There are many intriguing threads in this movie -- Tilda Swinton's fine performance, lush sets, formal family dinners with the cadence and etiquette of a fine minuet, an odd two-generation bequest of the family fortune, and more. Unfortunately, the threads are never woven into anything larger or better -- the film is filled with gratuitous plot details, undeveloped characters and cliched schmaltzy love scenes (interspersed with tight shots of insects exploring flowers -- how novel). Too bad. There is much promise here but ultimately little is delivered.
