta, and Eva, fiancee to son, Edo.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

the love of the profound lusciousness of food --of the body, of flowers, the smell of things, the innnate desire for these part of life in us How we choose to deprive ourselves of these through rationalilty and illusions of security and corporate mentalites of "more " .
a sensual and tragic reminder of what we may lose when predictability has taken over

An incredibly visionary, bold and extremely human film, I AM LOVE follows the journey of the Russian Emma (Tilda Swinton) through her marriage in an upper-class Italian family. Beautifully written, shot and acted, this film leaves you caring about the characters by the end of the movie and empathizing strongly with their desires and wishes. An incredible journey, emotionally touching and visually breathtaking.

I encourage anyone with a sophisticated eye and appreciation for great filmmaking to see I Am Love.
It's an amazingly subtle, beautiful, and moving film that excels in all categories - cinematography, direction, acting, screenplay, design, storytelling.
Tilda Swinton inhabits her character - in an instant, we understand who she's playing on many levels. Her technical abilities aside (very impressive facility with Italian, and the physicality of an Upper Class woman in contemporary Milan), she has done her homework, creating a "back story" for the character that helps realize a real, richly drawn, 3-dimensional person.
The relationships between major character are as varied and complicated as in any great film of the past 10 years. The ending will leave you stunned and in awe of the cast and director.
Run, don't walk to the nearest theater and see this masterpeice!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

An ordinary story dressed up in expensive Italian threads...this movie breaks no fresh ground.Self conscious camera work reminiscent of the old shaky days of cinema-verite attempts to make this more arty than it deserves to be.The highlight of the movie were the shots of Milan and San Remo, but you can get those with Steve Reeves.Probably appealing to middle aged women feeling stressed by the ordinariness of their marriages, but tedious for most others

In the other direction!!!
This could be one of the worst highly rated movies one can imagine seeing. I heard there was some sexy scenes. Of all the women who had to get naked in this film, why did it have to be Tilda? I would have preferred the Rori character who played her mother-in-law.
My 19 year old son was with us and he is a big fan of all type of film and he was as miserable as Elaine Benes watching the "English Patient".
I will admit there was some beautiful scenery but hey it's Italy, not hard to do.
The camera man must have been drunk as I was almost carsick watching the unneccessary constant camera movement.
So save your hard earned dough and skip this movie. You can thank me later. Unless of course you are the one guy who has waited for Tilda Swinton to expose her breasts with a close up so close you can count the hairs shooting out of her nipple.
Not kidding.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Lush, sensual, satisfying. Best movie I've seen this year. Swinton is stunning. Only quibble: Wasn't crazy about the self-conscious whip-edits in some scenes. Otherwise, yum.

Although the photography and art direction were quite good, and Swinton did a good job, I didn't really care about the characters and thought the story was very weak. There were a number of different elements to the story but the story did not really focus on any of them. I didn't think that the attempt at steamy passion worked at all.
Cannot even conceive of recommending this movie. Almost excruciatingly slow.

This is Swinton's movie. And Guadagnino's. Very stylized. Almost more like a series of photographs rather than a movie. Lots of high contrast and playing with colors. John Adam's music is on the one hand very unusual and on the other sledgehammer obvious. The story does heat up after quite a while providing pathos and drama however it's Swinton's performance around which the whole movie revolves. I'd see it again.

Swinton plays a Russian woman who fell in love with a rich Italian once upon a time. Her current life is anything but a fairy tale. In fact, it's full of the dullness of family life and the responsibilities of a hugely successful Italian family business. Enter a young, creative Italian chef to sweep her off her feet and she suddenly springs back into life. Unfortunately, the usual dangers of an extramarital affair develop and tragedy ensues. She plays her character with passion and conviction and the ending is inspiring.

Tilda Swinton's performance is the reason anyone goes to see this movie. There are some remarkably beautiful scenes especially those of her character's love affair but about 2/3 in, the movie devolves into some kind of melodramatic Italian soap opera. The cinematography of Milan and the Italian countryside is another plus. The audience en masse audibly expressed their dissatisfaction with the rather confusing ending.
